PLEASE NO SCHOOLING ON VEGANISM BEFORE I BEGIN.
I'm so fcked off.
I've noticed that the supermarket thighs now include an added bonus. Some fucking spine/rib/ god knows what bone that never existed before.

It disintegrates in curries, its tiny little bits end up everywhere. It's meant I can't even give chicken curry to my DD now as there's a million bones.

I have to pick out every tiny bit while I eat and its so fucking endless and annoying

And to top it all off. The pack weights are the same yet having to now crop this shit out before cooking amounts to about 25% of the weight I bought.

The Asda ones had this. And now Lidl too. I've just wanted to make some grilled chicken thighs and salad and I've had to chop this shit to peices. And now the thighs are the size of jaffa cakes.

I dont know what my aibu is but here's a pic of this shit.

Just buy boneless or breast?

Valhalla17 · 31/10/2022 18:51

Isn't that the back of the chicken? It's not part of the thighs at all!

ChocChipOwl · 31/10/2022 18:53

That looks absolutely disgusting

Threadkillacilla · 31/10/2022 18:54

Even the fillets are contaminated with bone pieces now I thought I'd just been unlucky a couple of times. And the strip of fat and skin they leave on is much bigger.

ExtraJalapenos · 31/10/2022 18:54

Boneless ends up being too expensive. Thighs normally are lovely with the bone in, traditionally that's how we make chicken curry, have done so since I can remember.
Breast is too dry for me. I'll use it now and again for fajitas but for indian/west Indian curries I need the thighs with bones. Dd loves it too.
I'm just pissed that they've changed something that was totally fine. Wtf even is this bone?

OP posts:
Applesandcarrots · 31/10/2022 18:56

Is it the spine part which would standardly be removed?

Agree with pp about breast having fragments. And I don't believe it's just your bad luck @Threadkillacilla because I bought them once in ASDA only and had that. What would the odds be

PBSam · 31/10/2022 18:56

That's a spine. Absolutely shocking a Chopped up chicken carcass contains bits of carcass.

Applesandcarrots · 31/10/2022 18:57

I bet you it's a change to make up weight in packs

ExtraJalapenos · 31/10/2022 19:00

@PBSam
Thanks for your incredibly helpful input. Trying to vent here and you're making me see the bigger picture and i don't want to see it yet!

@Applesandcarrots yep it's gotta be to make up for weight.

My bacon shrank to less than 50% it's size all of a sudden too. Everything has more water added for weight.

And more bone now too.

miceonabranch · 31/10/2022 19:01

Wow, that's really bad, and I'll generally eat anything. Shops must be trying all kinds of tricks to cut costs.

ExtraJalapenos · 31/10/2022 19:01

Also. I did think it was spine. But im just so mad.

OP posts:
miceonabranch · 31/10/2022 19:02

Who eats chicken spine? That belongs in pet food.

Applesandcarrots · 31/10/2022 19:03

Controversial but I am mostly faithful to my halal butcher. No shrinkage, well but hered meat...
The few times I bought chicken or lamb in supermarkets were disappointing.
Though that doesn't help with bacon 🙈

bellac11 · 31/10/2022 19:04

I always buy boneless as I prefer thighs

But the time I mistakenly put thighs on the bone in the slow cooker, the bloody bones all disintegrated like you said, all within the curry sauce. Had to throw it away, turns my stomach when theres bits in things

Everything is poor quality and low standards now, whether its food stuffs or customer service, banks never open now, utility companies you cant get through, insurance companies not picking up, cant get through to the dentist or doctor

Third world country we're turning into

FictionalCharacter · 31/10/2022 19:06

That sure doesn't look like chicken thighs. Surely the shops are obliged to give you the product as described? I'd be asking Trading Standards about it. If it's labelled chicken thighs it should contain exactly that, not 75% chicken thigh and 25% assorted other body parts.

gogohmm · 31/10/2022 19:06

I had bone in thighs yesterday from Lidl, same as usual. Perhaps it was a dodgy batch?

Applesandcarrots · 31/10/2022 19:07

Third world country we're turning into

Dh is from one and they have better meat🙈

Tigofigo · 31/10/2022 19:07

You get what you pay for...

If you want cheap meat during expensive times, it's going to be cheap cuts. Quelle surprise.

We buy organic meat which is horrifyingly expensive now but quality is so much better. Two chicken breasts feed 3-4. We only buy it once a week and rest of diet is cheap plant based so our weekly shop for 4 is still affordable.

picklemewalnuts · 31/10/2022 19:09

That's a chicken leg quarter, not a chicken thigh.
When we've lived in Asia, chickens are hacked to pieces with those cleaver type knives, all sorts of random bone shards in it.

Chicken thighs should be just the thigh, obviously!

FeliciteFaff · 31/10/2022 19:11

Of course I’ll get blasted but Myself and my friends started buying halal or kosher chicken it’s been cleaner, tastes better (they drain the blood). We also get better portions. We are in West London.

ProfYaffle · 31/10/2022 19:12

God that's weird. Like it's been stamped on rather than butchered properly. I think I did read about a shortage of skilled butchers, maybe they're trying to automate the process more and it's just .... shit.

FeliciteFaff · 31/10/2022 19:13

We get it from
sainsburys and tescos

you def have spine in there. That’s not thigh meat/bone on any level.

BMW6 · 31/10/2022 19:14

I also recommend Halal shops for chicken. Much better quality.

ExtraJalapenos · 31/10/2022 19:16

Nope not dodgy batch. Sent DP to asda, he can see the same shit in the packets.
This is the second time from lidl in 2 months.
I dont know whether its down to where we are (Midlands)
