To just want some normal Fckin chicken? - WARNING meat pic included

PLEASE NO SCHOOLING ON VEGANISM BEFORE I BEGIN.
I'm so fcked off.
I've noticed that the supermarket thighs now include an added bonus. Some fucking spine/rib/ god knows what bone that never existed before.

It disintegrates in curries, its tiny little bits end up everywhere. It's meant I can't even give chicken curry to my DD now as there's a million bones.

I have to pick out every tiny bit while I eat and its so fucking endless and annoying

And to top it all off. The pack weights are the same yet having to now crop this shit out before cooking amounts to about 25% of the weight I bought.

The Asda ones had this. And now Lidl too. I've just wanted to make some grilled chicken thighs and salad and I've had to chop this shit to peices. And now the thighs are the size of jaffa cakes.

I dont know what my aibu is but here's a pic of this shit.

Rank! I'd take it back as it isn't what you paid for! I'm finding even with chicken breast I'm having to hack off loads of minging bits lately and I'm left with little shreds if chicken. Might try out halal or kosher as pps have suggested.

ExtraJalapenos · 31/10/2022 19:18

Here's an untouched one.

I'll stop taking pics now lol

Boneless ends up being too expensive. Thighs normally are lovely with the bone in, traditionally that's how we make chicken curry, have done so since I can remember.
Breast is too dry for me. I'll use it now and again for fajitas but for indian/west Indian curries I need the thighs with bones. Dd loves it too.
I'm just pissed that they've changed something that was totally fine. Wtf even is this bone?

That does look like higher prices through the back door. When I lived in the Netherlands this was a regular cut, but sold as whole legs, not something changed surreptitiously. Also, very untidy butchering.

I wonder, have you priced out buying whole chicken and fileting it at home, then using the carcasses for chicken stock? Some places I've lived that actually turned out to be the best option. But would totally depend on the price structure in the stores you're using.

ExtraJalapenos · 31/10/2022 19:20

Thinking about it I'm wondering whether it's the wording.
It says thigh 'portions' rather than just thighs.
If its like this everywhere I think ill follow suit and go to a butchers instead. I'd rather cut back on something else and get more out of my chicken

It probably just makes the manufacturing process cheaper so they can pass the cost in to you. Just cut it out.

Personally, I wouldn’t eat battery hens anyway.

ExtraJalapenos · 31/10/2022 19:23

@GrumpyPanda the weird thing is, I've never experienced this even when I've bought whole leg portions. We tend to use whole leg for barbecues and it's never had this.

To my knowledge the spine is not present in any portion of chicken unless its literally a whole chicken.

Just read the thread the other day about cheese being shit everywhere too. Its like nothing is edible any more 🤣

It's because you're buying chicken thigh portions as opposed to chicken thighs. It specifically mentions that it includes the backbone on Asda's site. groceries.asda.com/product/chicken-thighs-drumsticks/just-essentials-by-asda-backbone-in-chicken-thigh-portions-contains-bones/1000296140211

That said I bought two packs the other week from Asda for the dogs and I didn't get any nasty bits but perhaps I just got lucky.

Hoardasurass · 31/10/2022 19:26

@Applesandcarrots you want dry cured bacon it cost more but there's no added water or shrinkage so you use less

DearOohDear · 31/10/2022 19:27

I agree it's about the weight, I'd go to a butchers from now on that would put me off

We do Macon here. 😁 It's like streaky bacon.

Not being goady but interested to know if this is at all related to Bre*it? Like would the EU have prohibited this kind of ambiguous “portion” labelling?

Applesandcarrots · 31/10/2022 19:29

I always thought chocken thigh portion is the thigh bit without the other leg bit, if that makes sense

I've bought them before Brexit.

Decafflatteplease · 31/10/2022 19:29

I've found this recently with chicken breasts from Asda they all have bits of bone in. We cut down using our local butcher to try to save money but I think I'm going to go back as it's not working out much cheaper using supermarkets. Our butcher does 3 packs of meat for £11 and it's good quality so comparable to the supermarket

WinterDeWinter · 31/10/2022 19:29

I hate Brexit Britain. It really is utter shit.

Applesandcarrots · 31/10/2022 19:31

Drumstic. That's the word I was looking for

Tinner01 · 31/10/2022 19:42

@bellac11 im from a “third world country” and the meat is better than that!

Northernsoullover · 31/10/2022 19:49

I've been buying m and s chicken breast fillets. You get between 5-6 and it is 12.00. I am not flush. Obviously not super skint but its still a lot for me. We just have to get used to eating less. So 3 adults and we have 2 fillets between us. The quality is far superior to any of the other supermarkets.

tobee · 31/10/2022 19:49

Isn't there supposed to be a butcher shortage? I've noticed chicken thighs looking like they've been thrown about the place and boxed recently when they used to be attractively arranged! Same product listing, same supermarket.

Georgyporky · 31/10/2022 20:00

Try a different supermarket

andmostofallyouletyourselfdown · 31/10/2022 20:31

The boned chicken thighs I buy, which are good value, are not like this.

Oh wow that explains it!

Backbone-in thighs! Gross.

Also, a kilo of chicken for £2.60? 😩

LozzaChops101 · 31/10/2022 20:40

I’m a veggie but have to chop up endless feckin chicken breasts at work, and I keep finding bone shards! Grim.

DelilahBucket · 31/10/2022 20:44

We only buy from a local butcher. His prices work out cheaper than the supermarket once you've accounted for water shrinkage and other things they do to add weight. He asks if I want the back bone leaving in when I get thighs. Sometimes I do as it is packed with flavour. Certainly no disintegration going on when I cook them or bits of bone everywhere as people seem to be experiencing. That is more likely down to the quality of the chicken and their diet. You get what you pay for and unfortunately supermarkets will do anything to keep costs down.
