to think Rees Mogg doesn't use the normal date in his letters but just picks whatever day it is such as Christmas Day, Trafalgar Day or St. Crispin's day?

This is his resignation letter. Most politicians seem to use a letter done in Word. Or similar. His is handwritten. Very hard to read.

And the date. Do you think he just looks in his diary, sees it's St.Crispin's Day and writes that as the date?

Exactly. The Catholicism schtick is as fake as the rest of the persona.

The whole persona is ridiculous - his father was an insufferable middle class made good snob who lobbied like mad for a peerage. His maternal grandfather was a lorry driver who became a car sales man according to one profile in the broadsheets years ago. Arivistes at best!

Sufficiently educated to apply charm to workplace relationships with those young enough not to know the difference. "Nice" is not a word I'd use to describe those who push for policies which actively hurt the economy, protect dodgy landlords and cut services and benefits, whilst shifting his own money offshore and profiteering. Delboy via Eton possibly.

Charm? Smarm.

cakeorwine · 26/10/2022 08:23

So what's today's Saint then?

So what's today's Saint then?

Multiple - Saint Alfred the Great might be appropriate 😂

I'd love to claim I know this but there are "saints of the day" sites out there and I found a collection:

His wife Helena Fitzwilliam-Wentworth de Chair, on the other hand ,.......is from a proper aristocratic family - daughter of Lady 'Maud' Fitzwilliam-Wentworth and great-grand daughter of 8th Earl Fitzwilliam of Wentworth Woodhouse fame

'Black Diamonds' the rise and fall of an English Dynasty'' fame' is fascinating history of her family

I expect that he uses a catholic calendar that has a recognised feast day for each day of the year. It used to be done this way more commonly, not so much these days. I imagine excel would return a #value error if you tried to enter the date as “St Crispin’s Day”

this!! 😂🤣😂

Affectation. Pretentious twat. Delighted he’s out.

I sort of hope Sunak sent a note accepting the resignation dated in terms of Diwali. Although as he's a grownup who doesn't need a nanny he probably wouldn't.
Of course, dating a letter by a date relevant to a specific religion is crass in 21st century Britain, but I'm sure Sunak (former head boy of Winchester, Oxford PPE, MBA Stanford as a Fulbright scholar) is entirely familiar with the cultural connotations of St Crispin's day.

JRM is a fake Catholic?! Now I've heard everything

orbitalcrisis · 26/10/2022 12:08

It's all part of the character he is playing. Like Alex Johnson, AKA Boris.

And even Johnson is not Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson's historic family name. Johnson's great grandfather (for those of you who didn't see him on Who Do You Think You Are?) was the Turkish secular muslim politician Ali Kemal who was assassinated in 1922. The family fled to England and adopted the maternal grandmother's maiden name to avoid being linked to being Turkish.

Well, he is RC, but only from a couple of generations back, whereas he is cos-playing being an Anglo-Catholic aristo, like the Duke of Norfolk.

@MissLucyEyelesbarrow ".....he is cos-playing being an Anglo Catholic aristo, like the Duke of Norfolk."

Such affectation 🙄
Weren't his grandmother's people from Ireland, from where they fled poverty.

It is St Cuthbert of Canterbury's special day too today.

JRM is an attention seeking twit. No more no less.
But should be kept well away from any form of public life.
