to think Rees Mogg doesn't use the normal date in his letters but just picks whatever day it is such as Christmas Day, Trafalgar Day or St. Crispin's day?

metro.co.uk/2022/10/25/jacob-rees-moggs-hand-written-resignation-letter-is-slathered-with-pretention-17633956/

This is his resignation letter. Most politicians seem to use a letter done in Word. Or similar. His is handwritten. Very hard to read.

And the date. Do you think he just looks in his diary, sees it's St.Crispin's Day and writes that as the date?

It's an attention-seeking affectation, just like everything else he does.

Yep. Just like Boris Johnson’s hair-ruffling and quoting Latin and Greek literature.

Listening to JRM come on a radio 4 interview the other day... it struck me that he does manners very well but he is sneery AF WRT ideas, and does not respect any expertise that doesn't agree with his existing prejudices. There are ways to respectfully disagree with ideas, Anne Widdecombe was good at that (she basically has all the same opinions as JRM on many things but she expresses her beliefs in a way that doesn't come across as sneery & condescending).

JRM likes being snobby. He made a decision as a child to admire & aspire to the type of snobbiness he exudes. His family presumably encouraged this eccentricity. I would love to know what Helena de Chair is like, because she comes across as down to Earth. I imagine she sees him for the goofy idealist he is deep down.

I rate Jess Phillips. She managed to befriend JRM & bring out the human in him, but I feel like that's more to her credit than his.

He is only too well aware that what other people think of him is completely irrelevant

Indeed, and the whole point of his affections is to rub in this fact, whilst also attracting the approbation of the surprisingly large segment of the population who enjoy looking up to people who despise them.

The irony is that truly posh people don't do this. They like to stay under the radar, so as not to provoke the peasants into dusting off the guillotine.

It's that deferential culture that remains a part of British society.

Bimblybomeyelash · 25/10/2022 21:59

I know a couple of people who would do this. Charming, harmless oddballs. But from JRM it’s eye rollingly annoying. He’s a pretentious, superior twat, who has no redeeming features.

Pallisers · 25/10/2022 22:01

Yes attention-seeking affectation. Hard to imagine there is any actual personality there beneath the layers of appropriated persona.

great article though.

I know lots of Catholics who are similarly formal and have quirky ways. They are so utterly English, perfect gentlemen, deeply kind and thoroughly unfashionable. JRM is one of the nicest members of parliament - even the SNP think so. Just lazy idiots who think otherwise. www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/mar/12/mhairi-black-may-quit-depressing-parliament-after-single-term-as-mp

It’s increasingly difficult to tell between sincerity and satire these days.

What’s with all the strange characters in the Metro article? I can barely read it!

That’s the whole point! It’s quite clever and funny. They’ve substituted all the “s” characters with a Middle English style letter.
Readable, but makes their point. (to some readers!)

Of all the things to object to about JRM, his quasi-archaic approach to dating letters is one of the least consequential things. In fact, it's probably one of the most charming facets of his personality. Although in his case, that bar is set spectacularly low...

I don't object to it in principle - I love daft things like this. It makes life more fun!

I roll my eyes at JRM doing it, because we all know full well he puts on these sorts of ridiculous affectations for attention.

Despite my deep disdain for the tories, I would find it charming if any other tory MP did it, to be honest (though it wouldn't be enough to stop me disliking them, obviously).

CPL593H · 25/10/2022 22:26

I said on another thread that he mentioned it last year

"The French are always grumpy in October, the anniversaries of Trafalgar and Agincourt upset them." (Twitter 2/11/21)

On Twitter no less, amazingly. He's also mentioned Agincourt during a filibuster in the Commons. He knows what day it is, unlike practically all the British and the French who have moved on from the events of 600 years ago, I think most of us only made the connection because of the St Crispin's Day speech.

A lot of his studied affectations would only merit a raised eyebrow if he wasn't in a position of power. He isn't harmless, though.

Pearfacebanana · 25/10/2022 22:34

I don't know what time of day he resigned so who in fact was PM at that point (who does know these days!)

But I quite like to think It was Rishi and he went TFFT!

Bemoredog · 25/10/2022 22:42

And yet when checking my diary this morning before putting pen to paper, I saw it was 'Thank fuck Rees Mogg has gone' day.
How did he miss this?

medianewbie · 25/10/2022 22:42

That Metro article is quite splendidly spiffing, what !

newnamethanks · 25/10/2022 22:45

Getting Sacked by the new PM Day.
Dear Mumsnet. Rishi binned me, the bastard and I'm back, on the back benches with the other nonentities. I'm off to see Nanny now. She says it's not fair to treat a clever boy like me in such a way and I agree with her. I expect you all do as well. Farewell.

PvPn25671011 · 25/10/2022 23:01

He made money off brexit, which he peddled, whilst the rest of us go to pot. That’s right, when the pound tumbled as the rest of the world laughed at us for Brexit - he made a fortune off this turmoil. For the country he loves so dearly.

He also moved his business out of the Uk and into dublin if im not mistaken. After letting us all know the EU was no good for us.

His letter and sign off just add to the argument that this man is someone who is prob best leaving his cabinet position.

LemonSwan · 25/10/2022 23:08

Fucking hell his handwriting is atrocious!

ErrolTheDragon · 25/10/2022 23:20

Surely St Crispin's Day is the most inappropriate possible to resign on?

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 25/10/2022 23:25

JanglyBeads · 25/10/2022 19:55

The weird characters in the Metro article are the archaic typeface for S. They've tried to make it in tune with Rees Mogg!

Yes, this is probably his sole endearing quality! Although I quite liked the panama he was snapped in this summer.

Except that they don’t realise that you only use them in certain positions in words. Tried to mock ‘pretension’ , showed themselves up as ignorant.

He does it for the same reason he does anything.

Because he's a cunt.

He's really not a cunt, he lacks both the warmth and the depth.

TheTantrumoftheToddlerIsThere · 25/10/2022 23:33

I’m not sure if this has been brought up yet but I saw this scrolling Twitter and it made me laugh (Have I Got News for You Twitter page).

And you’ve just shown up that you’ve let it go right over your head 😆

They’ve exaggerated the usage to get the effect they wanted.

Few readers will know exactly where to use the letter - the point would be lost to use it accurately.
