Why are people so obsessed with adults only doing adult things?

Sat through another meal tonight with family where everyone made fun of my husband for skating. He takes it well and doesn’t let on that it makes him feel bad but I know it does. He has a great job, is a great husband and father, does his share of housework etc. I don’t see why it matters what he chooses to do in his down time. Does anyone else think like this or is it just our weird family? I feel like people do think like this a lot especially the way adults liking Disney etc is viewed in here but I just don’t get it.

Using Aibu for the poll.

yanbu- being over 18 is what makes you an adult nothing else

yabu- skating is for kids and he should grow up.

Roller, ice or board?

Begoniasforever · 24/10/2022 20:27

To be fair you are totally correct although I’d prob take the piss as well

JamSandle · 24/10/2022 20:27

I'm totally on the side of your husband. I'm a big kid and love loads of so called childish things. They bring me joy. Grow up sure but don't lose your inner child. These seem to be the people who need a drink to enjoy anything in my experience.

40andfit · 24/10/2022 20:28

Because they haven’t grown out of the teenage phase of not understanding when people want to do/enjoy something different to them.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 24/10/2022 20:29

I agree. Grab your joy where you find it whether it's skating or Disney or collecting Sweet Valley High books. People can be obsessed with being age appropriate. You see it a lot on the Style and Beauty boards 'am I too old at 55 to wear these trainers?' Wear the trainers if you like the trainers!

This is so true lol

Proteinpudding · 24/10/2022 20:33

A good friend of mine is from Colorado, and to him it's normal for adults to skate, mountain bike, snowboard... He finds it bizarre in the UK that the only seemingly acceptable things for adults to do are get drunk every weekend.

I suspect those taking the mick are secretly a bit jealous that they don't have the imagination/energy to do anything interesting!

44PumpLane · 24/10/2022 20:35

An adult berating or making fun of someone for their chosen hobby or passion is surely entirely more childish?!

Arenanewbie · 24/10/2022 20:35

No, it’s absolutely fine imo. Couldn’t vote by the way for some reason.
I presume he doesn’t do it wearing small skates or using kids skateboard, so he just does an activity, he doesn’t pretend that he’s a child.
Your family members were rude.

Dotcheck · 24/10/2022 20:35

Why can only children skate?

Bestcatmum · 24/10/2022 20:35

Well that's dumb, what's wrong with skating? i make dollshouses and all the furniture for me....not for kids. I get a huge amount of pleasure from creating something beautiful. I'd probably skate as well if I didn't have such bad arthritis.

BobStrangeNameforaGirl · 24/10/2022 20:37

YANBU. People are curiously judgy about things they perceive to be childish..I love Disney..I don't wear it or decorate my house with it but I love the simple joy of it. So many people think they can look down on it. Why? It just illustrates how intolerant and judgemental they are.

Picklewicklepickle · 24/10/2022 20:38

Half the miserable buggers on here think you can’t celebrate your birthday as an adult.

Don’t get them started on adult men enjoying video games…

LubaLuca · 24/10/2022 20:38

What kind of skating does he do? There are loads of types, some more adult than others.

If it's roller skating up and down out on the street near your house, then I would say that is a childish hobby.

tickticksnooze · 24/10/2022 20:40

What kind of skating?

Luredbyapomegranate · 24/10/2022 20:41

What’s wrong with skating / why is it different to cycling?

I would just say something like ‘this is getting tedious now’ fairly sharply, next time they do it.

It’s your family, so stand up for your DH

@LubaLuca

Why is it different from jogging? Who gives a shit?

notmyrealmoniker · 24/10/2022 20:44

I'm an adult and I love skating. Ice skating in my case, but any skating is enjoyable. If any family took the piss out of me I'd tell them where to get off in no uncertain terms. What is the difference between a high skill sport like skating which is a good lower body and cardio workout, and going to a boring gym?

DH bought me some of these for my 30th birthday and I did indeed skate up and down the street with my 5 year old DD at the time. Really didn’t care what anyone thought, we loved it.

Lemonsandlimez · 24/10/2022 20:47

Gahhh, I wish more people would do more of what they enjoy! Life isn't full of enough "play" for adults! Pat hubby on the back!

Judellie · 24/10/2022 20:49

I like to play on the swings whenever I get the chance! Love a go on the slide too but unfortunately many places only have toddler sized things now and have installed screens inside instead (how boring!).
Skating sounds great - if only I could do it; my 15 year old still loves her roller blades

daisyjgrey · 24/10/2022 20:49

I've been surrounded by skaters and surfers my whole life and in that community the older ones play a really important role.

Fuck everyone else off, what do they do all weekend? Drink shit wine and watch Strictly? Pfft.
