Why are people so obsessed with adults only doing adult things?

Sat through another meal tonight with family where everyone made fun of my husband for skating. He takes it well and doesn’t let on that it makes him feel bad but I know it does. He has a great job, is a great husband and father, does his share of housework etc. I don’t see why it matters what he chooses to do in his down time. Does anyone else think like this or is it just our weird family? I feel like people do think like this a lot especially the way adults liking Disney etc is viewed in here but I just don’t get it.

Using Aibu for the poll.

yanbu- being over 18 is what makes you an adult nothing else

yabu- skating is for kids and he should grow up.

A good friend of mine is from Colorado, and to him it's normal for adults to skate, mountain bike, snowboard... He finds it bizarre in the UK that the only seemingly acceptable things for adults to do are get drunk every weekend.

I suspect those taking the mick are secretly a bit jealous that they don't have the imagination/energy to do anything interesting!

This is very true . Nothing wrong with hobbies, physical or not .

MysteryBelle · 24/10/2022 23:26

Skating is for anyone, it’s not a kid’s game/sport. Look at the old films. Many adults skating. It is actually a gentlemanly sport like tennis.

I don’t get why he’s being made fun of. Skateboarding yes, I’d say for young people up through 20s ( I have no idea what I base this on, it just feels right 😂)

But regular skating, ice skating, all the other types of skating, adults certainly do these activities.

Hey, Rocky Balboa ice skates and he’s about as manly as you can get 😂

MysteryBelle · 24/10/2022 23:28

Hold on...I just checked, Rocky walks on the ice in his regular shoes, but I stand by my opinion!

Dibbydoos · 24/10/2022 23:34

I can't wait for electric scooters to be permitted outside of cities. I tried one in Reykjavik and it was brilliant. I'm 56 and I'll be riding one and feeling like I'm a kid again 😉

Your DH should carry on skating, good luck to him. Its good exercise (unlike an electric scooter, lol!)

Apollonia1 · 24/10/2022 23:35

I'm 50 and love ice skating. It never even entered my head that some people could think only children should do it? To me it's a sport, like skiing.
I'd love to learn to roller-blade, but afraid of breaking a bone.

Goatinthegarden · 24/10/2022 23:43

I had a bike as a child, but my mum was so safety conscious, I was hardly ever allowed to ride anywhere.

Now, I have three different bikes. I mountain bike, ride huge distances cross country and commute every day. I’m mid thirties, full of energy, have great mental health and am super fit because of it.

I’m sensible and take appropriate precautions. My mum still complains about the dangers of it. I just roll my eyes and tell her that I’d rather break my neck enjoying life than from boredom and loneliness in my old age. (I don’t have dependents).

Life is too short to care about whether, or not, others think you’re allowed to do something.

Tarkan · 25/10/2022 00:22

The best thing I ever did for myself in my life was to stop caring about what people thought of what I did in any part of my life.

I'm now in my 40s, I wear crazy leggings and dungarees despite not being young or slim and I don't care, I've dyed my hair various colours, I love watching cartoons of all kinds, DH and I have both started painting Warhammer models together, I enjoy YA fiction (especially vampire/supernatural/horror stories), I game, I play Pokémon Go and even manage our local group for it (which is almost all adults nowadays anyway), I collect rubber duckies and unicorn stuff, I love colouring in, I took up pole dancing at one point (and I will be going back when health issues mean I can), and my home decor is probably called eclectic at best. On my living room window sill you'll find a mixture of ornaments, Wade dishes, a dinosaur plant holder, a Toy Story alien plant pot and a crocheted Totoro, for example.

Life is too short to not do stuff that makes you happy. Ok, money/time/location may hold you back from some things, and I will say I don't always do everything I've listed, but there's always something else to find that will bring you joy and it's worth giving stuff a shot.

OP I'm so sorry about your upbringing restricting you from what you love so much, and I really hope you can find something that you will love doing, it sounds like your DH would be supportive at least. Don't ever be scared of being a beginner at anything either, everyone needs to start somewhere and even if one thing doesn't work out, it doesn't mean the next thing won't.

ATrueNerd · 25/10/2022 00:35

People just like to laugh at things that are a bit different to the norm to make themselves feel superior. They might be calling it “childish” in this case but it could easily be “geeky” if he was into fossil hunting or something. It’s like football supporting is the only hobby allowed 🙄

This! Absolutely!

Giggorata · 25/10/2022 04:40

I do dolls houses too @Bestcatmum, and I am never happier than when I'm mucking about in my own little world, including the hundreds of tiny dolls I have, all with their own histories, occupations and quirks.
I'm thinking of taking up LARP, now I have the time. And what is that but dressing up, play fighting and imaginative play?

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 25/10/2022 05:16

Begoniasforever · 24/10/2022 20:27

To be fair you are totally correct although I’d prob take the piss as well

Why? You sound like a mean person who gets their enjoyment from making fun of others. Maybe you should try skating, seems like you need some fun

emptythelitterbox · 25/10/2022 05:29

OP since ice skating is so far away, maybe you could take up roller skating with your DH! It'd be so much fun!

garlictwist · 25/10/2022 05:30

I took up BMX in my 30s. I wanted to learn something new that I could do as exercise in the dark at home. I live next to a flood lit skate park so thought, why not?

My sister thinks this is hilarious and is very mean about it but I don't care. I have been doing it for nearly 10 years now, have learned lots of new skills including perseverence, determination and hard work, and I have got very fit.

There are lots more women at the skate park since I started going (admittedly skateboarding) but it's certainly not just something for blokes/kids.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 25/10/2022 05:42

Since when is skating not for all ages?

Onlyforcake · 25/10/2022 05:53

I go with my teen to a regular roller night. There are adults there who skate.

Not that it matters, the 'weird' thing to do is to put someone down over something that they enjoy. What joyless arseholes.

heartbroken22 · 25/10/2022 06:04

It's because they wouldn't be daring enough to do it themselves at their age.

Theblackdogagain · 25/10/2022 06:10

I too was told as a child I'm not for dancing (my proportions are odd and I was called the sugar plump fairy). Also drama was not for me and I read too much.
It's taken to the age of 41 to be me. My dh and I do am dram together, and I dance when I can, I just avoid all mirrors. I've started tai chi and love it a lot.
I would love to LARP and maybe when the kids are older DH and I might give it a go.

Moon22 · 25/10/2022 06:28

I would just tell them it's not a childs activity. It's exercise. And why don't they try it.
People have far too much to say about other people don't they.

winewolfhowls · 25/10/2022 07:36

Roller skating is definitely fashionable at the moment.

At our rink you see TONS of adults in their 40s to sixties having beginners lessons, it's actually a good age to start when the kids are bigger or flown the nest.

Plus cheap compared to other hobbies.
