Tell me about Matched betting or other way to make money quick?

Keep seeing online that matched betting is a good way to earn a little bit of money for a short time. But I literally have no idea what it is or how to do it. The closest I come to gambling is buying lottery tickets, I know nothing about placing a bet, how to do it, what to pick etc. Is there an idiots guide somewhere to match betting? Is it really a quick way to make money, or do I need some skill at betting? Any other suggestions on ways to make some Christmas money?

Can I ask how people make a lot of money doing it when each bet on the profit accumulator offer site makes a profit of around £15 at best? I found it so time-consuming for very little reward and you need a lot of disposable cash to match the bets.

I've not persisted with it too far but I think it's more patience than anything. Most of my better bets have earned me around a tenner, and most less than that but it's just slow and steady. If you're doing it every day it can build up.

I'm at the point where I need to start doing multiples and i just haven't got the headspace for it at the mo so my float is just sitting there.

Start with lots of cash so you can always place a shit load of bets.

Take the time to do it.

Join something like OddsMonkey which shows you in a dashboard all the free bets you can claim that day.

The big one though is having plenty in the first place that you can use to place bets. It CAN be done by starting with a tenner, but that takes longer to make money as obviously you can only place one vet at a time for a while.

Looks like Amazon Flex estimate pay £13-£16 an hour for a 2-4 hour block, but they are careful to put caveats on that and it's based per delivery.

You have to have commercial insurance (they list companies that will do it by the week or hour)and of course petrol is expensive plus the wear and tear of turning your car on and off every few minutes so all of that has to be factored to come out of the £13-16 an hour. If you hit traffic or have an awkward or rural route, I can inagine that could very quickly become £9-£12 per hour

I think most of these schemes are set up to make very little, I tried them all up to about 10 years ago, the best I found was Avon but I still only ended up with an extra £20 every campaign once costs were taken out. As a PP says, the most reliable way to make extra £, if you have childcare, is to do part time at a local shop or bar. Or get a lodger, but you probably don't want that with young kids at home.

Amazon still pays you even if you don't deliver everything in your allocated time shift. So if you're stuck in traffic or have car issues, you just bring the parcels back to the depot and you still get paid in full

I have no idea what the climate for matched betting is like now but I did the profit accumulator method plus some casino and made nearly £3k in 2 months and started with £50.00

I stopped as I didn’t have time for it after maternity leave.

Those calling it gambling don’t know what it is. I don’t bet - before or since - and don’t really understand it but profit accumulator has a good guide and Facebook group.

JingsMahBucket · 22/10/2022 10:41

@XelaM thanks for answering my question. Good for him making a solid income. It’s interesting he hasn’t been banned yet if he’s making that much. I’m guessing he’s shifting emails / identities around enough? I have no idea about this stuff, just honestly curious.

Applesandcarrots · 22/10/2022 10:42

While it's not gambling (it doesn't take long to google it either for those thinking it is gambling), it is not recommended for people who are prone to addictions as they couldove onto the actual gambling.
Just an fyi

girlfriend44 · 22/10/2022 10:58

Someone who understands matched betting could make money if its possible showing other ppl what to do. I mean every step of the way a personal service.
I would pay for that . Probably not possible though. Let me know if it is.

Damnautocorrect · 22/10/2022 11:01

I never got my head around matched betting Blush
plus I didn’t have huge amounts to start with

cakeorwine · 22/10/2022 11:08

I used to do Matched Betting - but personally I didn't like being part of the gambling industry.

I understand it. I know how it works. But you are making money. If you use Betfair, where does the money come from when you place your other bet?

I was surprised by how many emails, offers and deals I got - for casinos, free bets, in play etc....

They really want you to gamble when you sign up to a betting company and bombard you with temptations.

Darbs76 · 22/10/2022 11:11

I made 1k on matched betting. It wasn’t too difficult - you need to watch the videos on profit accumulator. You can lose money though if you don’t place the bets correctly.

Onegingerhead · 22/10/2022 11:15

I made quite a bit of money with matched betting. Actually, I saw someone mentioning it on mumsnet about 4 years ago. Decided to dig in for info and in about a week in I started. You can use free resource of Team Profit (there is a group on FB) or paid services (Oddsmonkey or Profit accumulator). Check on Teams profit webpage for information, they have nice tutorials and explain everything in great details.
problem is you will get gubbed (banned from receiving promotions which is how you make money ultimately) sooner or later, so it’s not guaranteed income for life. I lost all of my account 2.5 years in. Good luck

DH liked to think of it as 'getting one over' on the industry 😆

You.
And it does work. I won 200 on one betting pool so of course I put couple of quid on it there and then. Like fiver total.😂 Nothing won again.

For addictive personality or adrenalin seekers, it can be quite dangerous. But it can be absolutely ok for someone who doesn't have issues

Postapocalypticcowgirl · 22/10/2022 11:58

Back in the day when matched betting was first becoming a thing, I had a friend at uni who did it and made pretty serious money (over £10k, I believe). As long as you are careful, you don't lose money, and if you are patient, you can make money from very little due to introductory offers etc (I would expect a lot around the world cup).

For those who don't understand (this is not a guide, obviously), you effectively bet on all possible outcomes of an event e.g. with two football teams, you would bet on a team winning with one bookie, and then you might use a betting exchange to make a bet on that team losing, ensuring either return would give you back your stake and hopefully a bit more.

In the early days of matched betting, people did make a lot of money doing it. But the gambling companies are now quick to ban those they think are matched betters, so it's much harder to make really big money.

If anything, the fact that the "house" will ban matched betters shows it works! They don't ban those who are addicts and losing lots of money on a weekly basis- they ban the ones who are making money out of the industry!

Postapocalypticcowgirl · 22/10/2022 11:59

And yes, you're opening yourself up to bookies bombarding you with loads of offers, so it's only a good idea if you are disciplined, and not likely to get sucked in to other forms of gambling.

cakeorwine · 22/10/2022 12:05

So now I am getting betting ads on the side bar now.

cakeorwine · 22/10/2022 12:07

you would bet on a team winning with one bookie, and then you might use a betting exchange to make a bet on that team losing, ensuring either return would give you back your stake and hopefully a bit more

And that for me is the issue.

People who use betting exchanges - effectively you are not placing a bet with a bookie but you are placing a bet with someone else who is happy to take the odds.

You have the matched bet elsewhere but they don't. They are just a gambler looking to make money.

And that's an issue for me.

BoneBonita · 22/10/2022 13:01

I remember at the height of my matched betting “career” I placed a £20 bet on the underdog in an Anthony Joshua fight - it was a genuine bet, no lay. The underdog won and I got a few £100 for it … the betting site gubbed me which was ironic as I’d made hundreds out of them matched betting but the one genuine bet I placed got me banned 😂

BoobBoobBaby · 22/10/2022 13:08

This is really interesting, thanks! I don’t think I’m prone to gambling so I think I’ll look into some of these suggested sites

I'm still refusing to check my Euromillions ticket so I can fantasise about how to spend my millions... luckily DH is the sensible one. I'd have us out of house and home if I got sucked into the gambling world!

Coasterfan · 22/10/2022 13:30

I made about £1000 a few years ago using all the free bet offers on Team Profit. Once you have used the free offers it becomes more time consuming and complicated. I never made a mistake and lost money, you just have to take your time and make sure you fully understand it before starting.

On the Money Matters section on here there is a make £10 a day thread, a lot on there work for a site called Appen, the projects pay £10 to £15 an hour, some are only an hour a day, some you need to commit 10 to 20 hours a week. A few years ago I paid DDs school fees for a year doing this, made between £1000 and £1500 a month extra. I only stopped because my main business went mad during lockdown and has stayed strong since.

ImaniMumsnet · 22/10/2022 13:41

Hello everyone
We've had a number of reports from people concerned about this thread so, as we usually do in these circs, we're putting our heads round the door with some important reminders.

Right now we can't see any evidence to indicate that the OP isn't above board – if we did, we'd remove the thread straight away. But the truth is that, sadly, we at MNHQ can't know with 100% certainty that any poster is genuine, no matter who they are or how long they have been here. As frustrating as it is, we're not able to vouch for anyone here.

So we always ask users to remember that not everyone on the internet is who they say they are – and remind folk not to give more to another poster, either financially (in cash or gifts) or emotionally (in time or care and support) than they'd be prepared to lose if things went wrong.
Though, we strongly advise against parting with any cash or giving away your personal details, and if you receive a PM which makes you uneasy - report it to us and we’ll take a look.

We've compiled some useful links posted by Mumsnetters into a financial issues webguide, so that people experiencing difficulties can find all the relevant information in one place.

Sorry to hijack your thread briefly there, OP – we really hope you get it all sorted soon.

If you're short on exchange money you can balance out your bookie bets to minimise exchange liability - eg back Arsenal to win at one bookie and to draw at another. Exchange liability is reduced that way.

Another gubbee here! Good days!
