Tell me about Matched betting or other way to make money quick?

Keep seeing online that matched betting is a good way to earn a little bit of money for a short time. But I literally have no idea what it is or how to do it. The closest I come to gambling is buying lottery tickets, I know nothing about placing a bet, how to do it, what to pick etc. Is there an idiots guide somewhere to match betting? Is it really a quick way to make money, or do I need some skill at betting? Any other suggestions on ways to make some Christmas money?

I made £5k matched betting. I’m now banned from every big gambling site going though so can’t do it anymore. It was good while it lasted.

It is impossible to lose money if you do it correctly,

So you can lose if you make a mistake?

Yes if you make a mistake you can lose money. Just make sure you don’t rush and follow the guides. Though I’m not sure it’s for people who aren’t good with numbers. I find it easy and have never made a mistake but numbers and maths are a strong point for me.

PrioritiseCalm · 22/10/2022 09:12

@XelaM what is Amazon flex?

terriblyangryattimes · 22/10/2022 09:15

It's very time consuming, in that you have to prove who you are with all the betting sites (understandably) and your bank may block transactions as they may think they're not being carried out by you (IE lots of gambling websites in a short space of time)

I don't really understand it myself but a few years ago when my husband was between jobs he did it (with spreadsheets and the help of profit accumulator) and made over a grand in a month or so BUT was working on it 3 or 4 hours a day, constantly checking apps and websites etc.

If you have the time to ensure you fully understand it and appreciate that if you forget to place a 'matched' bet that you will lose the money then no reason why you can't do well. There is also a chance to win on random draws etc on the betting websites you use. There is a money blogger called Kate Kicker (I think) who writes about this - she had a big win doing it if I remember correctly.

WizardOfUK · 22/10/2022 09:16

Bookies and gambling websites never EVER make a loss, there's a reason so many are in business, because it's lucrative.

You won't make money quick, chances are you will lose money quick

Have a look at what you can make and then sell, can you wfh during an evening, do you have a knack for something? Sewing, crafts, make Xmas cards and sell on Etsy?

Applesandcarrots · 22/10/2022 09:17

I have to admit that I consider myself relatively smart but never managed to make xxx thousands on it like some people report.
I am strongly assuming that these have time for it not 15-30 min a day so have time to put in all the £1 bets etc.

Extra job would probably pay more

genome · 22/10/2022 09:25

This reads a bit like an advert for these sites 🤔
If it's not then I would steer well clear of betting, it wouldn't be an industry if it wasn't set up for people to lose money overall. Short term gains can be made, but easy to lose it all and get dragged into an addiction.

MingoDringo · 22/10/2022 09:26

I made £10k match betting before getting gubbed.

PanettoneMoly · 22/10/2022 09:36

I made a grand on matched betting to put towards my wedding but over about 6 months. Gave myself the target of £1,000 and gave up after that. Only misjudged a bet once (placed one side of the bet then got distracted) and lost, maybe a tenner, but that came off my accumulated winnings if that makes sense, so I wasn’t actually a tenner down in IRL cash.

I found the oddsmonkey site really useful, you need to do a bit of research around which betting firms own what so you don’t place and lay your bets with the same parent company, and I got gubbed a couple of times but otherwise, if you’re careful & methodical, and understand the process then 🤷🏻‍♀️

Re: a PP above, “Bookies and gambling websites never EVER make a loss”, well, no but the point of matched betting isn’t to gamble and win, it’s to find & take advantage of differences in the offered odds on different sites and, quite literally, hedge your bet.

MichaelFabricantsWig · 22/10/2022 09:37

Matched betting is like anything , if you have time and money to throw at it it makes money, and could make a lot. It's not so lucrative now as it was as bookies are quicker to gub (they hate matched betters) and the offers are no where near as good, you used to be able to make around 1-1.5k just from the opening offers. I made a very decent amount over around 3 years.

I have a toddler and work, I don’t have time to even spend more than 30 mins per day, sometimes none at all. I made £200 last week, it just takes a bit of time and effort to learn it and it’s a slow start, but once you know how to do it you can do an offer in a few mins from your phone.

BEAM123 · 22/10/2022 09:43

Looks like Amazon Flex estimate pay £13-£16 an hour for a 2-4 hour block, but they are careful to put caveats on that and it's based per delivery.

You have to have commercial insurance (they list companies that will do it by the week or hour)and of course petrol is expensive plus the wear and tear of turning your car on and off every few minutes so all of that has to be factored to come out of the £13-16 an hour. If you hit traffic or have an awkward or rural route, I can inagine that could very quickly become £9-£12 per hour

I think most of these schemes are set up to make very little, I tried them all up to about 10 years ago, the best I found was Avon but I still only ended up with an extra £20 every campaign once costs were taken out. As a PP says, the most reliable way to make extra £, if you have childcare, is to do part time at a local shop or bar. Or get a lodger, but you probably don't want that with young kids at home.

XelaM · 22/10/2022 08:55

It's not possible to lose money on Matched Betting if you do it correctly. It's not gambling in the ordinary sense.

OP - you need a lot of disposable cash to make money on Matched Betting though and you make small amounts at a time (around £15 on each bet or so) plus you need to pay for a subscription to either profit accumulator or another equivalent site. I found it quite time-consuming but I know someone who does it as his main job and has a good income from it. He had a lot of starting capital though.

I found it easier to make a bit of extra money doing AmazonFlex.

@XelaM genuine question: what does “good income” mean in this context? Is it like an extra £1000 per month to supplement his primary income? Or is he getting like £3000 a month? This is really intriguing!

ChineAndWheeseParty · 22/10/2022 09:51

I made a fairly easy £1k last year with matched betting.

silvercurls · 22/10/2022 09:55

I've just had £200 deposited in my bank from switching my bank account to Nationwide.minimal work, good payout

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 22/10/2022 10:00

Matched betting is great, I did it for a year and made 4 figures - but there IS an expiration date on it as eventually you either run out of offers or get ‘gubbed’ which means the betting sites no longer let you take advantage of offers. It’s easy though all round and will be lucrative with the World Cup coming up

blanketyblank97 · 22/10/2022 08:48

It's a fabulous way to lose money that you don't have. Do you honestly think everyone wins?

You don’t know what Matched Betting is, do you?

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 22/10/2022 10:03

OP this site is really helpful for explaining everything about matched betting

www.teamprofit.com/matched-betting-guide

Ignore the divvies telling you to get a job, or that you will lose money - they don’t understand matched betting and they don’t u sweat and that it isn’t gambling and you cannot lose, unless you do it wrong.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 22/10/2022 10:07

Confrontayshunme · 22/10/2022 09:01

I still maintain that working a few hours extra on a different job will make the money. If you have a job, it should be even easier. I started working the breakfast shift at a cafe near us recently and make an extra 40 quid a week. I have heard far more bad outcomes from matched betting in real life than I have good ones. People on here can say they have been successful at it, but in real life, I have never heard of anyone doing it to the point of being able to afford extra Christmas presents. They are all skint and still skint.

Fucking hell, I’d rather do matched betting in my warm bed for an hour on an evening to make £40 than slog my guts out all week serving breakfasts at the arse crack of dawn.

I made money on matched betting. Probably about £6,000 IIRC (not done it since just after lockdown). It does come to an end but it’s a very easy way to make cash with not much effort. The thing is you can’t make mistakes - I learnt the hard way, luckily only lost about £30 once because I didn’t place a back bet properly. It’s something you only do once though!

@OoooohMatron I've read my post five times, I can't see the word gambling in it?

So, WTF are you taking about? You need to actually read what's written before you comment!

You think everyone wins at matched betting, never an error made?

www.comparethemarket.com/meerkat-your-life/articles/matched-betting-bad-for-your-money-and-your-mental-health/?amp

You may want to read this article, although you struggle with three short lines to comprehend and understand, so it may be a struggle!

WTF.

You gave a really inaccurate picture of matched betting in ‘three short lines’. You said OP would lose money. That’s not true, providing she did everything accurately. What’s the the stinking attitude just because you got called out on your inaccurate post?

Matched betting is NOT gambling. Does it really need to be repeated over and over?

You can make money, a lot of money and it doesn't take that long. You just need to read, read, read, read and read how to do it and make sure you understand totally before you start.

I had never made a bet in my life plus I am absolutely terrible at maths but I made around £3,000 last year. I also did not spend hours and hours a day doing matched betting, more like an hour a day

XelaM · 22/10/2022 10:10

Can I ask how people make a lot of money doing it when each bet on the profit accumulator offer site makes a profit of around £15 at best? I found it so time-consuming for very little reward and you need a lot of disposable cash to match the bets.

blanketyblank97 · 22/10/2022 09:06

It is impossible to lose money if you do it correctly,

So you can lose if you make a mistake?

Yes - like in literally everything you do if you’re earning money.

but OP won’t be going in with the idea of making mistakes I imagine. It’s actually quite hard to make mistakes in matched betting (I managed once however!) and unlikely it would happen.

Thats like saying “You will keep your job unless you commit gross misconduct” and you saying “So you can lose your job then!” 😂

He makes a lot of money on this. I don't know if it's 30K a month but it's his primary job and he and his wife have a very nice lifestyle, but he had a lot of disposable cash as starting capital from an inheritance.
