In thinking my manager is hugely insensitive for wearing these things into work?

Our department head is very young and glamorous and is fairly new to the company. We know her salary range as it was stated alongside the job advert (a six figure salary whilst the rest of the team are lucky to earn a quarter of that). Every day she swans in to the office like she’s dressed for the catwalk, different designer handbags (the very obvious types - think Gucci, LV etc), Rolex watch, Cartier bracelets, designer belts and shoes. Not to mention the perfect nails, hair and everything else that we just cannot afford these days.

Meanwhile our large team is underpaid and overworked. The recent financial climate means many of us are struggling to heat our homes, worrying about mortgage/rental price hikes and generally having to really cut back. We are all office based and this is something we talk about frequently in conversation, so she’s completely aware of this. She’s previously had the cheek to say that we are all feeling the pinch given the financial situation, which is an absolute insult when she rubs her wealth in our faces 5 days a week.

AIBU in feeling completely incensed by this and wondering how on earth she can think it’s appropriate?! The whole team are upset with this and considering raising it with HR.

#teamglamboss for the win. I hope she drives her Maserati to work tomorrow. Actually - I hope her driver drives her to work in her Maserati tomorrow.

murasaki · 20/10/2022 22:05

Well paid, obviously

stockpilingallthecheese · 20/10/2022 22:05

Surely this should motivate you to keep progressing your own career? Plus she can choose to spend her money on what she likes! You don't know what kind of house she lives in, what her other outgoings are, what her partner earns if she has one etc.

Maireas · 20/10/2022 22:05

blebbleb · 20/10/2022 22:04

@Maireas I hope she goes to HR herself if that's the case!

I hope she does!

MrsToadflax · 20/10/2022 22:05

So you would be asking for a company-wide policy (as it can't only be applicable to her), listing every designer brands as a no go, plus any kind of personal care such as nails or hair extensions? Absolutely ridiculous. She is senior, on a high salary, so of course she dresses in line with this. There is no way HR would tell her to only buy leatherette handbags. It is absolutely her right to spend her money on what she wants. Are you also asking HR for professional development in order to progress up the career ladder or just sitting around moaning about someone who has achieved more than you?

Abcdefgh1234 · 20/10/2022 22:05

She can dress and wear anything that she likes. She earned it. I smell jealousy here. I wear my chanel bag for school drop off. Why? Because i like it. I dont have any means to makes people jealous. I earns the money and i can wear anything that i like. Same like your dept head.

FindingMyself1999 · 20/10/2022 22:06

My boss was like this I aspired to make as much money as her.

I looked online and automatically wished I didn’t

Ok, just stop that now.
Seriously, you're looking at her belts, and researching the cost online?

saltofcelery · 20/10/2022 22:06

It wouldn't bother me, but only because I think those people wearing obvious designer labels look completely tacky.

ArcaneWireless · 20/10/2022 22:06

I am fat and ugly.

This is like me being complaining to HR that someone thin and beautiful is my gaffer.

They’d be kicking my arse once they’d stopped laughing.

I fear you’d get the same.

grayhairdontcare · 20/10/2022 22:06

Someone can afford higher brands and wears them and you all want to complain?
Jesus Christ... get a grip!

She could have got all that before money was tight. I don't understand. Doesn't sound like your cup of tea but she hasn't done anything wrong.

Are you going to be annoyed if people spend on takeaways and talk about it? Drive nice cars? Spend on a concert or treat?

Alliswells · 20/10/2022 22:06

I'm going to go to HR too as I have a similar situation.... My boss drives a more expensive car than me! How dare she! She is clearly rubbing my nose in it. And she's younger than me the flaunty cow.

Supercal00 · 20/10/2022 22:07

She isn’t doing this to upset anyone and is entitled to wear what she wants. For all you know it’s all fake. If she breaks a policy that’s a HR issue not what she wears, it’s discrimination if you expect a company to control what someone wears. What if they asked you to wear a certain type of clothes you didn’t own so you had to go and buy some? Whilst i appreciate the current climate is upsetting it’s really toxic of you all to focus that on one individual for dressing the way she can do.

PartyHelp · 20/10/2022 22:07

I really hope this isn't real because it is beyond pathetic.
You are struggling to heat your home and pay for things but your mental health is being impacted by what someone else wears and how well they look.
How do have the time or energy to care what someone else wears? Just forget about it and get on with your own job and life. What she is paid doesn't impact you unless you are doing her job for her (which it doesn't sound like you are).
You and the rest of your team will just sound jealous and ridiculous if you go to HR so I wouldn't recommend it.

StripeyMow · 20/10/2022 22:07

I can’t believe you are googling what she wears, seriously do you not have anything better to do? Like work?

Starlia · 20/10/2022 22:07

You're not jealous but you looked up her belt on the internet to see how much it cost?

That is weird, stalker-y and unhinged behaviour. And there is a whole group of you?

You can't control how other people dress. Honestly this is so bizarre I can't believe you have to be told that you can't control what other people wear.

I hear you op. I remember when my manager had the audacity to invite us to her party in her lovely house with a big garden and a pizza oven when I only live in a one bed tenement flat with rogue squirrels in the communal garden. Raging.

Oh wait. No. I complimented her house and said thank you.

lentilly · 20/10/2022 22:08

Oh no what is that!!!! Why do that? Jeez
