I can't believe Liz Truss is 47..

Following on from a thread yesterday, I guessed Liz was 56. I was shocked to hear she's a decade younger. I guess I am being unreasonable. It was probably the photo of her having a meeting wearing comfy trainers that did it. How old would you have guessed she was?

FFS!

Exactly OP is being bitchy!

Benjispruce4 · 08/10/2022 07:38

I thought she was my age or a bit older-I’m 51.

SallyWD · 08/10/2022 07:38

I don't know. Can't stand her but I don't think she looks particularly old. 47 seems about right.

I disagree. Male PMs, MPs, politicians and presidents have all been objectified. Dishy Rishy, President Macron, Dominic Rasb, comments about Boris's weight, hair, male politicians teeth, body ...

JuliaDorneys · 08/10/2022 07:41

Se does look much older than she is. I'd have guessed late 50s or even a 'good' early 60s. I have friends in their early 60s who look 'her age'.

I don't know why she's aged so much compared to her generation.

I also wish (and I've seen this comment elsewhere on fashion pages of the broadsheets) that she would get a smarter outfit, like a suit, instead of the same-y style dresses.

Her outfit when she met King Charles was a joke ( a full skirted black dress that swamped her and made her look as if she was off to a Halloween party.)

okytdvhuoo · 08/10/2022 07:42

I actually think she looks great and would put her at about 50. I’m NOT a fan and not a conservative voter but wtf anyway is this relevant.

LuciaPopp · 08/10/2022 07:43

Yes she does come across as older- partly her looks, partly her style and partly her manner, I think. Hard to believe she is 2 years younger than Penny Mordaunt. But part of that difference is in manner- Penny comes across as younger because she behaves more naturally whereas Liz is very stiff and awkward.

I don’t think it’s wrong to comment- people comment on male politicians all the time (look at Boris and Rishi). But it’s obviously not the important thing about her.

ivykaty44 · 08/10/2022 07:43

I sodding hate everything she stands for. But...her age? Who cares. You are buying into male mysogyny. She could look like Marilyn Monroe. She'd still be hell bend on destroying public services.

^^ this

Oh so you mean you never, ever saw any comments about Boris' hair? Poorly fitting suits?

Or, Jezz's outfits?

The men- even leaders of the opposition - have had their clothes scrutinised.

topcat2014 · 08/10/2022 07:44

Ex pm's generally look a few years younger after they finish.

Sir John Major looked ancient as pm to me. But he's only in his 70s now.

TheVanguardSix · 08/10/2022 07:44

She just looks like a Farley’s rusk… without its charisma.

There were many, many comments on Bojo’s looks.

JuliaDorneys · 08/10/2022 07:48

Anyone in the public eye in a top role is going to have their clothes and appearance commented on.

Fact.

Women have a harder time simply because there is more scope for variation compared to men, who tend NOT to be into skin care products, changing their hair style, colouring their hair.

Women dye their hair, wear make up, wear suits or dresses, whereas men tend to have the same haircut, wear suits, and there is not a LOT of scope for comments (unless they are especially scruffy.)

luxxlisbon · 08/10/2022 07:48

She looks a lot older than her age, and presumably trying to run this shambolic government will age her another decade over the next 12 months.
Boris looked haggard when he got carted out.

Oddsocks12 · 08/10/2022 07:49

I'm quite shocked. I thought she was mid 50s too!

luxxlisbon · 08/10/2022 07:51

*Do we do this to male Prime Ministers?

Yes, all the time.
Don’t play the dumb ‘poor women’ card when it’s not appropriate. It means actual misogyny is not taken seriously.
Boris was commented on all the time for his messy hair, dozy expressions, bad suits. Corbyn received equal negative attention over not wearing a tie, being old, looking like a geography teacher.

WTAFSomedays · 08/10/2022 07:52

Attack her for her policies not her looks. Ridiculous OP.

Agree with this.

I'm furious they've risked pensions and mortgages and don't care if she is 12 or 112, she is shit, we didn't elect her and she's talking about removing bloody childcare now!

Ageism and misogyny.
What does her age or appearance have to do with anything?
It's what she stands for that is rank.
Don't stoop so low as to round up other women to 'appraise' her appearance.
This is patriarchy.

This is an unfair assessment and please don't tell us all what we are thinking and why we are thinking it!

I do exactly the same to males.

Tangled123 · 08/10/2022 07:55

I don’t watch her interviews or anything so won’t comment on what age I thought she was, but she’s done very well to be PM in her 40s.
I think people saying they thought she was older isn’t necessarily the insult some posters think it is. I actually think that view is more insulting as it implies there’s something wrong with being or looking old.

Lunificent · 08/10/2022 07:55

I think she looks exactly her age. I’m 52 and I can tell she doesn’t look as old as me.

MarshaBradyo · 08/10/2022 07:56

It isn’t just PMs who get this but women in the work place - ageism and misogyny is rife if you happen to work and not looking young enough

YourUserNameMustBeAtLeast3Characters · 08/10/2022 07:58

I was surprised that she’s younger than me (just) but I probably look older than I think I look. I’m interested in her age because for the first time there is a prime minister who has grown up with a similar background to me - educated entirely during the Tory years, not Eton, university as the grants were ending, came into the workplace just after a recession and the same early-20s when labour got in on the back of huge optimism.

How she ended up with her political views and economic theories, is a bit of a mystery to me.
