To want to look my age?!

wingingit33 · 06/10/2022 12:08

I'm 34 and yet I look 14. Honestly. I'm sick of the stares and comments when I tell people I'm a mum of three and the eldest is 12.

I dress to my age. I think so anyway! My hair is always shoved up in a ponytail or mum bun otherwise the baby yanks it.

It's becoming a bore now though. Yes "I'll appreciate it when I'm older" blah blah but what can I do to look like the professional woman / mid thirties mum that I am!!?

You do you look age, because you are that age and you look the way you look.

BadNomad · 06/10/2022 20:12

I think people are just bad at guessing ages.

True. There was one recently where the woman was about 60.
Guesses ranged from about 30-75.
🙄

That was the one I was thinking of!

TheLostNights · 06/10/2022 22:28

I must have imagined all my past experiences then. It's embarrassing as hell being thought of as a young, early twenties something when you are approaching middle age. I have tried everything in order to look older but nothing works. You can't change facial features or body shapes. I would do anything to look like one of my friends who looks their age and doesn't have to end up in embarrassing or awkward situations all the time because of how wrong they are about me and my age.

SirChenjins · 06/10/2022 22:34

I really don’t believe you look 20-30 years younger than your actual age.

Who did they think the 12yo was? Mum or toddler?

🤣🤣🤣

Maireas · 06/10/2022 23:02

34 years old and the nurse mistaking her for a 12 year old?

NippyWoowoo · 06/10/2022 23:54

I’d love a thread of all the 12 year old lookalikes posting pics 😇

I feel your pain OP. I look like a fetus. I'm constantly asked I'f I've even been born yet I'm so youthful looking. Its career limiting and my children look like my grandparents, so quite embarassing for them too. Are the people insulting them saying they look old, whilst complementing me on my baby face looks 🤔 who knows. It's a mystery.

Darling, that is nothing. I am constantly mistaken for an ovum. It is so very tiresome.

People assuming that they aren't being taken seriously in a professional context because they look young - couldn't this actually be a case of not being taken seriously because you're female? The patriachy is real!

For me it's the perceptions of members of public/potential clients/patients - for example in any medical or caring type profession. I've often heard people say they wouldn't want to see a psychotherapist who is younger than them - now imagine a therapist who is actually 40 but looks under 30, a lot of potential clients will just not even contact them based on how they look in their photo. Or especially older people who will not trust a doctor or a dentist or a vet who appears very young (even though they're not and have 20 years experience under their belt!).

How would you know this is happening though? As presumably you never hear from the ones who would instantly dismiss you due to looking young therefore aren't privy to that thought process?

Poor OP. Have kids - within a few weeks you'll look (and feel) your age and then some.

I see you already have kids, dammit! Just me then feeling and looking old...

She has a 12 year old daughter. A nurse thought that the OP was the 12 year old.

Not just you.

Had family visiting me and 6mo DS today. Both relatives said (seperately, I hasten to ask) that I look tired.

Cheers.

No idea who Tina O'Brien is, but she looks approaching middle age, which according to posters here is her actual age.

I do know of people who think they're young because they're so short they're often mistaken, at a distance, or from behind, their young children. Close up their age becomes evident. Unlike the OP then.

TheLostNights · 08/10/2022 18:45

In Lidl today and the person in front of me got a leaflet about the app.
I didn't get the same so asked for one and the cashier said 'I didn't ask as didn't think you were old enough.' When I looked, I saw you had to be 18. I am 37. Yet I know everyone here will say she is joking, she didn't look at me properly, I am dreaming it etc so not even sure why I'm posting again.
😞
