As it's near the end of the thread, and I'm in a silly mood, I think I will reveal that I know @AskingQuestionsAllTheTime from elsewhere on MN. I also know that she knows the name of Shula's donkey (Shula is a woman from a long running farming drama on BBC Radio4) I've had to do a bit of name changing recently. The username I currently post under reflects the fact that I like putting things in the right order <enigmatic Wink> But MN won't let me change names mid-thread any more...

AcrossthePond55 · 29/09/2023 03:09

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime

but I preferred the Girl from U.N.C.L.E.'s sidekick Mark Slate to either Illya or Napoleon

I remember him! Noel Harrison, son of Sir Rex. He had a radio hit here with Leonard Cohen's song 'Suzanne'. He was quite dishy, yes.

@TheSilveryPussycat

John always struck me as a bit self-centered. And of course I've never forgiven him and Yoko for 'breaking up the Beatles'. And yes, Ringo is definitely the coolest Beatle.

I remember seeing them on the Ed Sullivan Show in their US debut when I was in elementary school. They showed close ups of each one with their name and when they showed John it said below his name "Sorry girls, he's married". lol

So, you know Asking's 'secret identity', eh? Is that similar to knowing that Diana Prince is really Wonder Woman?

PS I'm enjoying the silliness. We all need a bit (or more than a bit) of silliness in our lives!

TheSilveryPussycat · 29/09/2023 10:41

@AcrossthePond55 I don't know @AskingQuestionsAllTheTime's secret identity. For some years we've both been posting on a very long running thread over in Radio Addicts Grin

There was also the slightly regrettable "Windmills of you Mind".

File that along with Peter Sarstedt's "Where do you go to my lovely", which after "I am a Cathedral" was a terrible disappointment to me.

Meanwhile and slightly more on-topic, I am utterly delighted by the notion that Trump my lose a portion of his (already grossly exaggerated) wealth if New York actually does sanction him by forbidding him and his repulsive brats to trade there, but I am not holding my breath. Steve Bannon is not yet in prison, after all. (I think I prefer the British system in which the sentence is passed and the crim goes directly from court to jail, with appeals being heard once he's safely inside and needing some actual reason from the trial to be allowed to happen at all...)

Before we get "back to the USA" (yes, I know it's a misquoteWink) I still listen to Windmills of my Mind, I think it's great. Where do you go to my lovely, is and always has been, pretentious, irritating twaddle!

TheSilveryPussycat · 29/09/2023 15:25

No-one has explained the mysterious system that is dealing with Trump's fraud. It seems all backwards to me! The judge decides, but there's a jury and the trial's not finished yet? CNN is no help, as they assume I already know the process.

I think Canyons of your Mind is better than any of them.

AcrossthePond55 · 29/09/2023 17:49

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime Problem is, the NY thing is a civil case so no jail time was ever possible. We'll have to wait for the Documents case and the GA case for that. But IMHO the thought of losing money is probably worse to him than the thought of an orange jumpsuit. He pitched hissies over not making the Forbes List.

@TheSilveryPussycat Ok, I think it went like this (IANAL): Trump's lawyer filed a motion for summary judgement to have the case tossed out as 'no one was (financially) injured' so it should be 'no harm, no foul, no case'. The judge, in considering this motion, ruled that that defense was basically bullshit. The acts themselves were the crime, money loss/no loss is not relevant. As part of this ruling the judge determined that what Trump & Co did in inflating values DOES meet the legal requirements of the crime. Ipso facto they are guilty of committing fraud. And (I think) due to the fact that Trump's team asked for the summary judgement, it now becomes a 'bench trial' and the judge will rule on the rest of the allegations, so no jury. The NY AG is asking for $250M and a bar to Trump et al having any businesses based in NY State. The judge will set the final penalties.

And if we're talking about 'records that should never have been made' I nominate Richard Harris' version of McArthur Park.

Amen. We have lost a real powerhouse. Not just for liberal politics, but also a voice for women and minorities.

As my dad would have said "A helluva woman!". My mum would then have said "Don't say hell".

TheSilveryPussycat · 30/09/2023 00:23

@AcrossthePond55 Nooo - I love McArthur Park!
Thanks for the explanation, I think I get it, but I may have to re-read it several times very slowly Grin

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime
I was roaring away at Archeology by The Rutles tonight. Neil Innes is a genius. (Yes, I know he's gone, but I'm sticking with "is.")

AcrossthePond55 · 30/09/2023 01:38

@TheSilveryPussycat

's OK. It confuses me, too. And I wrote it!😆

There have been twists and turns in that case that have sort of 'confused the process'. Well, not the process exactly, but have affected what a layperson feels 'should have happened' based on a simple knowledge of legal procedures. I'm sure Doofus' lawyers are pulling all the 'arguments' out their arses that they can possibly come up with, no matter how nonsensical they are.

The trial starts Monday and won't be televised. But I'm sure we'll get some first hand accounts from media in the courtroom and then some good legal commentary.

I hope we get some newly qualified court artists, one of whom accidentally broken his thumb so has a little difficulty sketching Grin

I present to you Ringo's masterpiece.

I would love to continue our born-in-the-early-fifties Boomer comparison of 1960's youth culture in the UK and US on another thread, if anyone would fancy it?

But where would such a thread belong?

TheSilveryPussycat · 30/09/2023 22:40

I've been wondering the same thing. But when I was in the late stages of my divorce, a decade or so ago, two other people who I'd met on the long-running Emotional Abuse Support thread on the Relationships board, started a chat just between us 3 somewhere, not sure where on MN, which lasted for a while. (We ended up meeting once in real life, when one of us held a freedom partySmile

I take it you are up for it, then, @AskingQuestionsAllTheTime ?

If it helps our US friends, I regularly stay up to 2am local time here. (At present, California is 8 hours behind England.) I sometimes attend Zoom events hosted from America, from a US Eastern Time Zone. They are usually in the evening for me, which is great timing actually. The now widespread use of Zoom is a huge benefit to the world, I think, so something good has come out of Covid.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 30/09/2023 22:43

I would happily discuss differences and similarities if I know where to go to do it, SilveryPussycat. Especially if it involved links to interesting songs!

Errr.... No, because I tend to take people's noms de net at face value. Essentially a simple soul, me.

And my message-thingy doesn't seem to be working either.

TheSilveryPussycat · 30/09/2023 23:24

see my post yesterday made at 2.15 am Wink
also some of the posts which follow it, where I explain a bit to Across. The posts are deliberately enigmatic, so as to protect my anonymity on here Smile

AcrossthePond55 · 01/10/2023 03:16

I think it's interesting and fun to discuss similarities and differences between the UK and US (or any other country). The only thing I worry about is that some of the threads on the US/UK issue can descend into US bashing and/or condescension by some posters (present company excepted of course!).

Not sure where we'd put such a thread, but I expect NOT in AIBU lol. If we wanted to keep it just to people who post on this thread, then maybe the Quiet Place. I've noticed a few threads that seem to be there to limit the number of posters to a small 'gathering'. Otherwise I guess Chat? I know threads in both places are deleted at 30 days, though.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 01/10/2023 11:56

It's a bit of a problem. Might there be a space in, oh, I don't know, somewhere media-related? Popular culture is mostly media, after all, allowing that if films are media, so are LPs and by extension singles.
