good.
and what happens now?

He turns up eventually (very eventually) and pleads the fifth for six hours, then goes home.

Will be watching this thread for developments. I've been a bit absent with concentrating on UK politics and the shitshow going on here!

So this is they way I'm understanding things as far as what may happen based on CNN and MSNBC commentators. The big hitch is whether or not the House retains its Dem majority. If they don't the committee and the subpoena are as dead as a doornail.

Subpoena gets issued. Trump files lawsuit or refuses to cooperate (or both). In the former case, he'll keep stalling the lawsuit as long as possible. In the latter case, the issue goes to the House floor for a vote as to whether or not to find him him in contempt and refer him to the DoJ for prosecution. In either case, he'll stall, or the House GOP members will, til after the midterms knowing that a GOP majority will disband the committee and render the subpoena moot. And unfortunately, right now it looks like the GOP may regain the majority.

Roussette · 14/10/2022 00:15

That sounds worrying Across

Yes, but that's all essentially a formality/public opinion issue. IMO, the committee (wisely) did it mostly so they can't be criticised for not giving him his day. As long as Biden is prez, the DOJ calls the shots on prosecution and they don't need a committee referral to go ahead with that, they need an indictment from the grand jury already convened for the Jan. 6 cases.

I'm not saying that if the Repubs win there won't be a world of shit, but they can't stop the DOJ from prosecuting should Garland et al be inclined. Frankly, the subpoena's not worth much anyway. If TFG were to actually show, he'd just lie if not under oath and take the fifth if under oath.

DuncinToffee · 14/10/2022 09:53

It is going to be a long drawn out process by the sounds of it

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 14/10/2022 11:52

Last I heard he is pretending he wants to turn up, and claiming he wants to know why they didn't let him give evidence sooner.

This makes him deliberately delaying an absolute certainty, I would think, since the truth is not in him.

greenacrylicpaint · 14/10/2022 19:37

or will he not be able to resist and bring a tiny violin?

DuncinToffee · 14/10/2022 19:46

Trump released a long letter this morning complaining about the Jan. 6 Committee, but he never responds to the panel's subpoena in that letter.
He does mention 'stolen election'

He always mentions "stolen election". He knows full well that it is a lie and has done since the end of 3rd November 2020, 4th November 2020 at the latest, but he continues to make the lying claim. It's one of the reasons I know that the truth is not in him.

DuncinToffee · 15/10/2022 10:23

I have watched some of the Jan 6 video clips, they were scary. In one, Pelosi was warning Pence not to tell anyone his location.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 15/10/2022 12:59

I rather hope that his braggadocio statement that he wants to give evidence, live, is taken up. Call his bluff! We know he is incapable of not rambling off into rants about how ill-done-by he is; if he does that under oath he is well-nigh certain to incriminate himself.

It's a stalling tactic. He'll start attaching ridiculous conditions to his supposed agreement to testify that the cmte will have to refuse for the session to have any validity at all. Then he'll say they are the ones 'obstructing the truth' or 'wouldn't allow him to testify'. The real point, though, of anything he does is to stall until after the midterms and hope the whole thing goes away. And it surely will if the GOP regains the majority.

As far as self incrimination, the likelihood of him telling the plain truth is as likely as me leaping the Empire State Bldg. He'll lie, redirect, blame, obfuscate, and take the 5th until his testimony is rendered worthless. After all, that's the only thing he's truly 'competent' at.

let's see...

AcrossthePond55 · 19/10/2022 23:30

Oh to be a fly on the wall! He either lied that it didn't happen or he lied that she was the aggressor and he the victim

At any rate, we know he lied all the way through it. His only truthful statement was probably in answer to 'state your name'. And I even wonder about that!

Wiki missed "Fuckwit McFartface". Oh wait. That's just what we call him. Among other things

You're still here Flowers I used to post - and start - these threads under a old username (relating to the sharp bits on a cat, if you like a riddle). I'm not sure Trump can run longer, although his bravado is still as strong and brash as ever. I can't imagine him actually running again in 2024 - how would that be legal? Should it be legal?

AcrossthePond55 · 20/10/2022 02:49

Hey there, sharpbitsonacat, good to 'see' you!

Unfortunately, it's legal. POTUS are allowed 2 terms. And there's nothing in the Constitution that says a convicted criminal can't be POTUS, other than a conviction for insurrection, rebellion, or giving 'aid and comfort to the enemy' (14th amendment). If a POTUS is impeached and convicted, Congress can vote that he's ineligible for 'federal office'. Doofus was impeached twice, but never convicted.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 20/10/2022 13:37

Michael Cohen reckons Trump won't run in 2024 because to do so would be very expensive for him in loss of income from his fund-collecting, of which at present he gets 90% to use as he wants. That freedom to spend 90% would stop the moment he had a campaign, because different law would then apply to the money he is conning our of his base.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 20/10/2022 18:31

He's done one deposition this week, and has another coming up over te videophones he mis-sold while he was still on The Apprentice. The vultures are definitely circling.

Judge Nichols has agreed to stay Bannon's prison sentence for the moment, pending a "timely" appeal.

DuncinToffee · 21/10/2022 20:05

The Jan. 6 select committee has formally subpoenaed Donald Trump, commanding him to appear for testimony on Nov. 14.

The panel wants documents from him by Nov. 4.
