@Roussette The section of the indictment which was an eye opener was pages 27 onwards about Jeffrey Clark, trying to get Acting Attorney General and Acting Deputy AG to cosign letters to State legislature about (non existent)evidence of fraud found by Dept of Justice. (this is immediately after Bill Barr got the boot)
It was basically Clark saying Trump has offered to make me AG but if you sign this, you can stay as AG. Don't sign and you're out.

Roussette · 05/08/2023 08:21

@BruceAndNosh Basically coercion then...

This from the article sums it up....

The thin line between Trump’s success and failure is why, despite the protests of conservative media personalities and Republican politicians, this indictment had to happen. There was no other choice. Even if his opponents must ultimately defeat him at the ballot box, it would have been untenable for the legal system to stay quiet in the face of an effort to put an end to the American experiment in republican self-government. Trump is the only president in the history of the United States to try to nullify an election and prevent the peaceful transfer of power. Extraordinary actions demand an extraordinary response.

We're all living through Watergate and Nixon times a million....

This whole shambles might finally be the much needed push to ditch the ridiculously complicated Electoral College system.
The article @Roussette linked to reiterated the inequality of the system in that some votes carry more weight than others. And - as Trump showed - it is open to interference AFTER individuals have voted.

BruceAndNosh · 05/08/2023 08:37

The indictment makes fascinating reading, if a little dry. Firstly the damning first hand quotes from Trump staff and other Republicans. Plus the refreshing resistance of some Republican state officials who supported Trump but refused to follow his will

Yes... and from the article...
There is also the broader problem of the American political system when taken in its entirety. There is the inequality of voting power among citizens I mentioned earlier — some votes are worth much more than others, whether it’s a vote for president, senator or member of the House — and the way that that inequality can encourage some voters to think of themselves as “more equal” and more entitled to power than others.

It's open to abuse isn't it...

I feel this indictment is the most important and should take precedence over all others in scheduling.
It shouldn't get pushed to December 2024 because Trump is too busy defending the hush money case

It's a left-over from the time when the fastest way to cross America was on horseback. (Yes, I know there were the railways, but Pony Express is just so much more Romantic...)

If the Democratic Party were insisting that the electoral college must be kept unaltered, I am fairly sure members of the Republican Party would be screaming about how unfair it was and how the system needed to be revised and modernised.

In fact, when they've managed to kill their party off and the majority of their loyal voters have died of old age, I fully expect them to be as cross about the electoral college as they are about mail-in votes at the moment even though mail-in votes are to their advantage because they benefit people too infirm to get to a polling station owing to age and decrepitude.

1am and Trump is spooked and trying to wriggle out of his "If you go after me, I'll come after you" post

Was it before or after that all-caps tweet that he made the very public personal attack on Jack Smith?

“You see the picture with the purple robe, he's a deranged human being. We're getting stronger by the day, somebody said ‘you should treat him nicer’…Let me tell you this guy's a lost soul, bad guy. They don’t get nicer. He’s a deranged sick person.”

Not sure whether that counts as a threat, but in this country it would probably be slander.

BruceAndNosh · 05/08/2023 18:13

I find it funny how Trump has chosen "deranged" and "mad dog" as his epithets of choice for Jack Smith. Smith looks like an introverted robot. I can't imagine him acting deranged!

TheSilveryPussycat · 05/08/2023 19:57

Simple projection by Trump Grin

AcrossthePond55 · 05/08/2023 21:41

Could he actually be losing it? I think this is probably the first time in his life he is seeing that he can't bribe or bully his way out of trouble. His usual 'layers and layers' of protection didn't work, either. He's been caught red-handed. And it looks more and more likely that none of his stooges is going to be 'taking a dive' on this for him and in fact, it's probable that one or more of them is probably likely to 'cut a deal'.

Or maybe he's going for a 'not mentally competent to stand trial' plea? Good luck with that, Mr 'Stable Genius'.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 05/08/2023 21:48

Or maybe he's going for a 'not mentally competent to stand trial' plea?

If he does, would he then have the unmitigated gall to stand for President? Probably. And the hard-core deplorables would probably vote for him, too.

Schrodinger's candidate

OMG that made me really LOL "Schrödinger's candidate" indeed!

So tell me, when do we get to lock him in a box and how long do we get to contemplate whether he's alive or is brain dead?

How about 561 years?

BruceAndNosh · 06/08/2023 20:17

Trump has "truthed" that he will be demanding recusal of "assigned" judge of Jan 6th case.
He can't have Aileen Cannon on ALL his cases!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 06/08/2023 20:19

He can demand all he wants, but will anyone heed his demands?

AcrossthePond55 · 06/08/2023 23:49

Another example of how he's lived his life: what Donnie wants, Donnie gets! Not this time, little man. Not this time.

BruceAndNosh · 07/08/2023 15:04

Trump's team have until 5pm EST to respond to protective order request .
I think they might be pushed for time as his latest lawyer (John?) Lauro seems to have spent the weekend being interviewed on TV.

AcrossthePond55 · 07/08/2023 20:09

Tick tock, tick tock. A little after 3pm on the East Coast. Better get a move on there, Lauro et al.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 07/08/2023 20:56

As so often happens, I am confused again.

Does anyone happen to know on what grounds the Fart wants Judge Chutkan to recuse herself, or be recused? In his somewhat confused tweetalike which starts "Deranged Jack Smith is going before his number on draft pick, the Judge of his 'dreams' (WHO MUST BE RECUSED!), in an attempt to take away my FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS," he doesn't say why she must be, and his lawyers don't seem to be interested in pushing for it.

(Also, what does "going before his number on draft pick" mean?)

BruceAndNosh · 07/08/2023 21:24

In a parallel discussion of Judge's recusal, Aileen Cannon made some order today which I couldn't really understand, but legal commentators seem to think was well out of order and may even be grounds to formally request her recusal.

BruceAndNosh · 07/08/2023 21:27

"going before his number on draft pick"
I think he meant number one draft pick. Sporting analogy. Chutkin is an Obama appointed judge who has been strict on other Jan 6th defendants.
Aileen Cannon would have been Trump's number 1 draft pick!

TheSilveryPussycat · 07/08/2023 22:39

But what is a number 1 draft pick?
The word "draft" in connection with the US evokes the Vietnam war to me. I don't know how it is a sporting analogy?

Is it the dream person you would pick to be on your team?
