It was a rhetorical question Wink - I knew he'd given a dangerous number of concessions Shock. In particular the ability of a single law maker to call a vote of no confidence in the speaker. Hmm

I can see a number of Shut Downs happening and Biden having to use his veto repeatedly, as well as Executive Orders.

Roussette · 07/01/2023 13:17

15 attempts at it? Blimey

I hope the Freedom Caucus gave McCarthy a map showing where they hid his balls. He'll probably want them back at some point.

We make jokes about it, but this will put some of the 'far-outest' of the far right in policy making positions where they're going to do their damnedest to continue Doofus' work of ruining this country and doing their utmost to roadblock Biden as well as stifling anything to do with the Jan 6 insurrection. I can hear their shredding machines revving up as we speak. We're looking at at least 2 years (next Gen'l Election) of this shit.

But I tell myself we survived 4 years of Doofus AND we have a Dem Senate majority to block legislation. We can get through this.

Scary and horribly familiar scenes in Brazil

Supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro stormed Congress in the capital on Sunday, climbing on top of its roof and breaking the glass in its windows. Other demonstrators were gathering outside the presidential palace and Supreme Court.

Wallaw · 09/01/2023 10:07

It would just be so sad if a few of these guys ended up developing an intimate acquaintance with the Brazilian prison system.

AcrossthePond55 · 09/01/2023 14:28

@Wallaw That incident happened in 2021. He was 'briefly detained, then released'.

Although it wouldn't surprise me to find out that some of the MAGA 'power crew' is giving advice to the Brazilian insurgents nowadays. But I think that none of them are going to put their bums on the line by actually traveling to Brazil.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 09/01/2023 17:05

Um... This concession McCarthy has made which says that any one member of congress can force a "motion to vacate": does that apply to Democrats as well as the Maga Crew (or the 20 Terrorists)? Because if so, isn't it going to come back and bite him in the left buttock on a daily basis, twice on Thursdays?

Damn! Should have known better than to forward without checking that.

Yes, they are. Bolsonaro is apparently in Orlando and, according to a Buenos Aires newspaper Bannon held a dinner with Bolsonaro's son and Farage on Wednesday.

Honestly. These people.

DuncinToffee · 09/01/2023 19:36

Bolsonaro has been admitted to hospital with abdominal problems, dodgy burger or hiding?

Donald Trump has withdrawn a lawsuit against New York Attorney General Letitia James after a judge accused him of using the courts to seek revenge.

Mr Trump's lawsuit was withdrawn on Friday, less than a day after he was rebuked by US District Judge Donald Middlebrooks who said it bordered on "frivolous".

The judge added that the former president had repeatedly used the courts to "seek revenge on political adversaries

He ordered Mr Trump to pay nearly $1m (£809,190) for another lawsuit filed against Hillary Clinton, which accused her and others of conspiring to "weave a false narrative" during the 2016 election that his campaign was colluding with Russia.".

AcrossthePond55 · 21/01/2023 00:33

Awww, a bad day in court then, Doofus? Toughen up asshole, I think there are more where that one came from!

Back to Kavanaugh and his sexual assault

Woah! That film looks like quite something.

I hadn't realised about the FBI's "tip line" for the Kavanaugh investigation essentially being a graveyard. More on that here:

FBI failed to fully investigate Kavanaugh allegations, say Democrats

For reasons I won't go into, I was reading Ambrose Bierce's The Devil's Dictionary yesterday and came across this:

INSURRECTION, n. An unsuccessful revolution. Disaffection's failure to substitute misrule for bad government.

Seems to me to be relevant to Trump's little attempt to prevent what he asserted was sure to be bad government (governing badly being something about which, let's face it, he was and is possibly the world's greatest expert).

AcrossthePond55 · 05/02/2023 15:53

"Disaffection's failure to substitute misrule for bad government"

That's it in a nutshell. Unfortunately there are still so many 'disaffected' out ther, and greedy bastards who take advantage of their ignorance to gain power for their own ends. Who knows how many years those of us who truly love our country are going to have to spend 'fighting' them (at the ballot box).

President Joe Biden made a surprise visit to Kyiv on Monday, arriving in Ukraine’s capital in a show of support for the war-torn nation.

I am living in the daily expectation that someone is going to be the first to indict the Fart and start the snowball rolling down that mountain.

I think it'll be awhile, if ever.

IMHO and IANAL, but I think they'll indict and try those people in his 'inner circle' first. Then if they start getting guilty verdicts they'll work to indict Doofus, knowing they have a tighter case. And they're going to want a case so airtight that it's a vacuum. They know that if they try him for anything and he's acquitted, he'll wave the 'See, I'm innocent, proof of the 'witch hunt'' banner til the cows come home. Plus, under 'double jeopardy' even if new proof comes to light or he decides to stand up in the Town Square and announce "I did it, I did it ALL!!!" (which I don't put past him), they will not be able to try him a second time.

Meanwhile Mike Lindell is apparently planning to sue Kevin McCarthy for giving Tucker Carlson, but not him or Steve Bannon, access to the security tapes from the Capitol for January 6th. He wants to see them for himself, it's his right!

My suggestion would be that they should be given to him, with a legally binding order that until he has watched them in their entirety he is not allowed to say anything more in public about anything.

There are said to be forty-four thousand hours of them. so that would keep him busy for nine or ten years, allowing that he can't be expected to watch them 24/7 because he has to sleep, eat and defecate sometimes...

That bastard is going to get away with it all, and what's more, may yet be elected President again.

DuncinToffee · 24/02/2023 19:07

I just read about that on the BBC website Shock

Is that how McCarthy bought his votes?
