The thing is, Trump was a crook before the election.
Being president for 4 years shouldn't become a lifetime Get Out of Jail Free card. It would create a perverse incentive for every Al Capone to seek office.

There are 3 trials, Texas and Conneticut that are now concluded and another one in Texas that is scheduled for later this year.
He was ordered to pay $49.3m in damages in the first Texas trial.

I'm sure a lengthy court battle will ensue. But there is definite precedent for this action.
