Thinking of you and your family, @AcrossthePond55, as well as any other worried Americans who might see this. I'm also worried for the rest of the world, truth be told, that old adage stays true, I think, the one about when America sneezes, the rest of the world catches Covid.

hesbeingabitofadick · 08/11/2022 17:46

@AcrossthePond55 Gin or whatever other stiff beverage you need.
Interestingly (or not) Joe Biden has just come up as an answer on Pointless a really bad BBC1 daily tea time quiz show 🤦‍♀️

More people identified Adele...

AcrossthePond55 · 08/11/2022 18:32

Thanks for the well wishes!

A hand hold to all my fellow Americans, at home and abroad. E Pluribus Unum and a chorus of Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land", especially the last 3 verses:

"As I went walking I saw a sign there
And on the sign it said "No Trespassing."
But on the other side it didn't say nothing,
That side was made for you and me.

In the squares of the city, in the shadow of the steeple,
By the relief office I seen my people;
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking
Is this land made for you and me?

Nobody living can ever stop me,
As I go walking that freedom highway;
Nobody living can ever make me turn back
This land was made for you and me."

Thinking of you all and wishing for the best. Holding my breath here 😮

It's a lot more even than predicted, no red wave or mid term slump.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 09/11/2022 08:46

My breath is still bated here, from what I'm seeing, aren't the Reds going to have majorities in both the House and the Senate? Or am I just being stupid?
(Sorry, I changed my name back, @DuncinToffee!)

DuncinToffee · 09/11/2022 09:02

Shouldn't that be cent et un?

Senate is too close to call at the moment.

DuncinToffee · 09/11/2022 09:27

Senate is leaning to Democratic

Democrats need to win one of two tossups Nevada and Georgia provided they win Arizona, which isn't exactly a totally sure thing given the opacity of the data and the obvious biases of various kinds of votes there

The strike through is MN formatting, not the original tweet.

Democratic challenger Adam Frisch has defeated Republican incumbent Lauren Boebert in Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District.

Trump-backed candidates generally did much worse than those who distanced from him.

You're right, but it doesn't scan properly!

(Sorry, couldn't choose between the two versions. Remembering my father, who resisted the Germans in France, and thinking how these elections are another form of resistance against Fascism.)

Thank you, I've read around it now and understand a bit more what's happening. Very sad about Beto O'Rourke and Stacey Abrams, but really pleasantly surprised about the Pennsylvania and Michigan results!

I'm just now poking my head above the ramparts, but I'm still waiting for final counts for most of the races. But from what I've seen it doesn't look like the 'red wave' they were predicting, fingers crossed. My own House District is still too close to call, but I don't think it's looking good and the GOP candidate is a ReTrumplican. We've always been a red district in a blue state, but this is going to make it that much worse. But at least we still have Gavin as our governor and 2 Dem senators. I'll wait to check the overall House results until more votes are counted.

I'm so glad that Fetterman triumphed over Oz, but that's about the only non-local result I've looked at.

DuncinToffee · 09/11/2022 14:34

Anyone for popcorn

“Trump is livid” and “screaming at everyone,” after last night’s disappointing midterm results for GOP, according to a Trump adviser. The adviser went on to slam the former president’s handpicked contenders: “they were all bad candidates.” “Candidates matter,” the adviser said.

This adviser said it’s unlikely Trump would delay his expected presidential announcement because “it’s too humiliating to delay.” But the adviser said there are too many unknowns at this point.

Midterms state of play

House

Republicans: 200 (+9)
Democrats: 174 (+5)
Outstanding races: 61
Needed for maj: 218

Senate

Democrats: 48 (+1)
Republicans: 47
Outstanding races: 5

Dems need 50 for maj
Republicans need 51

Senate control now all hangs on three states- Georgia, Nevada and Arizona.

AcrossthePond55 · 09/11/2022 19:25

@DuncinToffee

Thanks for the 'tally sheet'. My understanding is that GA 'looks like' a runoff, but I haven't checked the numbers. I'm still not digging too deep, it's too frustrating to see the fluctuating numbers.

Pass the popcorn! Or better yet, pass the apoplexy....to Doofus.

DuncinToffee · 09/11/2022 19:29

Yes, GA going to a run off has been confirmed.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 09/11/2022 19:36

Sorry, what does a run-off mean here?

InMySpareTime · 09/11/2022 19:42

If one candidate gets over 50% of the vote they win, but if there are more than two candidates you can have a situation where even the most popular candidate doesn't have over 50% of the overall votes (because a fringe candidate has say 3% of the vote and the main two have 48% and 49%).
If this happens the vote is rerun without the fringe candidate so someone gets over 50% of the votes to win.

DuncinToffee · 09/11/2022 19:43

The election was to close to call and now goes to a vote between 2 candidates only,
Warnock (D) and Warner (R)

DuncinToffee · 09/11/2022 19:49

Warnock 49.2
Warner 48.7
Oliver 2.1

% of votes

Yes, this is right, but for the sake of accuracy, it's Walker, Herschel Walker. If you're not familiar with him, google him if you want to see some seriously crazy stuff. I saw a statistic today that over 88% of the evangelical christian vote went to him and I have to say I'm floored by that.

Roussette · 09/11/2022 20:15

That man is a liar and a fraud

Let's hope Warnock wins through
