Now the republican party has to figure out what to do with this bloviating sack of narcissism and toxicity and I'm taking a ridiculous amount of pleasure watching them dance around trying to avoid reaping what they've sown.

I think they're going to spend an inordinate amount of time sniffing the air (or party members butts) before making any 'hard and fast' decision whether to keep or dump. It's all about them trying to figure out the 'danger' to the party. Will he go '3rd party' and are there enough cult members to truly split the vote or will enough current ReTrumplicans go for DiSantos instead.

Doofus isn't going to be honest like Nader and Sanders and say "I am running even if it splits the vote in the end". And even if he does say he isn't running the GOP can't count on him sticking to his word anyway. Personally, I think he just loves the attention and will be stringing everyone (including the GOP) along for as long as he can. His 'big announcement' on Tuesday (if it happens) will be that he's 'still considering it' followed by his usual mendaciousness, badmouthing, and how the midterms were stolen' since his 'chosen ones' didn't sweep the field. It's all about grabbing the media spotlight, not about serious politics. But when has he ever been serious about politics, really, right?

But 2024 is two years away. They've all got time. Personally, I'm sick of the nastiness electioneering running for two years. Hell, we don't even know what our major issues will be in 2024. I wish there was a law that said they couldn't start that stuff until late summer the year before the election.

Democrats win Nevada and retain the Senate.
Would be nice if they win Georgia as well Smile

DuncinToffee · 13/11/2022 11:08

I saw this

With Jim Marchant's defeat, it's now official that no election denier will administer the 2024 election in any swing state.

This is excellent news.

Agreed. But we'll get that when we get campaign finance reform and transparency on dark money (insert hollow laugh).

On another note, I really think that once you're a judge you need to stop going to Federalist Society events. It's a very bad look right now.

If they do, doesn't it mean that Manchin/Sinema have to explicitly vote with the repugs to stop stuff?

Well that is a good day for democracy.Brew

(And how sad and appalling that I even have to think that.)

Agree and agree!!

Or abstain, which I think is what they usually threaten to do. In a 50/50 Senate that is enough to swing the vote to the Repugs. Right now we're 50/49 with GA to be decided in December. It's one reason why GA is still so important. If we win GA then Manchin/Sinema's power will be a blunted as the count in a 51/49 senate would then be 49/49 with 2 abstain and VP Harris would be called in to break the tie.

Another election denier and Trump lover has lost, Katie Hobbs beats Kari Lake in Arizona.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 15/11/2022 17:56

Georgia is on my mind.

That loon (Lake) had flames shooting out her eyeballs at the thought of having lost. I'm waiting for her to start shouting the election was 'fraud' and 'stolen'*. We shall call it 'The Little Lie' cuz who gives a shit about her.

*I haven't turned on the news for some hours. Don't want to hear Doofus' bullshit 'announcement'. Of course, he may seize upon Putin's bombs landing in Poland to delay it. You know, 'under the circumstances, announcement not appropriate etc etc'.

AcrossthePond55 · 16/11/2022 02:33

Well, It's official. Doofus has filed his paperwork and made his announcement; he's running in 2024.

Not surprised, of course. But fuck, it had just gotten to the point where he'd been relegated to the back burner on newscasts. Now we'll be back to where every time he farts (ie opens his mouth) it'll be blasted on every channel.

Our prayers will be that he splits the party.

DH says that he's so unhinged about losing in 2020 that he's determined to burn the country down, either by destroying us using another term in office to do so, or in calling for another insurrection or for riots in the streets. I'd like to be able to pooh-pooh him, but in all honesty I can't.

AcrossthePond55 · 16/11/2022 02:36

Should read "...or in calling for another insurrection or for riots in the streets when he loses."

I haven't read the article. I simply can't. It's enough to know it's happening, not going to rub my nose in it.

Roussette · 16/11/2022 02:41

He cannot get over losing definitely. That was the biggest dent to his ego ever
I just don't understand how a twice impeached former President with a strong of pending convictions CAN stand?
What precludes standing? A prison term? A fraud conviction?

I think only being convicted of a felony legally precludes him running/being president. You would think those other things you mentioned would rule out people wanting to vote for him, but apparently not. I did see that there's a move among democrats to bar him from running based on the 14th amendment which has a section barring anyone who engages in insurrection from holding office. Doubt that will get far, however.

In addition to everything else, I'm pretty troubled by the thought of his entanglements with the Saudis, which doesn't seem to be getting much attention. That's the thing about him - there's so much criminal behaviour, sleaze and corruption no one can keep up with it all.

I heard a bit of his speech on the radio this morning, there was a very long pause for some reason.

He is just a pathetic loser who shouldn't get so much air time.

AcrossthePond55 · 16/11/2022 13:11

A felon can run. It's only certain crimes against the country that preclude it. I believe it's sedition and treason, worded as 'giving aid to an enemy'.

Even impeachment doesn't, unless a specific vote is taken to bar from ever holding ANY federal office in the future. And that includes dog catcher, not that Doofus would be competent at that job either.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 16/11/2022 14:11

His decision to stand must be mildly confusing for people who believe that he is president at the moment; presidents can only have two terms, and if he is now in the middle of his second, he can't get a third.

More to the point, if he is standing for office the Republican Party has to stop paying his legal fees. Up to now they have done so; from today they are no longer legally able to. Or so I have understood it, since his fees for lawyers cannot be defined as legitimate political expenses. He won't care about that, but they will, since they are the ones who will be fined for it.

The Jan 6 cmte has until the end of December to get their shit done. Because the first thing the GOP is going to do after being sworn in is disband it. Then the investigations into Hunter Biden, and by extension President Biden, will begin.

Yes, we have the Senate and that will help block legislation. But not enough seats to start up committees for investigations. If so, they'd already be ongoing. And a lot of Pres Biden's agenda will be dead in the water unless Schumer can get enough of them to cross the aisle.

Between this and Doofus' announcement, this has been a very tough day for many of us.

Yes, not unexpected but depressing all the same.

Two saving graces, possibly? One, I honestly think with the combination of Trump's megalomania and everyone from his daughter to the Murdoch machine turning against him with a vengeance, the Republican Party might be set to spectacularly implode. I don't see how they heal the MAGA non-MAGA divide. It was interesting to watch the R's crumble on the marriage equality act. Two, Biden is actually really surprisingly good at getting things done against the odds.

DuncinToffee · 17/11/2022 10:18

I have seen quite a few comments saying that If Republican majority figure is only a few seats that it’s practically non-existent through vacancies and special elections.

I am a bit confused how that works in reality but it seems to matter that their majority is small.
