To wonder why Princess Anne wears military uniform - when she has never served

I love the Royals, and feel very sorry for their current awful situation, so is not intended as a bash against Princess Anne or any of them

but - I do not understand why Princess Anne wears Military Uniform in the procession, never having served in the military - and Prince Harry was not able to , even though he has done two tours

I get Princess Anne has honorary titles, but 'honorary' titles but claiming this, IMO, doesn't really do justice to the men & women who have actually served - It feels like it is making a mockery if someone who has not done the same, can put the Uniform on

Because she holds honorary military ranks and roles.

BlackeyedSusan · 16/09/2022 10:16

I heard Princes Harry and Andrew did not because they are not currently working Royals. (Commentary)

I feel more sorry for Harry though in this.

TrashyPanda · 16/09/2022 10:18

only serving members of the forces can wear uniform.
Harry is no longer serving, and is being treated just like every other serviceman or woman.

why do you think he should be treated differently from them?

KatherineofGaunt · 16/09/2022 10:26

There was another thread on this and it was stated as @TrashyPanda says above; only current serving members of the armed forces are entitled to wear a uniform, or those who reached a certain rank before leaving.

Anne is wearing uniform because, like Edward, she is a current rank. Okay, honorary, but still currently that rank. Andrew and Harry are not current members of the services.

Mumoftwoinprimary · 16/09/2022 10:33

Ok - there are two questions here:-

  1. Why are they all in uniform when some of them haven’t served at all and some only served briefly a lifetime ago?
  2. Why are Harry and Andrew not in uniform when they both did serve - for 22 years in Andrew’s case?

1 is fairly simple - because they are working Royals and so have honorary military titles. Personally I don’t agree with this - but the Queen gave them these titles so you have to assume that them wearing military uniform is what she wanted. There is huge amounts of historic connection between the Royal family and the military. I do think though with King Charles it is time to change that. But I don’t think that the Queen’s funeral is the time to do it.

For Harry and Andrew they chose to stop being working royals (or in Andrew’s case he chose to behave in such a way that is incompatible with being a working royal) and part of not being a working royal is that you lose your honorary military rank. So they are the same as any other ex military. And ex military are not allowed to wear their uniform. (Unless you reach the rank of Lt Col I think. But they didn’t.)

No, that is not what I said - of course not

However if only serving members of the forces can wear uniform - Princess Anne has never served.
Other than holding honorary titles, she hasn't served previously or now

I think it is the 'honorary titles' thing that seems strange, to me

I think its ridiculous that Princess Anne wears a military uniform. Camilla also holds honorary ranks but she doesnt wear a uniform. Its bonkers.

I feel sorry for Harry too, to be honest.

I think I always have.

Princess Anne does look really great in her uniform. It suits her.

m00rfarm · 16/09/2022 10:39

You are being unreasonable in asking why. You know the answer already. You’re actually just saying you don’t think she should wear it. And I don’t agree with you on that point.

Why? It was his choice to stop being a working royal. With Andrew it wasn't his decision, but Harry is where he is of his own free will.

NiqueNique · 16/09/2022 10:41

The Monarch is the head of the armed forces.

Working Royals are given honorary roles in the armed forces to signify the link between the Royal household and the army. They wear ceremonial uniform as part of that role.

Harry did not reach the rank where it is permitted to wear uniform once service has ended. His ceremonial uniform was linked to his honorary title/role. He didn’t want to be a working Royal, so his honorary role was removed and with it, the uniform.

Then you do not understand the historic links between the army and the crown.

It also mean she can wear sensible shoes to walk 40 minutes like they did the other day. Imagine doing that in heels!

It doesn't matter what you think. The military obviously think otherwise.

This is it in a nutshell. When he “resigned” from the Royal Family, he resigned his commissions, so he can’t wear the (honorary) uniform. He’s not entitled to wear his actual old uniform, like any other ex-serviceman, because he’s no longer in the military.
