Light hearted

Do you have a memory of floating down the stairs as a child? Someone mentioned it to me earlier and I have the same memory! anyone know what I’m on about?

Yes I did, I talked about it once on a thread years ago. I probably sounded like a right loon at the time but I have lots of memories like that. I guess they are very vivid dreams. I still dream an awful lot as an adult.

ImherewithBoudica · 09/09/2022 21:00

The odd thing is I know I was wide awake. I remember sitting at the top of the stairs and feeling myself fly down very slowly. Never happened when I was asleep - it's a shame, I'd love flying dreams!

Katnissx · 09/09/2022 21:00

Mandela effect?

Pollydon · 09/09/2022 21:01

Yes!! I thought it was a half remembered dream .

poster82 · 09/09/2022 21:01

I remember very real dreams of doing this as a child, but definitely dreams! Reoccurring as a child but not something I've had as an adult. Wonder what it means?!

Isseywith3witchycats · 09/09/2022 21:02

yes but holding on to the bannister used to do it regular

No, but my older brothers used to put me head first into a sleeping bag and push me down the stairs.

My younger sister used to make herself fall down the stairs, and say I'd pushed her .

In retrospect, I was the only child in the house who used the stairs properly.

This made me laugh...I'm sorry!

LilyRosie23 · 09/09/2022 21:02

Me too, and my sister and brothers! I remember it so vividly and also remember the first time I couldn't 'fly' anymore. My mom used to say that my Grandad would also say he flew down the stairs as a child. So strange..

Missingpop · 09/09/2022 21:04

Nope but I do remember going through a phase of coming down the stairs head first on my tummy I thought it was great; I shot down the stairs really fast!!
Then my big brother suggested I try doing it feet first evil fucking idiot stood at the bottom laughing like a demented fucking hyaena on speed as I duly sped down the stairs screaming my fucking head off; I got to the bottom with blood covering my stomach; I had carpet burn from the cheap nylon carpet; I’ve never forgiven the wicked bastard.

BubbleLight · 09/09/2022 21:04

Yes! I really remember and believed it. I tried to show a friend and then it didn't work and I couldn't do it ever again!

WeDoNotTalktoPennilynLott · 09/09/2022 21:04

Yes!! I used to go up a few steps then jump and had a competition with my brother, I think I managed five stairs.
One night I had a dream I jumped off the top stair then floated to the bottom. The next morning I said to brother, "I think I can go down the whole stairs" he said Here, I'll help you, and pushed me, went tumbling down and through the glass door at the bottom, splitting my head open

Yes! Totally have the memory. Not just floating downstairs, floating in general and in specific memories. It feels funny when it comes back. There is the memory of floating, rational brain saying load of bollocks, but somehow another part of my brain that is so sure its true, it kind of overrules the rational brain.

Oooh the fact that this is shared will mean something. Would love to know.

It’s astral projection. Some think it’s a load of bollox but there’s many people who do it on a regular basis. Takes practise as an adult though. There’s a sub on Reddit where loads of people give there experiences. Also look up Robert Monroe. He’s an experienced projector and has a training institute. The CIA sent military for training there in the 60’s and 70’s so they could remote view. It worked. Apparently the consciousness of a child is so pure and not yet conditioned so they can do it easily without trying. Fascinating stuff.

hollyivysaurus · 09/09/2022 21:06

Yes I have a weird memory of this! Only in the first house we lived in; we moved just before I turned 7 and I don't have it from any of the other houses, but I do really clearly in that house.

I guess maybe I'm remembering my Mum carrying me downstairs? So odd! I'd honestly not thought about that in decades but it all came flooding back reading this post!

watingroom2 · 09/09/2022 21:07

I recall reading that 'floating down stairs' is often a memory of being carried as a child (like the brain recalling it in a dream/memory).

whatdodos · 09/09/2022 21:07

This is an eye opening thread I've never had this memory! I've fallen down the stairs many many times as a child but never floated. Wish I did though! My toddler thinks he can fly downstairs however...

Hohofortherobbers · 09/09/2022 21:08

Definitely did not have this dream, rode my duvet down the stairs once in the 80s and broke the BT rental phone handset, got in so much trouble for that.
If it's a memory of being carried by parents I expect my own dd will have vivid dreams of floating down the stairs.... Then back up.... Then back down.... Then back up... Etc Grin

Yes, far more likely to be astral projection than a dream of course.

Woolandwonder · 09/09/2022 21:09

I have a 'memory' of flying from the top to the bottom. So strange to find its so common!

SummerWinterSummerWinter · 09/09/2022 21:10

There was a particular way in our house of holding onto the bannister each side and somehow sliding down on your hands so your feet floated all the way to the bottom! So yes :)

Cheesybreadnom · 09/09/2022 21:12

I used to dream about floating down the stairs as a child!

DillDanding · 09/09/2022 21:12

yes! I used to dream this often as a child. In my dream, my dressing gown hanging my bedroom door, would come to life and show me how to do it.

poster82 · 09/09/2022 21:13

yes but holding on to the bannister used to do it regular

Yes like that thing where you put your arms forwards on the railings to swing yourself forward to skip the steps, but I'd dream that I could do that to a whole flight of stairs.

ThunderstomsAreComing · 09/09/2022 21:14

YES! I thought it was just me. Our stairs were really narrow (terraced house) so I twisted while I floated so I didn't bump my head. Really vivid dreams of it.

RiftGibbon · 09/09/2022 21:14

There was a discussion about this some time ago.
One theory was, I think 'exploding head' syndrome. Another was the feel/memory of being carried up and down stairs by an adult as a baby.

PenguinMan · 09/09/2022 21:15

OMG!! I think about this all of the time!!

I can’t believe it’s so common!!

I vividly remember standing at the top and launching myself off on multiple occasions and floating down to the bottom and I’ve always wondered how I did it.

I don’t know if I feel sad or happy that I’ve found out it’s a common dream.
As it’s put an end to the mystery but also taken away the magic.

I used to crawl down on my front or slide down in sleeping bags and have the scars to prove it, so I’m not sure how I floated with such elegance.
