Fish head for dinner

Myleftbigtoe · 04/09/2022 19:34

Saw this for sale in Morrisons yesterday. Still can't decide if serving up my family fish heads is gross or knowing that we should be eating more sustainably this is a great way of reducing food waste.

YABU - sustainable and a very cheap, good quality form of protein. Lots of lovely fish head recipes online.
YANBU - the eyes, salmon tongue... brains🤢

Is it much more different to eating octopus? I have a friend who loves grilled baby octopus spaghetti.

Have I missed something? What is the similarity between fish heads and octopus? 🙄

IHeartGeneHunt · 19/11/2022 19:28

You eat the whole baby octopus, head included.

40p is excellent - that would keep my cat going for a couple of days!

Like pp I presume it’s for stock or pets - well done Morrison’s, we waste far too much good food in this country.

Anyone know if you can feed them to dogs? I’m new to this dog owning malarkey.

You can, but I would recommend ensuring its de-scaled first as those often put a dog off or make them gag.

Feed outside, and don't be surprised if your dog wants to roll in it or muck about with it, particularly if they're not used to whole raw foods (mine are and will still do this with fish).

It might also come back later, some dogs change their minds on whole raw fish after a while, some bring it up to have another crack at it - don't panic if that happens, dogs are well designed to vomit and consume again, it is not an immediate sign of a problem (they can use their stomachs like a handy pocket to carry stuff!).

You don't put the head in stock it would be bitter and discoloured

You really do...

It's how mum made Christmas fish soup...

You most definitely do.

Intrigued by the eyes being one of the best bits?
What do they taste like?

Don't think I'd have a problem with eating sautéed or crispy fried insects (full of protein) but I think I draw the line at this Cambodian delicacy

But then again it comes from the Pol Pot dictatorship era when millions were starving & you ate what was available.

As @IHeartGeneHunt said, you eat the entire thing, head and all. No parts are removed beforehand, they're pretty similar to fish yet there usually isn't such a squeamish reaction to eating their heads.

I now also want to re-watch Ashes To Ashes!

Mouthfulofquiz · 19/11/2022 20:18

Presumably you should add a trigger warning for arachnophiles too?

(they can use their stomachs like a handy pocket to carry stuff!).

I've a theory that a major turning point in human evolution was when homo whateveritwas first invented the bag.

ALongHardWinter · 20/11/2022 00:19

Maybe it's for cats?

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 20/11/2022 03:45

@ErrolTheDragon yes you're right don't look at my link if you love spiders!
Personally I was a bit 🫢 those poor poor furry cuties.
Though I always think that tarantulas look like dazed kittens but with eight legs instead of four & a tail 🤷‍♀️
