Fish head for dinner

Myleftbigtoe · 04/09/2022 19:34

Saw this for sale in Morrisons yesterday. Still can't decide if serving up my family fish heads is gross or knowing that we should be eating more sustainably this is a great way of reducing food waste.

YABU - sustainable and a very cheap, good quality form of protein. Lots of lovely fish head recipes online.
YANBU - the eyes, salmon tongue... brains🤢

I agree, it's for stick. They also sell bones which I use for stock too (I'm not veggie but don't always eat meat)

CeeceeBloomingdale · 04/09/2022 19:50

*stock ffs not stick

RaininSummer · 04/09/2022 19:52

Surely not disgusting at all. I wouldn't fancy it but I'm vegetarian. Using the whole creature makes ethical and environmental sense

Those who are saying for cats, what do you do? Simmer them and flake them up? At 40p it seems good value for my small cat.

maddiemookins16mum · 04/09/2022 19:59

We have two in the freezer for when DH does a ‘posh’ risotto and faffs around/shows off making stock.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 04/09/2022 19:59

Those saying it's for dogs clearly don't have one like mine. She'd spend a few minutes frolicking around it in the garden, like a pagan offering, and then I'd be finding it jammed between the sofa cushions a few weeks later.

Suzi888 · 04/09/2022 19:59

If you eat sausages…. 🤣

For making fish stock?

That is what I would assume.

SirChenjins · 04/09/2022 20:01

Like pp I presume it’s for stock or pets - well done Morrison’s, we waste far too much good food in this country.

Anyone know if you can feed them to dogs? I’m new to this dog owning malarkey.

Oh god my dog goes insane for fish, he comes pelting through the house if I even open a tin of tuna 😆 he thinks getting the drained juice on his dinner is the best treat ever!

Reminds me of the fish heads my mum would make.
A song came out about them in 1980

Makes me want to vom but my mum used to cook fish head for my cat when I lived at home. The eyes would pop 🤢🤢🤢

MomwasCasual · 04/09/2022 20:11

They make fish head curry on Aussie Masterchef often!

girlmom21 · 04/09/2022 20:13

Morrisons are very good at making sure fish and meat doesn't go to waste

Adversity · 04/09/2022 20:14

Cantonese fish head congee, had it a few times. It’s very nice.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 04/09/2022 20:17

I'd mount it on a small plaque and hang on the wall.
(Might have to spray it with Zoflora each week)

BeetBeats · 04/09/2022 20:19

For stock
For pets
They’re also quite a delicacy in South East Asia and eaten several different ways.

if you eat sausages and other processed meats you might want to have a rethink about what makes you feel sick….

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 04/09/2022 20:21

While travelling in china 20 years ago we had hotpot, which I wasn't overly keen on and when a fish head slowly rose to the surface and looked at me I gave up.

Though it's not for me - I think it's fab they sell these and have a market for them. As someone else said cheek is the best but if a fish (if you like fish which I don't)

CornedBeef451 · 04/09/2022 20:22

Cod cheeks are a delicacy!

There's a fair bit of flesh on a fish head if you know which bits you can eat and then I guess the rest for stock?

buttons123456 · 04/09/2022 20:25

Might be saving the head but there is a lot of packaging there which sort of defeats the object ! 🙄

Fififelix · 04/09/2022 20:27

I wonder if you live in a multi cultural area. My MIL from Singapore regularly makes fish head curry with her friends..

For making fish head soup 🍜

Just hope goat's head doesn't catch on (other then on vinyl)

lurchermummy · 04/09/2022 20:29

Popular dinner in SE Asia. Also good for stock,
