Fish head for dinner

Myleftbigtoe · 04/09/2022 19:34

Saw this for sale in Morrisons yesterday. Still can't decide if serving up my family fish heads is gross or knowing that we should be eating more sustainably this is a great way of reducing food waste.

YABU - sustainable and a very cheap, good quality form of protein. Lots of lovely fish head recipes online.
YANBU - the eyes, salmon tongue... brains🤢

I buy them for my cat!

Do you cook them?

Hannakl · 04/09/2022 20:41

Fish head porridge is a very common dish in Singapore. Not the Quaker Oats kind of porridge though.

ZuzuSusu · 04/09/2022 20:50

On "Old enough" one of the families made a broth for udon using fish heads, which intrigued me, I think I'll try it!

LionessesRules · 04/09/2022 20:52

DH was very excited to see these for sale when he ventured into Morrisons, for maybe the first time in his life.
He would have bought them if he had a cool bag.
The only problem is him and the kids fight over who IS going to eat the eyes Envy
I'm having toast that night!

LionessesRules · 04/09/2022 20:55

Sorry, recipes..
Steam with ginger and garlic, then use your chopsticks to pick off the bits of meat you can find. Cheeks, the top of the head, and previously mentioned eyes are the prized bits.....

sageandbasil · 04/09/2022 20:56

The head is the best part of a fish it's delicious

DelilahBucket · 04/09/2022 21:04

We get the whole salmon from Morrisons, fillet and scale it and freeze it in portions. We use the head and tail for stock. Make a big batch and then freeze it in portions. I made an amazing laksa with some of that stock this week and while heating the stock I put an extra salmon head in that I had in the freezer. I took the edible meat from it and included it in the laksa. It tasted so good, the best laksa I've ever made!

If you want to get people to eat something awful (that could be spelt offal) call it a delicacy. Theyll fall over each other to get to it - it's bit like the King's new clothes!

N0RKS · 04/09/2022 21:11

The cheeks are worth the 40p on their own

Proudboomer · 04/09/2022 21:13

I want supermarkets to go back to putting the little bag of giblets inside a whole chicken. Don’t know what they do with them now but we’re great for making chicken stock.

bowchicawowwow · 04/09/2022 21:17

@JesusInTheCabbageVan My dog is exactly the same, anything high value like that cannot be eaten immediately and needs to be festered (the side of the sofa is a prime place for this process to take place) a bit longer to enhance the flavour.

Morrisons is very popular with people who feed their pets raw food. I've bought pigs trotters, bones and tripe in there before. I think 'nose to tail' consumption is the way ahead. If you go in pet shops, you can buy dried pigs snouts, hairy cows ears and pizzle (aka penis).

Vampirethriller · 04/09/2022 21:24

I make salmon head soup. Never seen them in a supermarket though.

Manekinek0 · 04/09/2022 21:26

Salmon head and chilli soup is amazing.

ODFOx · 04/09/2022 21:29

There's enough meat there for fish cakes, and then simmer with some celery and/or fennel for a stock which will really enrich a seafood risotto. 40p! What's not to like if you have the time?

Grim.

TaffyandTeenyTaffy · 04/09/2022 21:32

Maybe the fish head will be the Mumsnet Chicken of 2023.... Grin

Dibbydoos · 04/09/2022 21:43

Fish heads are def for fish stock or pet food.

But here's a funny tale....

I'm half Chinese and whenever fish was served up at weddings etc, I remember the Chinese fighting over fish eyes - it was in good humour byt a real chop stick fight and as a child it intrigued me but I never wanted to eat one!

Roll on years, my DCs are 5 and 6. My DH Cooks a whole salmon and they're fighting over eating who's going to eat the fish eye 😬. They've never been to a Chinese wedding and seen this.... Anyway, they both got one as it was a full fish! They both still eat fish eyes 🤢 So maybe I should try roasting one 🤣🤣🤣

And we will be eating insects in future, I've seen the research ongoing at Derby Uni. Who knew insects smell? A room full of them and they def do smell horrible... I think I'd be veggie before purposefullly eating insects!

Popular in the western isles of Scotland, cooked stuffed with out meal.

Similar recipe that my gran used to make - always found the eyes a bit off-putting though!

I buy them for my kids to use as bait when we go crabbing- we always catch loads more than the people using bacon etc. Currently have one in the freezer for next time we go!

For making fish stock?

Surely it’s this, for making stock

Absolutely. Why did they stop doing this?

adamanti · 05/09/2022 06:27

My nanny is from the phillipines and thinks our sterile deboned headless fish are hilarious. She also prefers chicken pieces to breast and boils the feet with the livers. One person's yuck is another person's banquet.

faw2009 · 05/09/2022 07:03

Fish Cheeks are delicious.

My Asian story. A relative of mine was having a bit of an affair with a family friend. My grandma didn't really approve but hey ho. During a dinner she gave him the fish head, spine and tail in one piece (I.e. After all the body flesh had been scraped off) basically meaning you better finish what you start and take the relationship seriously.

LovelyDaaling · 05/09/2022 07:53

Look at the price of it, 40p😱😱😱 and you have to cost in the price of the electricity to boil it up. I'll stick to stock cubes.
