Fish head for dinner

Myleftbigtoe · 04/09/2022 19:34

Saw this for sale in Morrisons yesterday. Still can't decide if serving up my family fish heads is gross or knowing that we should be eating more sustainably this is a great way of reducing food waste.

YABU - sustainable and a very cheap, good quality form of protein. Lots of lovely fish head recipes online.
YANBU - the eyes, salmon tongue... brains🤢

I was 22 (years, not stones) 🙃

NosyNeighbour22 · 19/11/2022 14:56

My 4 year old spotted these in Morrisons and he was very disappointed that I wouldn’t buy them! I’m not sure if he wanted to eat them or play with them though!

Just hope goat's head doesn't catch on (other then on vinyl)

Goat and Sheep heads are on sale in all the Turkish shops/Halal butchers round here. It's also where all the local Science Technicians source eyeballs and hearts for Biology classes.

Oh that takes me back. Travelling home on the bus through Brixton and seeing a goat's head in the butcher's window. Just the head. Spent the rest of the journey wondering 'did I really just see that?'

It was Brixton, so I probably did.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 19/11/2022 15:05

Morrison's is the best supermarket for offal and the more unusual cuts of meat that used to be easily available from butchers like ox tail, lambs hearts and pig's trotters

'Looks for nearest Morrisons.'

EcoCustard · 19/11/2022 15:05

i buy these for my dogs as a treat 🙈

Alacarde · 19/11/2022 15:07

I leave the heads on if I do a whole baked fish and I eat any bits that are edible so I see nothing wrong with that at all. I'd eat it without a thought, or it could be used to make fish stock (if you were a diligent enough cook to make your own!).

ThreeblackCats · 19/11/2022 15:07

So you don’t like it op, so in your opinion @Myleftbigtoe so it should be banned?

People like, stock, soup, broth for stews etc…

Sorry but.., DFOD.

Bubblebubblebah · 19/11/2022 15:11

It is kind of sad how these threads often show many people just being totally disconnected from where some food comes from and what actually is waste and what is just simply normal, edible part of animal.

Also. Collagen, people😉 While some people soend tons of supplments and cream, many of us buy ligaments, bones, heads, feet etc and have not only collagen rich food, but food. And tasty one for that matter 😁

The op didn't say it should be banned.

It's a good idea, for all the uses mentioned already. Our local farm shop/butchery always has a trolley of bags each containing several big beef bones by the exit to take for free, labelled 'for stock or dogs' - absolute win-win. Less waste, minimal packaging and happy dogs.

Alacarde · 19/11/2022 15:14

I don't see why eating the head of a fish is any different from eating any other part of its body.

Arrivederla · 19/11/2022 15:38

Exactly this.

And the squeamishness around slightly more unusual foods. 🙄

That is truly disgusting. I mean who could eat that? But you are right we have become way to wasteful in our society. If you eat meat maybe you need to be more open? I wouldn’t eat that in a million years but I don’t eat meat.

There's always one. Millions of people would eat that. Bit foreign for you?

Fivecluckyhens · 19/11/2022 15:47

This is brilliant. Thanks for the heads up OP. I’m going to get some if my local store sells them. My hens are moulting and the protein will do them great.

ButterflyLeg · 19/11/2022 15:50

There was this butcher I knew who's favourite part of a fish to eat was it's eyes.

That's all I have to contribute to this thread.

Goat head is used to make soup in Jamaica and other Caribbean islands gracefoods.com/recipe-a-z/recipe/1822-mannish-water.

Very tasty!!

I occasionally buy them for stock. When I had a cat I bought them more often

Snugglemonkey · 19/11/2022 19:02

Floydthebarber · 04/09/2022 19:56

Those who are saying for cats, what do you do? Simmer them and flake them up? At 40p it seems good value for my small cat.

Yes. I strained out all the bitsthen picked out the flakes, eyes etc. The cheeks are wee chunks of meat. I did not go hoking for brain, but the one time I was silly enough to give it to my cat whole, there was carnage. Bits of stuff flying as it was wrestled with and too much mess. Only did that once!

SheWoreARaspberryBeret123 · 19/11/2022 19:03

Stock

Loics · 19/11/2022 19:08

Is it much more different to eating octopus? I have a friend who loves grilled baby octopus spaghetti.

RunLolaRun102 · 19/11/2022 19:08

You get these where there are large South Asian, East Asian and African populations. Fish head currys are incredibly popular

TheHateIsNotGood · 19/11/2022 19:11

They're only 40p! For all the uses PPs have said - stock, pet food, etc - a bargain; you're pretty much only paying for the packaging and staff time. Much better than being discarded into the bin.

Now a savvy shopper/cook might let them know that they'll take a few in a bag for 20p each.

Im vegan- but Jesus Christ use ALL of the animal. In years to come you’ll have to! Suck it up.

Goldie Hawn looks amazing and she boils up chicken feet etc- there’s an insta post of her doing this in her kitchen- swears by the collagen. But god it looks awful!
