To ask what you think the new PM will do about the energy crisis in the coming weeks

Genuinely have no idea. Does anyone think the cap may be frozen/avoided for October? Or grants issued for those on benefits? I can't see a viable option ATM which doesn't miss large chunks of people out who are also struggling or just delaying (additional) national debt.

Briefing for Truss:
Remove green levies - will make v little difference to bills as small % of cost and not increasing, bad idea
Reduce VAT by 5% across the board - this would reduce bills by up to 5% (VAT is currently 5% on energy bills)
Increase ability to provide own U.K. energy - would impact in medium to long term
Possibly some help to those on benefits

If anything it will be for the future generations to pay for further down the road. And be aimed at those that vote.

I think we are going to see a financially vulnerable tariff, if not now-in time for the next review. A tiered tariff wouldnt be a bad shout either.

I would like to see something done on the standing charge, VAT and more long term, sustainable solutions.

Honestly? Fuck all.
They'll just find other ways to screw us over, trash the environment, hike the cost of whatever they can for profit and tell us we're all lazy.

They've been avoiding the subject so it doesn't sound as though they want to do anything.

Reduce VAT across the board? Where would all the money come from to replace all that lost revenue?

I think the problem with the financially vulnerable tiered tariff is that they will still miss thousands of people out. We're one of those families which sits above the threshold for any help atm. Helping those on benefits is great but there's a huge chunk in the middle which are being overlooked.

They could do a mortgage holiday like they did during the pandemic

You still owe the money but it did not effect your credit rating

The money you "save" goes towards heating bills (owe more longterm as intrest)

Not sure about renters though,

I think the idea of reduced VAT was what Truss has been leading with for a while. I can't see how it really helps anyone in the long run 🤷🏼

They need to take the huge profits away from the energy companies and use this to freeze prices at their current rates. They won’t though.

Yes I agree and I think they need to be separate entities-

1. Financially Vulnerable tariff-means tested for the lowest incomes

2. Tiered tariff-up to a certain amount of usage at a lower rate per kWh, increasing to price cap over a certain usage-Not means tested, for everyone

Not cheering truss on in the slightest but if prices are up say 15% then surely vat received is increased naturally so a reduction in vat might end up at same amount in coffers as pre inflation ?

Truss and Kuenssberg make me feel physically ill but I'll give it a go.

A windfall tax has already been levied, this is what has paid for the money we're getting back this autumn.

How much would be needed to make a real difference? A tax of a few billion only gives each household a modest amount.

It'll be something really minor. Like those right at the bottom financially will get like £100 then prior to the next election it will all be hammering in how we need to pay back all the money spent to get through the energy crisis so must vote tory to pay for it 🙄🙄

They'll spend the winter flailing around trying to distract us and turn us on each other, just to get to spring. They don't actually care if people die or starve. They just want to stay in power.

I WISH just one of them would sincerely acknowledge how unbelievably difficult the past few weeks/months have been watching the news (which may be 50% Scaremongering who knows really) and seeing NOTHING remotely helpful come from the government.
