Genuinely have no idea. Does anyone think the cap may be frozen/avoided for October? Or grants issued for those on benefits? I can't see a viable option ATM which doesn't miss large chunks of people out who are also struggling or just delaying (additional) national debt.

I don't know if it was Chanel 4 or sky tonight but someone said that Germany has just handed out some package and this lady said it was fhe way to go.

Obviously an incredibly vague post however, I wonder if anyone knows what the German package is?

This lady also discredited the idea that truss would let wealth trickle down by giving the wealthy tax cuts eg national insurance as absolutely untenable

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told journalists Germany would get through the winter, adding that Russia was "no longer a reliable energy partner".
He said the government would make one-off payments to pensioners, people on benefits and students. There would also be caps on energy bills.
Some 9,000 energy-intensive businesses would receive tax breaks to the tune of €1.7bn.
A windfall tax on energy company profits would also be used to mitigate bills, Mr Scholz said.

Go back in time and stop Cameron/Pickles from cutting the green crap?

We need to be more energy efficient. So bring back insulation grants. Stop people objecting to low energy requirements on products. Bring back requirements on new builds for energy efficiency, energy generation, car charging. Enable and encourage community car sharing.

Put planning back in to allow onshore wind.

Put proper support for renewables, hydrogen and smart grid.

All of which has years lead in time. If the Tories hadn't dropped it all we would be in a much better position now.

What can they do now? I don't know. More windfall tax? Practical advice and help for people to become more energy efficient? We bought our house 10 years ago and use 1/3 the energy now.

This situation is potentially devastating.

The tories will do nothing useful.

We, like millions of others can’t afford to pay our bills this winter. My dh and I both work hard, and now feel like the rug has been pulled from under us. The amount our energy will cost is so huge, that it’s not possible for us to make a plan to get through this.

I’m really scared.

The tories are useless. They don’t live in the real world.

The last weeks have been all about who will have the power. They’ve kept us hanging like a load of fucking idiots. They don’t give a shit about us.

Their kids won’t be cold and hungry this winter. You can bet your life on that!

I just took the most notice of Rishi Sunak saying blatantly we can't help everyone.
We will help the poorest.

Yes… that’s what Rishi said.

and Liz totally disagrees.

this has been the defining issue of the campaign…

EverydayIsPJday · 04/09/2022 22:08

I agree that whilst campaigning Rishi was saying he was intending to very much target those on benefits (he said it was the simplest solution I believe) whereas Truss has said she would do more general schemes that will impact more people but I just fail to understand how/what that is and what the future implications are. Its no use offering a small (5%) discount if then on top of that there are wider financial ramifications which mean we are in this mess for longer or our children suffer in the future as a result.
