Genuinely have no idea. Does anyone think the cap may be frozen/avoided for October? Or grants issued for those on benefits? I can't see a viable option ATM which doesn't miss large chunks of people out who are also struggling or just delaying (additional) national debt.

Take action against the companies making billions of £s in profit from an essential utility?

I do appreciate that the vulnerable are going to struggle but people on benefits already get support and frankly it would be nice if those of us stupid enough to work for a living actually got a break too. I've already had to put £500 on my Dad's electricity account as he was worrying himself sick about it so I get to pay twice in effect. Where's my handout from the Government?

lomoko · 04/09/2022 09:30

Nothing. There's noone at the wheel.

Yousee · 04/09/2022 09:31

What I'd like to know is what they are going to do about all the small and medium businesses which are about to go under as they literally cannot afford to turn on the lights?
Bearing in mind that numbers bigger than I can quite comprehend have just been spent getting them through the pandemic, are the government really going to just allow them to go and take their jobs and taxes with them?

EmptyGlassHalf · 04/09/2022 09:31

I think they might extend Boris’ advice to buy a new kettle out to other appliances.

SpindleInTheWind · 04/09/2022 09:34

Truss talked about a mystery 'package' on BBC just now. No details.

WTF is Joe Lycett on, clapping and whooping away for her? I thought he was sane. (He's on the panel.) Or is he trolling? 'I'm incredibly right wing'. Weird.

pointythings · 04/09/2022 09:41

It'll be Thick Lizzie and she will do nothing that doesn't benefit people who are already wealthy. Tories gonna Tory.

Yep. She will probably give everyone 5p off their bills and expect us all to be grateful.

Whatthetrolley · 04/09/2022 09:47

Not watching but have seen Joe Lycett live. He's definitely not right wing but he's amazing at trolling when necessary!

VanishingViolet · 04/09/2022 09:50

I hope to god the new prime minister doesn’t address the nation, Covid style, with a new tag line!

If they don’t do enough I imagine there will be protests in London, that could become violent like the Poll Tax riots!

Simonjt · 04/09/2022 09:53

Most likely fuck all, they’ll probably be quite happy with a less state pensions to pay for.

Booklover3 · 04/09/2022 09:54

It’s just a bizarre new world… not surprised by much anymore since Covid!

DistrictCommissioner · 04/09/2022 09:56

They are going to have to do something, surely?? Schools, businesses etc are going to go to the wall, let alone householders.

I think the problem with the financially vulnerable tiered tariff is that they will still miss thousands of people out. We're one of those families which sits above the threshold for any help atm. Helping those on benefits is great but there's a huge chunk in the middle which are being overlooked.

Yeah agree with this. We sit just above the threshold for any help so are fairly low income but still have to pay all our bills.

EverydayIsPJday · 04/09/2022 10:02

I literally can't get my head around just applying help to the benefits system (which is what Rishi suggested was the straight forward approach). I feel I may as well pack in my job tbh (I won't). It's making me feel very bitter which is not where I want to be as I know there are people so much worse off than me, I just feel I am months away from being in big trouble but according to the government, would need to suck it up - and I can't.

This crisis is worse than the pandemic I think
At least the scientists could look at data and past history of pandemics to determine the best way to deal with it , a kind of a plan of sorts.
With this it's all to do with different forces ; the war , Putin stopping people getting the gas they need , the green agenda, trying to save the planet. Massive things that affect our way of life and changing from a capitalist society to one that will be so different to what we know now
We need to be prepared and I don't think any of us are and our leaders are mostly pretty uninspiring too ; they need to lay it out fir us clearly and get us on board. That won't be easy
Maybe we will lean towards a 'universal credit system ' where we will be told what we can do or have and how much we can live on.
I can really see that coming in

100problems · 04/09/2022 10:03

Both candidates are toothless and spineless whether dealing with energy CEO's or Putin. They are puny.

The Big Reveal plan when one of them finally limps over the line will be execrably conceived and have all the impact of a lettuce sandwich.

They will rely on regular men and women to repeat the Poll tax protests to enable any kind of negotiating clout. This will result in a derisory rebate that won't make a dent of difference to either consumers nor shareholders.

the80sweregreat · 04/09/2022 10:08

Those above the threshold for any help will turn their anger and frustration on those that will be eligible for help etc.
It's going to be so horrible I think

Zebedee55 · 04/09/2022 10:11

Sunak would have probably given out grants etc.

Truss will fiddle about at the edges, achieving little for most. A little tax cut here, a drop in corporation tax etc.

She seems to think the public just "being positive" about life will help...🙄

Nobetterthansheoughttobe · 04/09/2022 10:14

Well Truss wants to bin speed limits on motorways, so that will be great for the environment (being sarky here!)
She also wants to bring in fracking - hardly likely to solve anything
The fact she won't flesh out her 'plan' means she is waiting for the work experience lad at number 10 to write something for her

Willyoujustbequiet · 04/09/2022 10:27

@Badger1970

Most people on UC work so stop pedalling that old cliche.

As for others, a single person with no kids can get under £400 a month. With the new bills projected at hundreds monthly people in this position will literally starve or freeze to death.

Yes it's very tough for middle incomes but the reason the lowest income need it most is that they are going to die. Its sickening that anyone would resent helping these people as an absolute priority.

the80sweregreat · 04/09/2022 10:30

What's to be positive about really ?
A lot of very young people I know don't bother to find a job as what's the point?
That's not a great attitude, but I can't blame them to be honest. These kids had parents that worked hard too. It's scary how this is creeping in to a few families that I know and it's not good at all for anyone

EverydayIsPJday · 04/09/2022 10:31

I'm not sure anyone is saying people on lower incomes shouldn't get help but ONLY helping those on benefits is extremely short sighted IMO. Earning a few hundred quid over the threshold does not account for the thousands of pounds were ALL expected to pay.

This in spades. It's already happening on local Facebook pages and, tbh, I completely understand why. If they just help the UC people and nor everybody across the board, including small businesses then society will run on them I think.

I am hopeful they will do something to the unit cost for everyone, as it's the 'squeezed middle' they will be relying on to vote for them at the GE which can't be far away.

5128gap · 04/09/2022 10:36

Big song and dance about the pitiful little grants, phrased in terms of the amount 'they' are giving rather than the amount people will actually receive.
Some blah blah about helping small businesses.
Most of the actual help targeted to pensioners (whether they need it or not) and further song and dance made about this.
Some patronising yada yada about thermostats and jumpers.
Pep talk about people worse off.

the80sweregreat · 04/09/2022 10:44

The speed limit thing is bizarre
I hope that someone talks her down on this one
Ridiculous !
As for the energy , who knows ?
I think it'll be ' here's a few tax cuts' get on with it
Phillip Hammond was on Sky today and he thinks it's all bonkers, but he didn't say this out loud of course.
