To give my 18 month old Macdonalds?

Benji4ever · 20/08/2022 11:42

Twice a month I take my two DS swimming all afternoon. On way home we get a drive through Macdonalds

The 3 year old has a happy meal. The 18 month old has a few of the chips. That's it.

I saw a mum give me one of those looks as I took some chips from the happy meal and gave them to the little one.

Is this awful? Its only twice a month and only a few chips. Also the 18 month old drink diluted squash regularly.

Aibu to think in the grand scheme of things its not that bad?

I hate McDonalds. Disgusting place. We live near a farm, where they have separated the calves from their mothers because of a shortage of feed (due to the hot summer). They moaned and howled for their mothers all night and all morning. And I mean non-stop.I loathe McDonalds and the entire meat industry.

Sad

Um, I don’t think that has anything to do with McDonald’s. That’s the dairy industry and is a common practice the world over. Yes it’s very cruel and I have heard it too when I lived near a farm. But not sure how it’s relevant to this thread?

Sadly @LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL it is true but it’s hardly the fault of McDonalds. I suspect that poster is a militant vegan.

I'm sure op doesn't need you to tell her what fucking a axis she should pack!

What's 'a axis'? I was simply giving OP healthier suggestions.

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL · 21/08/2022 07:13

@Yerroblemom1923 is that what OP asked for?

No, so why give unsolicited advice?

Like, I've got a much better idea that you will just never have thought of. I'm such a better parent.

DaisyJoy1 · 21/08/2022 07:25

It's not great. Especially not the squash. The squash is worse than the fries.

FrodisCapering · 21/08/2022 07:28

I have a three year old and a two year old. They've never had McDonald's in their lives and I hope this continues for as long as possible. It's full of fat, salt and sugar. They drink water, never juice.
Those are my choices for my kids though. You do whatever you want.

Yummymummy2020 · 21/08/2022 07:28

I don’t see an issue with it at all. Of course if it was every day that’s clearly too much but I’m pretty sure a lot of eighties kids got the odd Mc Donald’s on a special occasion and most are absolutely fine now(going on my own personal experiences). Like everything, I think moderation is key. You are going to get judged no matter what you do!

“I’m a better parent than you. Sucks for you” is what the last sentence meant 🤣

Good luck when they’re school age and going crazy shovelling crap at school and at parties because they’re deprived that kind of enjoyment at home.

See attached images from McDonald’s website.

A 4-piece chicken nugget from McDonald’s has 174kcal, 8.7 grams of fat which is 12% of an ADULT’S daily entire daily need, and 0.38g of salt, which is 6% of an adult’s daily entire need.

A small Happy Meal chips has 237 kcal, 12.1 grams of fat so now a whopping 17% of a full size adult’s daily diet, and 0.44g of salt so now 7%.

So maybe quadruple those percentages for an 18 month old? I don’t know how many chips you’re giving your child; you say a few, but then you say his older brother doesn’t eat any because the younger has them. If the 18 month old is eating them all, no, it’s not good. If he has four chips, yes, it’s probably fine.

And yes, the fries are more atrocious. Of the two, I guess you’d be better off giving him nuggets.

But this is like one of those doctors’ appointments where you discuss something of less import and then in the last 30 seconds mention there’s blood in your wee. Giving both your children diluted squash several times a day is much worse than McDonald’s twice a month. Can you afford the dental work that’s going to cause? If not, stop the squash tomorrow and every time they have a meltdown, look at prices for dental work on your phone. I know it won’t stop the meltdowns, but it will help you stay strong. Not to mention the trauma for them of going through extensive, avoidable dental work. When they’re absolutely screaming the house down in a dentist’s chair, as so many children under the age of 10 do, they won’t be saying, “Oh yes, this is worth it because I so enjoy squash.”

Children's dentistry is free in the UK. Not the point obviously. Dental health is mainly determined by genetics so as long as you brush their teeth and keep sugary stuff to 2 or 3 times a day, that will be fine for most children.

Yeah I've had this they've never had this or that at parties, always the ones grabbing everything and so greedy.

I taught mine that a little bit of everything is ok.

It may be free but its bloody hard to get access to!

Lostmyway86 · 21/08/2022 07:41

It's absolutely fine OP. Both mine drink squash and have done since about 12 months. Brush their teeth twice a day as normal and a recent dentist visit was told their teeth in perfect condition. Seriously don't stress. They fact you've taken them swimming is the thing that should be focused on here, a fantastic experience and important skill to learn.

Idontwanttoffs · 21/08/2022 07:47

@LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL - I doubt that's fabricated. It's common knowledge that happens and you could easily support the claim by a Google search. I eat some meat (not dairy) even though I know that it's barbaric nowadays

I'm not interested to n googling, but thanks for the advice. I'm aware of search engines, been around ages.

Lostmyway86 · 21/08/2022 08:02

Also the fact that another 'mum' gave you a look means she was also in Mcdonalds giving her children the food, so who is she to judge! My children are the same age as yours and I think people forget how brutally exhausting the whole thing is. Sounds to me like you're doing fab. I'm off now to make my babies some diluted squash, before I spend the entire day firefighting! Sending solidarity!

Dozycuntlaters · 21/08/2022 08:11

The chips and the squash is fine ! My DS hates water, would only drink squash. He's now a strapping 20 year old, with nice teeth! I hate water too, my teeth are also fine.

Perfect28 · 21/08/2022 08:15

I think the very occasional McDonald's is absolutely fine. We do chunks of burger meat, cucumber sticks, chips. The squash is a no though. Why not water?

whiteroseredrose · 21/08/2022 08:45

Someone up thread said that small children never need to have a McDonalds which is true. Mine never did because it's not a place I'd want to eat myself so we just wouldn't go there.

However mine did have crisps from the leisure centre vending machine after swimming. They also had (occasional, organic, no sweetener) squash.

Each to their own. Mine (22 and 19) are a healthy weight and exercise regularly so fingers crossed. Neither eat fast food and choose water over pop.

The only thing that stood out for me was that the happy meal was as well as dinner, not dinner itself. That is pretty calorific for a snack.

YDBear · 21/08/2022 18:04

Don’t give a damn. The world is full of judgemental know-it-all arseholes.

Same1977 · 21/08/2022 18:12

Once in a while macdonalds isn't the worst thing.People give ham sandwiches to kids daily and that's heavily processed meat

VacayingInTheHamptons · 21/08/2022 18:17

SnackSizeRaisin · 21/08/2022 07:38

That's not the meat industry it's the dairy industry.

McDonald’s does use a fair bit of milk and cheese. Cheese on burgers, milkshakes and other drinks. There’s also been numerous issues with cruelty at farms that supply McDonald’s. Farming animals causes suffering.
