To give my 18 month old Macdonalds?

Benji4ever · 20/08/2022 11:42

Twice a month I take my two DS swimming all afternoon. On way home we get a drive through Macdonalds

The 3 year old has a happy meal. The 18 month old has a few of the chips. That's it.

I saw a mum give me one of those looks as I took some chips from the happy meal and gave them to the little one.

Is this awful? Its only twice a month and only a few chips. Also the 18 month old drink diluted squash regularly.

Aibu to think in the grand scheme of things its not that bad?

I have to say I am rolling my eyes at all the smug posters who say “I’d need feed my kids horrible McDonald’s instead of give them <equally fatty/salty/calorific alternative food>”

tbh I prep all my meals and snacks so I don’t eat out often but I go for local cafes as they’ll make the sandwich to your specification.

so usually I’ll order a small sandwich with whole meal bread with lean meat and lettuce (i don’t use butter) and then maybe some small veggies on the side like tomatoes or cucumber

@Lily4444 having you as a mum sounds FUN 👍🏻

Are you serious?

IKR!

Some people are so eager to get on their high horse over such trivial things, signaling their virtue 🙄

Fries are fried potato - not crack cocaine or crystal meth. Not much different to what kids get at home.

Squash is not the end of the world either - just ignore the suggested dilution ratio. Robinson's and supermarket brand suggest to mix it waaay too strong (so you buy more!!). I never buy fruit shoot for this reason.

We should be more aware of things pretending to be "healthy" when they are anything but:

Sugary breakfast cereals loudly proclaiming their vitamin and mineral content

Fat free yoghurt = loads of sugar (normal yoghurt from whole milk will be 3.2g/100g fat, not exactly crime of the century)

You keep doing what you feel is best OP. All these people saying no to squash is ridiculous. When my son was a baby he would point blank refuse to drink plain water. That carried on to toddler-good. I used to offer it but he would turn away as soon as he realised what it was. So in order to keep him hydrated I had to flavour it very slightly with sugar free squash. He is now a very healthy and robust nearly 12 year old. My daughter on the hand loves water. Every baby is different.

I am 59 years old, when I had my kids in the 80's I fed them off the table, just a nibble or two, There is nothing wrong letting the little have a couple of fries.

There's nothing wrong with butter

Also that sounds shit

IMO as grandma who's 3 children survived squash (shock horror), in fact I'm so old the baby clinics gave out orange juice to parents in the 1960's to give us, heaven forbid anybody has real sugar. It doesn't matter a jot its not bad, it wont hurt, there is much worse things a parent can do.
I'm all for real sugar not nasty chemical fake sugar, oh and I saw salt mentioned guess what my generation and the one before had gravy salts, dripping off meat, meat persevered in salt not nitrates, oh yes and salt on food, we need salt, look at all the youngster developing POTs for which the treatment is salt tablets.
My father eats so much salt and fancy hes 91. Salt is not our enemy.

Why does it not qualify as food? What is your logic behind this, just out of interest.

BobbyBiscuits · 19/01/2024 22:38

If you have a routine where you get McDs, the little one will obviously feel left out if not given anything. If I could turn back time though, I would have avoided introducing Mcds to kids for as long as possible, like once they are invited to a birthday party aged 4 or something. It is rubbish, let's be honest. Not harmful occasionally but no nutrition and it's a rip off. Does the little one eat chips at home? It's the daily habits that are to be watched. Obviously the squash should be reduced, make it weaker and give it less often, to the point it's a weekend only treat.

What's your logic on dragging up a thread that's 18 months old?!

Adamp031184 · 20/01/2024 08:31

Oh sincerest apologies. I didn't see the date. I'll hand myself into the relevant authorities now here.

Again, very very sorry 🙏

Obesity starts early
Taste for processed foods starts when parent gives them processed food

Lol. I'm not thread police. Couldn't work out who you were replying to though as it obvs wasn't op. Also curious as to how you dug it up!

If you click the 'reply' button, you just reply to the thread and it goes to the bottom of 20 odd pages. If you want to respond to a particular post, click the 3 dots top right of the post and choose "quote".

It's fine. Honestly, people need to wind their necks in.

As for the squash, I was raised on it once I was off the boob. Nearly 40 now and squash is my main drink for hydration. I do have it pretty watery though. And apart from 2 fillings done in my late teens, my teeth are fine.

Oh for people worrying about choking...I pull over into a small carpark and we eat our McDonald's together and I play their fave songs on the radio and sing along.. and then we drive home. Its our weird little ritual. They don't eat driving along. And the baby is facing backwards but I either get him out or there's a large mirror so he can see me snd I can see him

I do try to give them good food 99% of the time. I'm a single mum who works full time (and the rest) so there probably is too much quick and easy stuff. I just enjoyed our little ritual for swimming, happy meal, singing and home but the look from the woman (who wasn't going to macdonalds) has made me stop and think. And now so had this thread!

Another mum gave you a funny look when you were sitting inside your car?

Yes I wouldn’t personally. All those trans fats can’t be good for a baby’s tiny vascular system.

Home made, organic only for us

Transfats are illegal here
