AIBU?

To give my 18 month old Macdonalds?

Benji4ever · 20/08/2022 11:42

Twice a month I take my two DS swimming all afternoon. On way home we get a drive through Macdonalds

The 3 year old has a happy meal. The 18 month old has a few of the chips. That's it.

I saw a mum give me one of those looks as I took some chips from the happy meal and gave them to the little one.

Is this awful? Its only twice a month and only a few chips. Also the 18 month old drink diluted squash regularly.

Aibu to think in the grand scheme of things its not that bad?

You don't live near a farm.

Are you going to tell us how much you love your animals?

Macdonald x2 per month - fine. Although, personally, I would not have introduced them to fast food that young.
I would not regularly give a child under 5 squash.

In the grand scheme of things, it probably doesn’t matter but don’t make it the thin end of the wedge. Childhood obesity is an enormous problem in this country now. I may sound OTT but I mean it kindly. I’m sure you are a lovely mum! 😍

Some people on this thread really have a flair for the dramatic. 😂 The posts about children screaming in the dentist's chair are particularly noteworthy. Oh, the humanity.

I also find it odd the way so many people's identity is wrapped up in what they consume and especially how it makes them feel superior to others. Bizarre.

I think the McDonald's is fine it isnt every week!
My DD drinks squash, she doesn't drink water very well. At one point she had to go to a&e with dehydration (she was poorly and refusing all drinks) so since then we're just glad she's drinking to be honest. She has seen a dentist and has no problems with her teeth (we also didn't go till she was 2, our first appointment was scheduled the week after lockdown hit so was cancelled). She's also had a few happy meals (again not every week) and isn't overweight. So you'd get no judgement from me!

I wouldn’t. There’s 19 ingredients in McDonald’s French fries I wouldn’t want my baby digesting all that, even just a few. Full of nasty PUFAs and chemicals you can’t pronounce.

Maybe the other mum looked at you disgustingly because she thought you were tight for not buying your 18 month old a happy meal too 😂

Too young to start them on a fast food addiction imo. My dd didn't have a McDonalds until she was over 5 as she was invited to a birthday party. We also didn't let her have fizzy drinks and to this day she's not mad on them.
The lure of McDonalds will get to them eventually so there's no need to introduce them to a crappy diet prematurely. Just pack a butty and some snacks eg banana, hummus and cucumber sticks etc cheaper too.

“Start them on the addiction…” what are you on about?! It’s twice a month.

Yes this is all fine, although maybe reduce the juice. My 2 children had similar and now are 15 & 10 and aren’t “addicted” to fast food, in fact my 15 year old daughter doesn’t like McDonald’s!

Yeah, start them on rubbish food/drink young, so they get a taste for it.

When they're an obese 12 year old you'll have no-one to blame but yourself.

Once in a while macdonalds isn't the worst thing.People give ham sandwiches to kids daily and that's heavily processed meat

That's what I want to know. Nutritionally a ham sandwich and a bag of crisps is very similar to Mcdonalds burger and fries. And yet almost no-one ever makes a fuss about that.

I also want to know about the 15 secret ingredients in McDonalds fries that they are blatantly hiding from everyone except @Inwiththenew when they only admit to putting potatoes, oil, dextrose and salt in to the rest of us including the Food Standards Agency.

@Inwiththenew I think the FSA would be very interested in a restaurant chain deliberately misleading the public about what is in their food, so what did they say when you told them about these 15 ingredients that are missing from the nutritional information on their website?

What a load of shite on here. 19 ingredients 🙈

DD3 has the occasional happy meal and squash and I give zero shits what anyone thinks about it 🤷‍♀️ She just had beans on toast for dinner too cos we fell asleep after a long day and I cba cooking anything now. See you in parent hell, OP. I'll save a drink for you (alcoholic squash).

What does the ability to pronounce a chemical have to do with how bad/good it is?

Hydroxycinnamic acids
5-Caffeoylquinic acid (chlorogenic acid)
p-Coumaroylquinic acid
Flavan-3-ols/procyanidins
Procyanidins B2
Procyanidins C1
Oligomeric procyanidins
Flavonols
Dihydrochalcones
Anthocyanins

All these(and more) are in an apple.

none of their drinks apart from proper coke have sugar. But I only give mine water or full sugar drinks as all artificial sweeteners including stevia are vile and much worse for you than sugar.

Yes I wouldn’t personally. All those trans fats can’t be good for a baby’s tiny vascular system.

Home made, organic only for us

I have a three year old and a two year old. They've never had McDonald's in their lives and I hope this continues for as long as possible. It's full of fat, salt and sugar. They drink water, never juice.
Those are my choices for my kids though. You do whatever you want.

Wait untill you have a 16:year old you might not be so smug then......
The angst on here is ridiculous 🙄

Excited101 · 21/08/2022 19:10

I wouldn’t, it’s so easy not to and it’s too young to be introduced to fast food and have it as a habit imo. If the kids will both eat better food and drink better drink- why would you give them poor options for the sake of it?

Report
Olsi109 · 21/08/2022 19:11

I personally wouldn't give my LO that young fast food - I barely give it my teenagers. However I wouldn't judge anyone else or give dirty looks for doing it. I wouldn't give squash either I'd give water and milk.

Mine still choose to eat healthy at 19 and 22. None of the fast food places are on their radar because they've never picked up the habit.

@whiteroseredrose are you seriously believing that in their entire 19-22 years they never touched a chip/fries, chicken nugget, fish finger or pizza?
