Monkey blood, jubblies and screwballs

Screwballs had a bubblegum sweet in the bottom? Sasaparilla was a herbily soft drink - even in the seventies it was an old persons kind of drink

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 19/08/2022 11:58

Raspberry sauce on icecream on Scotland

Hillsidehigh · 19/08/2022 12:04

Yes, screwballs with a bubbly. Wasn’t sasparilla like aniseed ? My gran had sasparilla sweets, also coltsfoot (?) rock, and she called liquorice ‘Spanish’

ScarlettDarling · 19/08/2022 12:06

I’m in NE and it was always monkeys blood when I was little but kids these days seem to call it strawberry sauce.

Gentleness · 19/08/2022 12:10

North eastern thing I think. It causes amusement to Brummies and outright horror to southerners.

mrsjg · 19/08/2022 12:12

North East - we call it monkeys blood.

Swingoutsistersledge2 · 19/08/2022 12:18

I'm from the NE and its always been Monkey's blood .

zukiecat · 19/08/2022 12:46

NE Scotland, and I have never heard of Monkey Blood before, it's just strawberry sauce.

We used to call police cars Jam Sandwiches, don't know if that's regional or not.

iklboo · 19/08/2022 13:01

Zukie - police cars were jam butty cars in Salford / Manchester when I was growing up too.

webuiltthiscityonrockandwheat · 19/08/2022 13:11

Northumberland and I've always known it as monkeys blood. Still ask for it from the ice cream man Grin

TattiePants · 19/08/2022 13:16

I'm in the NE so of course it's monkey's blood on my (Minchella's) ice cream.

As an aside- those of us who grew up in NE England: did you have a "pop man"? I'm mid-40s and we had one who cam once a week. I mentioned it the other day and DH (Londoner) looked at me like I was mad.

@QueenofLouisiana I'm a couple of years older than you and we had the 'Villa' pop man. I used to love their sarsparilla and dandelion & burdock!

ifoundthebread · 19/08/2022 00:00

Dont know if he was the pop man but we used to get glass bottles of pop delivered off the milk man. Cant beat dandelion and burdock out of a glass botte.

Barrs from a van. Tizer or D&B for me, cream soda for Dad. You used to get a deposit back if you returned the bottle the following visit.

Monkey blood for whippy ice cream from the vans, NEVER for Seaton Delaval ice cream (Rigi’s) though!

North East, north of Whitley Bay

Hillsidehigh · 19/08/2022 13:26

Dandelion and Burdock is the only acceptable drink for a chippy tea

abovedecknotbelow · 19/08/2022 13:30

Never ever heard of monkey blood - it's strawberry sauce 😂

My granny used to have a pop man in NI though, it was awesome - red lemonade, brown lemonade and I think there was a regular lemonade, coke and cherryade

Technosaurus · 19/08/2022 13:36

Yep, monkeys blood in Newcastle.

It's called "juice" in certain parts of Yorkshire - threw me off when I got asked if I wanted juice by the ice cream man. Strawberry sauce everywhere else.

Where I grew up in Newcastle the Ringtons man delivered tea and biscuits weekly in an 1920s van. Completely normal to me. People outside of Newcastle thought I was mental telling them about this... Then I told them about a theme park inside a shopping centre (Metroland) and they assumed I'd cracked.

Florelei · 19/08/2022 13:38

i grew up just outside of South Shields. When I was younger I remember asking for monkeys blood at minchella’s.

oooh I can taste their ice cream right now!

Used to love Metroland 😍 only reason I would go shopping lol

I'm in the north east and it's monkeys blood!

There is still a Ringtons van in my area 🤣

Metroland was class! I remember hearing the screams from the rollercoaster as soon as we entered the metro downstairs lol

My first job was in Minchella's on Ocean Road. I especially loved making the Knickerbocker Glories.

"Villa" was the company i was thinking of, i think 🤔 they used to have a factory or unit near where i grew up.

@ifoundthebread just remember, in addition to the Villa pop man, we also had Sykes pop. I really Fancy a Minchella's ice cream now but there's a big event at the seafront this weekend so all the roads are closed off. Might have to pop along to South Shields over the weekend.

Wavygravy1 · 19/08/2022 15:34

I’m NW and I’d never heard of it until I watched ambulance last night!
