Whats it called where you are and where are you? Do you have monkeys blood or is it strawberry sauce? Just seen on tv its a regional thing, mind is blown.

Northumberland here. Its monkey's blood - sauce you squeeze onto an ice cream cone.

Had no idea it was regional. I thought everyone called it that.

ohfook · 19/08/2022 00:53

I'm north east England and we call it monkeys blood. No idea why though.

As an aside- those of us who grew up in NE England: did you have a "pop man"? I'm mid-40s and we had one who cam once a week. I mentioned it the other day and DH (Londoner) looked at me like I was mad.

Yes we did! I still think it was a good idea; it's glass bottles which were collected back in for recycling. I wonder why it stopped?

Popsicle33 · 19/08/2022 00:57

NE hear and NEVER heard of monkey blood. Revolting. I do remember the pop man in the van though!

sundayvibeswig22 · 19/08/2022 01:18

Ireland- north and south and never heard of it!

Danceswithkids · 19/08/2022 03:44

I....what??
I guess I would call it red sauce/strawberry sauce.

I read the title and never would have guessed ice cream related in a million years. Why such a disgusting name for food??

(Very southern, in case you hadn't guessed!)

Kitkatcatflap · 19/08/2022 03:44

Well you live and you learn. I opened this thread thinking it was an insight or misunderstanding about monkey pox but it's about ice cream sauce.

wildthingsinthenight · 19/08/2022 03:55

Definitely not just NE!
Midlands here and we say Monkey's blood and we had a pop man when we were kids

CMSdividend · 18/08/2022 23:51

My grandad used to called our actual, rhesus negative, blood that so I had no idea it was to do with ice cream toppings 😂

Rh- blood would be not monkey blood.

WiddlinDiddlin · 19/08/2022 04:07

Monkey Blood here in the West Midlands, was also Monkey Blood in North Manchester and Lancaster... never seen green sauce, we have purple sauce here but thats just purple sauce!

WiddlinDiddlin · 19/08/2022 04:09

Silverswirl · 19/08/2022 00:08

Why on Earth would you call it monkeys blood? What have monkeys got to do with it?
Never ever heard of this. We call it strawberry sauce / chocolate sauce / caramel sauce in the SE.
What do you call chocolate sauce then? Monkeys shite?

Er no thats grim. We call it chocolate sauce of course.

I'd be in Minchella's- either on Ocean Road or at The Nook.

Possibly that's very regionalised! My Dad and I still talk about Monkey's Blood and he left the country 30 years ago!

Minchellas was the best ice cream.

GlowGreenGreat · 19/08/2022 04:24

Oh an we had monkeys blood on our ice cream, that’s raspberry sauce to everyone else

Hello fellow sandancer!

QueenofLouisiana · 19/08/2022 05:28

@NeverDropYourMooncup interesting suggestion ! No idea though.

<waves to fellow Sanddancers> I had no idea that Minchella’s at The Nook had gone. I went home for a few days at Easter (first time in about 15 years), but didn’t get to that part.

You're a Sanddancer then? I am too, and it was monkeys blood growing up.

Lived in the SE for years now, and I've no idea what my kids would call it as they've never asked for it. Probably just strawberry sauce though.

Geordie here and yes to monkey’s blood and the pop man.

Soubriquet · 19/08/2022 09:53

Strawberry sauce!

AllPlayedOut · 19/08/2022 10:01

It's raspberry sauce to me.(Glasgow) I've never heard anyone refer to it as monkey's blood. Thankfully. I think it'd put me off my ice cream.

Creepymanonagoatfarm · 19/08/2022 10:02

Geordie here - monkey's blood.

cheekychatta · 19/08/2022 10:04

In London it's called Claret

Fairislefandango · 19/08/2022 10:05

Never heard of it! I'm from SE but live in NW. I'd call it strawberry sauce. Not that I've ever needed to call it anything tbh - I don't think I've ever had strawberry sauce on ice cream. Why would you when there's chocolate sauce? Grin

Hobbesmanc · 19/08/2022 10:06

Teessider here- was deffo Monkey Blood. Our Pop man was Lowcocks. Best Creme Soda ever!
