We had a Bon Accord man...a lorry who delivered crates or bottles of fizzy juice....mmm pineapple! I lived near Edinburgh

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 19/08/2022 00:00

I'm from the Home Counties and didn't even know it was possible to get sauce or sherbet on a 99 until I moved to the NW in 2001. The option did not exist.

@QueenofLouisiana my husband talks fondly of the 'pop man' that would bring the green cream soda round - another thing I'd never seen or heard of till I moved up here!

As an aside- those of us who grew up in NE England: did you have a "pop man"? I'm mid-40s and we had one who cam once a week. I mentioned it the other day and DH (Londoner) looked at me like I was mad.

Dont know if he was the pop man but we used to get glass bottles of pop delivered off the milk man. Cant beat dandelion and burdock out of a glass botte.

We had a pop man in the midlands.

Never heard of monkey blood though.

daveyfish · 19/08/2022 00:01

Haha! Monkey’s blood places you firmly in NE England and is my favourite name for it. I grew up in Edinburgh and we called it raspberry.

Tauranga · 19/08/2022 00:03

@daveyfish you must be posh...my family all from Edinburgh call it Monkey Blood.

SkiingIsHeaven · 19/08/2022 00:04

We call it monkey's blood and we are in the north west but my family hails from the north east.

MuffinMcLayLikeABundleOfHay · 19/08/2022 00:05

I call it Monkey's blood as I'm from Newcastle so now by dc call it that and we don't live there.

I've got some Percy the Pig Monkey's blood now. That will be confusing.

SkiingIsHeaven · 19/08/2022 00:07

You have to ask for it in a Geordi accent or it doesn't count.

Silverswirl · 19/08/2022 00:08

Why on Earth would you call it monkeys blood? What have monkeys got to do with it?
Never ever heard of this. We call it strawberry sauce / chocolate sauce / caramel sauce in the SE.
What do you call chocolate sauce then? Monkeys shite?

DeoForty · 19/08/2022 00:11

NI here and it's just sauce, but there are certain areas in NI where they replace the flake with a Cadbury Finger.

MissFancyDay · 19/08/2022 00:15

We had a pop lorry, in the Fens in the 70s and it delivered Corona. We called the red sauce on ice cream nosebleed sauce.

BackToWhereItAllBegan · 19/08/2022 00:16

I'm from the NE and I used to get my Mr Whippy with monkey's blood on from the ice cream van on a Saturday night.
We also had a pop man come round every week, we used to get Cream Soda and Dandelion & Burdock!

Is that an Italian Geordie?

QuietYou · 19/08/2022 00:21

My favourite ice cream man calls it juice, but all the others call it sauce.

Whyismycatanasshat · 19/08/2022 00:21

@QueenofLouisiana The Nook one is long gone; I went “home” for the first time in over 20 years last month and my friends told me it had closed years back.
It’s the one institution I couldn’t believe had gone!

kimchifox · 19/08/2022 00:22

Monkey's Blood? Never heard of that, ever! What do you call chocolate sauce?!

JohnsShirt · 19/08/2022 00:24

Monkey, (NOT monkey's) blood.
Yep, it's a North East thing.

Chocolate sauce. 😂😎

Benjaminsniddlegrass · 19/08/2022 00:31

West Midlands here - as soon as I read monkey blood I thought must be red sauce for ice cream - definitely not just a NE thing, very much remember from my childhood!

Also anyone else worry if the Hartlepool crew started ordering monkey blood?!

We do order it!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 19/08/2022 00:34

Is this tenuously linked to the monkey accused of being a spy, by any chance?

SkiingIsHeaven · 19/08/2022 00:42

@MuffinMcLayLikeABundleOfHay of course. The Italian's make the best ice cream. So good if has given me fat fingers.

MsMarple · 19/08/2022 00:44

My mum always called it Monkey’s Blood and she was from the north east - you’ve brought back some happy summer memories!
