Whats it called where you are and where are you? Do you have monkeys blood or is it strawberry sauce? Just seen on tv its a regional thing, mind is blown.

Monkey’s blood is red sauce and Dragon’s blood is green sauce, both for ice cream. North East.

Green sauce for ice cream? Is this a thing?

5128gap · 19/08/2022 10:08

Midlands. Monkey blood, always.
Yes to the pop man too. Although that was in the 70s. We used to take him the empties and get some money back in return.
We also called the corner shop the 'outdoor'.

risefromyourgrave · 19/08/2022 10:08

I grew up in Hartlepool and assumed it was only in Hartlepool that it was called monkey’s blood because of the monkey hanging. Then I watched Ambulance last night and realised it was more widely spread!

squishee · 19/08/2022 10:09

I opened this thread expecting it to be about monkeypox!

I vaguely remember red sauce being called MB sometimes. SW.

I'd be in Minchella's- either on Ocean Road or at The Nook.

Possibly that's very regionalised! My Dad and I still talk about Monkey's Blood and he left the country 30 years ago!

In Roker? Went past there the other day, mam claimed she knew the way home from Marsden Rock (she didn’t!) and my sat nav wasn’t working.

Monkey blood, yes, it’s a northern thing.

FourTeaFallOut · 19/08/2022 10:11

North East ... I call it Red Eye...never heard called Monkey's Blood.

FourTeaFallOut · 19/08/2022 10:19

You know, that's the first time I've written that down and now I'm looking at is suspiciously...like maybe everyone around me was saying "red dye" the whole time and I've just been saying it wrong. 🤣

MrPoppysParka · 19/08/2022 10:20

I’ve never heard of this!

Did anyone else used to ask for a ‘pop-eye’ at the ice cream van? Or was that a regional thing too?

I've never heard of a pop-eye. What is it?

A rocket lolly stuck in the top of a 99!

HelloAllll · 19/08/2022 10:24

Its definitely not even a 'whole of the NE thing'. No one where i am from calls it that. i have however heard people from the durham area call it monkeys blood

AllPlayedOut · 19/08/2022 10:24

Thank you. No, that's a completely foreign concept to me. Where are you from?

QueenofLouisiana · 19/08/2022 10:26

Yes, I used to be able to ask for a Pop-Eye. No ideas where the name came from!

@Brigante9 I lived in Harton but my Nanna lived about half a mile from Marsden Rock- between that and Horsely Hill. I've been gone a long time now though.

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 19/08/2022 10:29

Me NW- Red sauce

DH London - Raspberry sauce

My DGM (92) and NE originally - Sasparilla sauce

East Midlands originally. I did always wonder if it was regional!

AllPlayedOut · 19/08/2022 10:35

Do you eat them separately or dip the lolly into the ice cream and eat it like that?

Ivecomeoutoflurking · 19/08/2022 10:43

I'm a Geordie from the Gateshead area. Monkeys blood where I'm from, however when I moved to North East Lincolnshire 15 years ago I got some very funny looks when asking for monkeys blood on my 99!!! They've never heard that here!!!

Flapjacker48 · 19/08/2022 10:44

This term is used in the NE - never heard it until I lived there!

stuntbubbles · 19/08/2022 10:47

I’m from the midlands but call it monkeys blood – but my parents are from the NE so probably exported it. Met with blank looks when we moved south!

CaitlyntheCactus · 19/08/2022 11:08

Its raspberry sauce in the North West

80sballetgirl · 19/08/2022 11:11

ZeroFuchsGiven · 18/08/2022 23:38

Im a Geordie, its monkeys blood 🤣

Yes! My parents are Geordies & it’s always been Monkey Blood! Now it’s passed to my DC & now their DC 😂😂

That was a witch’s hat (witch’s/witches’/witches’s?!!!) where I’m from, although the lolly was a ‘5p lolly’, like a strawberry Minimilk.

myalternatename · 19/08/2022 11:51

Hillsidehigh · 19/08/2022 11:52

iklboo · 19/08/2022 11:54

Monkey blood in Salford / Manchester when I was growing up too. The ice cream guy used to ask if you wanted monkey blood or chocolate sauce.
