Grilled cheese - not a meal?

So my partner makes a 'meal' he calls grilled cheese'. It literally consists of just cheese grated directly onto a plate and put under the grill until crispy 😐. I've been to his mum's house and seen her make something similar where she cracks an egg into a plate, covers it in grated cheddar and grills it.

He insists that this is a normal meal that everyone eats.

I've literally never seen anyone else eat this. Any time I've heard people talk about a 'grilled cheese' they have meant something like a cheese toastie.

Am I being ignorant or is this just NOT a well known dish. It's just a weird habit peculiar to his family?

Also, who the F cooks an egg under a grill!

Sounds yummy!

LindsayStauffer · 15/08/2022 14:30

Never heard of it but it sounds nice enough. Some people eat cheese on its own for a meal/snack, why not melted?

SummerLovin123 · 15/08/2022 14:30

Also egg on pizza is really good!

SalviaOfficinalis · 15/08/2022 14:30

Grilled cheese is what Americans call cheese toasties isn’t it?

But yes this is completely batshit.

CatherinedeBourgh · 15/08/2022 14:31

In some countries they cook it on the barbecue.

It's really nice.

thefizz · 15/08/2022 14:31

No carbs. Sounds ideal for getting the protein in. Let them at it, you don't have to eat it!

RaisingH · 15/08/2022 14:31

Definitely not a meal BUT the egg and.grilled cheese dish brings back childhood memory's for me! A favourite dish the I used to call eggymac as the grilled egg remided me.of a mackintosh coat .

Yes. We do ours on sourdough bread with sharp cheddar and bacon. Yum.

misskatamari · 15/08/2022 14:33

What…? Just literally a melted bit of grated cheese?? Yeah, that’s not a meal!

Winterfellismyhome · 15/08/2022 14:33

Its literally just cheese? No its not a meal

Luvacuppatea2 · 15/08/2022 14:34

Never heard of this, but it sounds divine! I adore cheese grilled until it’s crispy on anything, so can’t think why I’ve no thought of having it on its own - inspired 😊😊😊

But it's basically just a cheese sandwich that is toasted (or fried in USA) with melted cheese...if.you consider a sandwich a meal then yes it is.....plus they are delicious, an easy cheap quick meal that is yummy

thefizz · 15/08/2022 14:35

A meal is not defined anywhere. It is food that satisfies you and has good things in it. Some people eat well like me, but can only have small portions four or five times a day. A full dinner would make me heave. This is a medical issue nothing to do with any food issues.

There’s no bread in this version.

Pr1mr0se · 15/08/2022 14:35

Wierd. Just cheese is not a meal. At best it's a snack. Usually cheese in any form is accompanied by something else, jacket potato, pasta, the rest of the pizza. Any of those would be a meal, just the cheese is not.

Except in this case its without the bread

tokyotea · 15/08/2022 14:37

It's kind of weird. But then when I was younger I used to microwave a block of cheese and eat it just like that all melty and then let it cool so it'd solidify a bit. Can feel my ateries getting blocked just thinking about it. Blush

Mrsjayy · 15/08/2022 14:38

We call it roasted or toasted cheese in Scotland its more of a lunch snack. Its not a cheese toastie .

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 15/08/2022 14:39

Depends on the density of the cheese. Grilled or shallow-fried Halloumi is a full meal for me. I've never heard of it cooked the way you describe, though!

Mrsjayy · 15/08/2022 14:39

Oh I misread its just melted cheese on a plate ' we put it on bread. He is clearly wrong as is his mum

purplecorkheart · 15/08/2022 14:40

That reminds me how our school canteen used to make cheese on toast but they toasted the bread in the toaster and microwaved the cheese and put the two together.

I have seen youtube/tick tock where they put cheese in a mini waffle maker and then use the melted cheese slice as a wrap/bread slice in a low carb diet but that seems to be a recent fad.

Charliecatpaws · 15/08/2022 14:40

I often had this as a Sunday night supper in the 70's, usually while watching That's Life! My mouth is watering just thinking of it!

HilaryBriss · 15/08/2022 14:41

My mum used to serve up a plate of grilled cheese as describes but it came accompanied by oatcakes (the Staffordshire variety), maybe a piece of bacon or two and pickled onions.

Fairislefandango · 15/08/2022 14:49

YANBU - that is not remotely a meal!

iamme21 · 15/08/2022 14:51

My dad used to do this, but he would have a slice of bread and butter with it.
