Grilled cheese - not a meal?

So my partner makes a 'meal' he calls grilled cheese'. It literally consists of just cheese grated directly onto a plate and put under the grill until crispy 😐. I've been to his mum's house and seen her make something similar where she cracks an egg into a plate, covers it in grated cheddar and grills it.

He insists that this is a normal meal that everyone eats.

I've literally never seen anyone else eat this. Any time I've heard people talk about a 'grilled cheese' they have meant something like a cheese toastie.

Am I being ignorant or is this just NOT a well known dish. It's just a weird habit peculiar to his family?

Also, who the F cooks an egg under a grill!

How much cheese are we talking about? I would eat a handful as a snack but not a whole meals worth - I'd gag!

abovedecknotbelow · 15/08/2022 19:37

You've just reminded me I used to make an after school snack that was grated cheese, microwaved, and eaten with a spoon...

But no it's not a meal, a grilled cheese isn't a toastie, it's a proper fried or grilled cheese sandwich, buttered in the outside to go crispy, cheese is gooey.

If your husband used Parmesan is would be called a Parmesan crisp, but still not a meal!

We don't need carbs in every meal, to make it a meal. With the egg it sounds perfect for moderate carbers. If you work out the calories, it's a great smallish meal that will be filling because of the protein etc and protects bone health. As long as food is cooked, it doesn't matter on the method.

Toasted cheese is a good quick meal in our house

Suzi888 · 15/08/2022 19:39

Yuck. That is all.

Sd352 · 15/08/2022 19:42

This sounds great. I quite want to try it now (not in this heat though!)

I thought you meant something like grilled halloumi or paneer tikka, which are both fantastic.

also love an American style grilled cheese.

Is it cheddar ? Or a more melty alpine cheese, or Brie or similar ? As melted cheddar is just greasy, I don’t personally like melted hard cheeses for that reason

Just melted cheese on the plates?

A580Hojas · 15/08/2022 19:44

A pile of plain melted cheese is not a meal in my book.

Threelittlelambs · 15/08/2022 19:45

Yep just melted cheese and yes hard cheese -

Inthe90sitwas · 15/08/2022 19:56

Grilled cheese is a thing - lile halloumi in Greece for example - but (a) it’s unusual in the UK and (b) it is never served alone!!! It needs veg and carbs, you can’t just eat a block of cheese and call it dinner how unhealthy and unsatisfying is that 🤣

Baystard · 15/08/2022 20:00

Sounds lovely! I'm fond of a whole block of Feta roasted in the oven (but now thinking I could just grill it) with some salad. Definitely a meal!

TwoMonthsOff · 15/08/2022 20:20

@Threelittlelambs
oh right okay then, not my idea of a meal, or even a ‘snack’ I’d need crackers and something to refresh it but everyone has different tastes 😭reminds me of that ‘freaky eaters’ show i remember one lad who only ate blocks of supermarket cheddar cheese and took about thirty of them on holiday 😭

Tigerstripes1 · 15/08/2022 20:21

We called it frizzled cheese as a kid. Mature cheddar on a plate, melted in the microwave (occasionally tomatoes or onions added) covered in vinegar and black pepper with some bread and butter cut in little triangles.

I wish I wasn't on a diet!

Diplidocus4 · 15/08/2022 20:21

Had it often as a meal , sometimes with chopped spring onions....
definitely a meal !

Tigerstripes1 · 15/08/2022 20:22

Not a meal though, we had it for supper!

PurpleFlower1983 · 15/08/2022 20:22

Not a meal but definite comfort food so I not

TwoMonthsOff · 15/08/2022 20:22

@Baystard

TwoMonthsOff · 15/08/2022 20:23

@Baystard i put crumbled walnuts on that one too 🐷

Baystard · 15/08/2022 20:26

Ooh @TwoMonthsOff that looks good!

VestaTilley · 15/08/2022 20:26

Definitely a snack and not a meal.

BaileySharp · 15/08/2022 20:30

Grilled cheese is an American cheese toastie not literally grill some cheese on a plate. Is it a lot of cheese? It doesn't sound at all like a proper meal. At least do it on bread and make it cheese on toast!

TwoMonthsOff · 15/08/2022 20:31

@Baystard
i can’t even describe it in words ….it’s so easy as well and not (too) much guilt as feta isn’t as high in fats

it’s from ‘the Greek foodie’ there are such lovely recipes on there 🐷

853ax · 15/08/2022 20:41

Before I try it can any plate go under the grill? I thought it would crack

Baystard · 15/08/2022 20:42

@TwoMonthsOff I'm on low carb so would skip the bread but I love the idea (on low carb I can have a much fat as I like hence i eat feta a block at a time Grin)
