Grilled cheese - not a meal?

So my partner makes a 'meal' he calls grilled cheese'. It literally consists of just cheese grated directly onto a plate and put under the grill until crispy 😐. I've been to his mum's house and seen her make something similar where she cracks an egg into a plate, covers it in grated cheddar and grills it.

He insists that this is a normal meal that everyone eats.

I've literally never seen anyone else eat this. Any time I've heard people talk about a 'grilled cheese' they have meant something like a cheese toastie.

Am I being ignorant or is this just NOT a well known dish. It's just a weird habit peculiar to his family?

Also, who the F cooks an egg under a grill!

My mum used to serve up a plate of grilled cheese as describes but it came accompanied by oatcakes (the Staffordshire variety), maybe a piece of bacon or two and pickled onions.

This sounds bloody lovely

I would have said no.

Except I recently devised a meal of tomato sauce, grated mozzarella, smoked ham, artichokes and olives on a plate put under the grill.

Ie - all the pizza topping without the bread base which I don’t like.

@Baystard
it would be lovely with some nice strong salad greens I reckon…..like spinach and rocket …and some tasty tomatoes …. tip if you make it just thin the honey down in a little pot in microwave for a few seconds, (recipe says use pan !!)
I hope you make it and love it as much as I do (really how could you not?) 😍

I meant I would have said yes, it is a weird habit.

Egg baked with cheese is perfectly normal. Just cheese is pretty weird, but not all that different from the posh pots of welsh rarebit you can buy these days.

Dh eats what he calls "cheese on a plate". Which is cheese, on a plate, microwaved until melted. He does scoop it up with bread. But I still think it's weird.

We call it cheese on a plate as well - where are you from?

Threelittlelambs · 15/08/2022 22:13

Does he eat scrabbled egg and corn beef as well?
