Jack Monroe again

Has anyone seen the recent tweet about her pawning/selling three diamond engagement rings? Aibu to think if you are pleading poverty and asking the general public to donate money one week and then showing off pictures of three massive diamonds you own the next, it's never going to go down well? Especially when you are already being challenged on lying and grifting?

For a long time I thought JM was nothing but a force of a good but I can't understand how she can be so tone deaf. It can't be deliberate but equally how can she not realise how it looks to produce three huge rings just a week after claiming she's so skint she needs handouts.

Apologies if there's already a thread on this.

Pretty sure they split up years ago.

Which is the danger of quoting a notoriously vicious and unreliable source such as tattle.

The problem is, yes, she split up with Louisa Compton in 2020 but she is using their split as a reason for being in poverty in 2022 because she has been left with an expensive rental. Why couldn’t she have moved out before now?

But then if you’re struggling to pay rent why buy an expensive dog? And Botox and fillers. I appreciate it’s no-one else’s business but when you’re making out you’re skint and asking for money then I can understand why people start asking questions.

JubileeTrifle · 15/08/2022 22:22

It’s nonsense. People even get out of fixed term contracts. Even if she had re-signed just before she left 2 years ago any kind of agreement would be over by now.
Talking about moving to a tiny flat is one of her ‘pity me’ threads. DH grew up in a one bed flat as did many of his peers. Thousands and thousands of people live in small flats, she needs to get over herself.

However, I tend to think that whether she is telling the truth or not, it is her own business and not ours, even if she may be using it to feed a particular narrative

I have to disagree with this. She's selling herself as a product, and frequently asking for financial contributions on the basis of her financial situation, so being less than honest then tends to veer into con-artistry.

You didn't read my post properly.

I said that specifically in relation to the scrutiny of custody of her son. I don't believe that should be the focus of attention. Even if it appears relevant, it's personal, and there are many more points to be challenged.

I really don't get why everyone is so obsessed with this person on MN. There are worse people out there than JM.

Is this something to do with Keir Starmer and what he said today? These threads always materialise when he talks about the Tory party being shit at looking after people in poverty.

No. Nothing

HighlandPony · 16/08/2022 01:10

Tbh your original comment seems a bit out of touch too. Poor folk can’t have family heirlooms that spend more time in cash generator than on their fingers coz the 17 year old cars failed yet another MOT? Because my wedding and engagement rings will disagree with you there. As will my great grans silver photo frames and my grandads RAF medals….. which I never managed to ‘buy back’ in time so they’re lost forever.

Learningtosayno · 16/08/2022 01:13

The comments about her appearance aren't on.

I was a fan of Jackfor years, but even I now admit that I was duped. She is very good at self PR TBF, but then that is also how she's in this mess.

Can someone explain the bean washing?

I saw her tweets a few weeks ago in which she said it was her suggestion for what to do if you didn't like spaghetti hoops or baked beans but you didn't have any choice because you were relying on what was in a package from the food bank.

Atanyangle · 16/08/2022 07:14

I think that jack isn’t very well. I feel quite sorry for them but they seem like a naughty 4yo who’ll say/do anything to get you to notice them. I wonder what the family reunion Sunday dinner table is like

To whoch people who volunteer in fodbanks replied that they can swap things so no one has to eat week worth of hoops

I think she's very vulnerable.

Yes, she's inconsistent, annoying and combative. I feel she has tried to do some good and has had some impact. Others disagree.

But I find the concerted campaign against her really worrying. Some bullying in schools (by no means all, and I'm not victim blaming here) happens to children who are odd, don't follow social rules, and make themselves vulnerable by trying to be something they are not. The bullying is still wrong, dangerous, and it has to be tackled.

It's like a pack of hyenas circling a wounded deer and you have to really ask why you're obsessed with her and not other people whose crimes against humanity are so much greater.

I made the mistake of going on Tattle to check something said on here. I came across the introduction to Jack Monroe. Just...wow. who has time to compile this? How much money do they make from it? What is it like to be a person who spends their time combing through someone's back catalogue to list every time they used a word out of context?

It's just evil and you need to question why you want to be part of it when there are so many others you could take to task for so much worse.

I agree, it's terrible. People bullied Boris Johnson in a similar way, likewise poor Kevin Spacey and Harvey Weinstein. Captain Tom's daughter was bullied for similar reasons to Jack.

It's just because all these people don't follow meaningless social rules. When will these meanies learn not to criticise public figures?

BishyBarnyBee · 16/08/2022 08:47

She's hardly Harvey Weinstein.

Totally agree, being criticised for doing wrong things or bad things is not bullying.

I dont think shes vulnerable from what I read, obviously no one on here knows her, why this constant excusing of someone who lies about things and is inconsistent as 'unstable and vulnerable'.

Agreed. And if we're talking about bullying, Jack isn't averse to causing a pile on herself. Jamie Oliver, David Walliams, Jk Rowling, any random Twitter user who she thinks may be even slightly criticising her...no one is immune to a Jack Monroe dog pile. She knows exactly what she's doing as well.

Oh god yeah, she even encouraged others to go on the which hunts

scottishgirl69 · 16/08/2022 12:38

She tweeted last night saying that if you come for someone with half a million followers you should expect blowback

Some of her fans are vicious

FlorettaB · 16/08/2022 12:43

If you are a public figure and you (or your ‘followers’) do searches on your name and then choose to reply directly to comments (about your ‘work’ not anything personal) that were never directed at you, it makes you look like a egomaniac.

Yeah, she's not averse to a Twitter vanity search. She patrolled the Daily Kitchen hashtag in lockdown and sniped at people on that as well, even if they didn't mention her by name.

For someone who claims to 'work 100 hours a week', she sure spends a lot of that time on Twitter.

DietCokeExtraIce · 16/08/2022 13:11

Exactly. Her time would be better spent actually addressing some of the questions about what she has been doing with the money she has received.

donquixotedelamancha · 16/08/2022 13:23

She's hardly Harvey Weinstein.

A difference of degree, not type.

If it's bullying to criticise a public figure for lying to solicit money from the gullible then surely it's equally bad to criticise public figures for any other reason.

If we draw the line at proven criminality then, fine, Weinstein is fair game but not the others.

The point remains, either we can criticise Vardy for lying, Monroe for grifting, Clarkson for racism and The YouTuber Owen Jones for being a disgusting piece of faeces or we can't.

Opinions about these people vary but nobody ever says we shouldn't discuss their behaviour, except whenever Jack Monroe does something.

TootsAtOwls · 16/08/2022 15:19

It's bonkers that she sees herself as an advisor to people in poverty when she can't handle money at all. Why would anyone take her advice on budgets?

Learningtosayno · 16/08/2022 16:06

This will always be my favorite clip of her:

m.youtube.com/watch?v=FCs-RU71F8c

Ah

MsPincher · 16/08/2022 17:29

Why is it when people criticize JM perfectly validly for pretending to be poor to make a career that instead of responding to the issues, certain posters just attack anyone for criticizing her? How is it evil to criticize someone for pretending to be a poor vulnerable person (while having original art works and diamonds) and asking strangers (some of whom can barely afford food) to give you money? It’s a valid criticism imo and there’s nothing evil about making it at all.

It’s pretty bad to pretend to be extremely poor (selling lightbulbs, boiling soap, etc) to beg money off people and make a career out of it when you are anything but poor. It’s not the worst thing anyone has ever done but it’s perfectly legitimate to criticize people for doing something wrong even if others have done something worse.
