Has anyone seen the recent tweet about her pawning/selling three diamond engagement rings? Aibu to think if you are pleading poverty and asking the general public to donate money one week and then showing off pictures of three massive diamonds you own the next, it's never going to go down well? Especially when you are already being challenged on lying and grifting?

For a long time I thought JM was nothing but a force of a good but I can't understand how she can be so tone deaf. It can't be deliberate but equally how can she not realise how it looks to produce three huge rings just a week after claiming she's so skint she needs handouts.

Apologies if there's already a thread on this.

There's a lot about Jack that doesn't add up. She's a very interesting person but not for any of the reasons she thinks she is.

I'm not sure it isn't deliberate. Her fans seem not to care about the inconsistency and without these regular twitter dramas she'd have faded into obscurity by now.

ArcticSkewer · 15/08/2022 06:08

She's autistic. I'd put a lot of the 'tone deaf' stuff down to that tbh. I doubt it's deliberate.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/08/2022 06:11

I've read that scammers deliberately put spelling mistakes in their emails so that people who notice and see that as a warning sign self-exclude. The scammers can then be confident that anyone who does respond to 'Appelsuport.com' is a good prospect for them. Parallels?

Self-diagnosed.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 15/08/2022 06:13

Oh ffs, again (with her, not the thread). Broke, getting by, pleading poverty they/them/she/her, autistic- by her own diagnosis and no one else’s, afaik-, the cat thing, the dog thing, the railing at Jamie Oliver, the use of Patreon, the inconsistency about whether her child lives with her FT or not at all, the endless Twitter spats.

The most charitable interpretation is that she is unwell and really needs a break from social media for her own good.

CiderJolly · 15/08/2022 06:19

I would say having to sell your jewellery is pretty skint!

Sharrowgirl · 15/08/2022 06:22

I don’t quite understand. If she’s selling/pawning said diamonds, then surely that means she is skint? Seems consistent to me…

Jack Monroe is many things, but she's definitely not skint.

Viewfromthetower · 15/08/2022 06:25

Why pawn not sell? More performative?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/08/2022 06:28

A week or two ago she was apparently tweeting that she had been unable to afford shampoo for two years and was boiling up soap as a substitute. This was at odds with other tweets from a few months earlier, but putting that to one side, most people finding money tight would sell or pawn a diamond ring before taking to Twitter and asking other people for money. I mean, three engagement rings? She's single at present. They're not prized gifts from a current partner.

stuntbubbles · 15/08/2022 06:29

Isn’t she decluttering? And getting rid was about headspace. Odd choice to pawn and not sell or donate, if so.

The best thing to do is not pay attention to her. I don’t believe she’s skint for a moment.

Unfortunately she/they appears to be a consistent grifter. The inconsistencies in her stories and poverty-shtick (despite having a very comfortable life and background) are confusing.

InsertPunHere · 15/08/2022 06:34

Who has 3 engagement rings? Aren’t you supposed to give them back?

I think being able to hang on to rings from a broken engagement and not automatically think of selling them shows you’re not remotely desperate for money…

so to only get round to pawning them now… shows there haven’t been many wolf-at-the-door moments since the engagement was called off

FangsForTheMemory · 15/08/2022 06:40

Nobody is perfect but I’m sick of the threads on here criticising Jack. They mostly chew over the same ground over and over again. There’s clearly a vendetta against her on Mumsnet. I wonder why some people are so desperate to discredit her. She’s been consistently campaigning about food poverty for years and has done a great deal of good. She’s on the side of the angels. Leave her alone.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/08/2022 06:44

If all she did on Twitter was campaign about food poverty, I'd be cheering her on. However, she also asks for money, claiming she's poor, and her stories don't stand up to scrutiny.

TheBermudaTriangle · 15/08/2022 06:45

It leaves a bad taste that she's so willing to proffer her begging-bowl at all times (in her blog, on Twitter etc) despite being a published author, having TV appearances etc. She has a healthy Patreon, and I find it so awful that you're essentially milking the very audience who has little disposable income to start with.

For example, why buy a fashionable dog from a breeder, if you are apparently living so precariously? How can you pay to care for the animal, it's healthcare, insurance, food etc - if you can't afford to feed yourself and your family, or keep the lights on?

Agree with that ^

Why didn't you sell, rather than pawn the rings?

GrinGrin

On the side of the angels? Are you having a laugh? She's on the side of Jack.

What good has she done exactly?

SunflowerDuck · 15/08/2022 06:51

I defended her initially in the other thread. But the patreon is mieny every month for nothing and average wage at least.

So even if chaotic lifestyle/mh difficulties etc theres a good passive income at least.

The claiming to be so poor to need to boil soap is nuts.

I'd definitely go for selling jewellery before asking strangers to donate money.

Boybandfacedfannyfart · 15/08/2022 06:52

Couldn’t the angles have a word with the big man and ask him to stop covering beans in sauce so people don’t have to rinse them? 🤔
