To say DS cannot cosplay

DS 14 wants to cosplay anime and I said no. My reason is I’ve seen it used as a kink in porn and people find it sexy. Hes very upset so AIBU?

YANBU I have very irrational strong views on anime. The overall aesthetic is just a giant red flag.

It depends what we're talking about - if it's something from Studio Ghibli like Totoro, or a superhero then I can't see the problem? Anime is just a term for Japanese animation. It seems a bit rigid to dismiss an entire nation's animation because of your own prejudice? If the specific costume is inappropriate, then of course that's a different story and he shouldn't wear it.

I used to love cosplay when I was in my teens/early 20s, some of the costumes at conventions are amazing.

‘Anime’ is just any Japanese cartoon. Lumping them together is like saying all western cartoons are the same, like peppa pig is as bad as South Park.
Cosplay is harmless fun 99.99% of the time. It’s just dressing up, same as costume parties or Halloween, but better costumes!

Yes people can incorporate it into porn sometimes but that’s true of absolutely everything ever: if it exists, there’s porn of it.

Why not open a line of communication and ask your son about the particular characters he's interested in? Then you can Google them and make a much more informed judgement. Maybe watch some YouTube videos?

My daughter is a huge Studio Ghibli fan. Whilst some if the content is odd it's not inappropriate for teenagers, and comes under the anime genre.

It's the same as saying, 'cartoons' not 'Disney cartoons'. There's some dark stuff.

Anime is a very broad spectrum of animations from Japan. Ban that, and you might as well ban all dress up.

My cousin is massively into cosplay and has been for years with her friends. She's asexual and a virgin at 35 (she tells us rather openly and proudly). I don't think the two are necessarily connected.

Some may be sexual or pornographic, but they have a whole range of content just like anime. アニメ (anime) is the name for animated cartoons. The difference is that one is in print and one is on film, rather than anything to do with content.

You're thinking of hentai which also isn't necessarily porn, hentai is a term for anime or manga that has adult or sexual content.

Most manga and anime will have a recommended age rating printed somewhere on the book/dvd cover or displayed on the screen during the opening credits.

Just like Westernised animation and comics, the onus is on you to make sure your DC are watching and reading age/content appropriate material.

Pokemon, Dragonball and Studio Ghibli are all anime. Yes, there is definitely some anime that is rated 18, but there is plenty that isn't. My dc like an anime called Saiki K that is really funny.

Manga is the same - some is suitable for kids and some definitely isn't. Manga is comics/graphic novels and anime is animation.

Blanket banning him from cosplaying is ridiculous, especially when there are entire conventions dedicated to cosplay and having fun. Yes there's degenerate parts to it, but mostly it's pretty wholesome.
I've cosplayed about 10 times now at parties or events and it's never been connected to any sort of kink or porn.
