To say DS cannot cosplay

DS 14 wants to cosplay anime and I said no. My reason is I’ve seen it used as a kink in porn and people find it sexy. Hes very upset so AIBU?

My daughter cos played for years and had a great time. The only problem was the creepy men at Comic Con every year. They would touch up the younger girls while in costume themselves so you couldn't identify them. It was gross and eventually stopped her going.

Anime is a huge range of genres and shows. It’s not all sexual and inappropriate. I personally think Yabu!

I think people who dress up as adult babies (bleurgh) probably have adult baby fetishes.... whether such a person is also interested in cosplay (or any other normal hobby) is incidental. Cosplay is neither related to babies nor fetish. It's just a kind of roleplay - like LARP but a different theme, or if you like, a socially acceptable way to continue fancy dress past childhood. Or adults/teens enjoying the spectacle of "meeting" characters at Disneyland.

Mostly IME something that appeals to people who go to comic or gaming conventions. Occasionally other fandoms e.g. Harry Potter. Not my thing. But friends who do it seem to get great enjoyment from all the selecting a character, preparing the costume (often hand-making parts) and then going and "meeting" characters from their game worlds, interacting with others in and out of character, etc.

I think it's a bit mean to ban a teenager from doing it. It's all harmless fun. And something it's harder to find the time, budget and energy for once you're working full time/have a family etc.

Somehow I stumbled across a Harry Potter fan fic that was a story about hagrid having sex with mcgonagall. Not something personally I would find sexy but each to their own.

No-one said every anime fandom space was toxic. But there are issues with certain sections of the fandom and as a parent it would be remiss not to discuss or address those. It's not about putting your hands up and saying 'oh that's just the internet'. If we were all that lax then none of us would have parental controls. Plus cosplaying happens in RL not on the internet.

Anime isn't the only fandom with problematic elements. But it's the one that this thread is about.

You need more information. Have him show you which character he wants to cosplay. Research it on your own, if you're worried he's showing you a sanitised version (though surely you'll see the costume while he's preparing it and have many opportunities to weigh in).

It might be entirely innocent, and there's no sense in alienating him by forbidding him to do something harmless. Show him that you're reasonable so he won't be tempted to start hiding things from you, where you won't have a chance to monitor and advise.

I haven't ever actively banned any media. I kind of banned Disney in the sense I didn't buy it or put it on for them but they never asked.

I am incredibly permissive. My youngest loves anime and watched it all the time.

It really depends on what anime he wants to cosplay. I mean Pokemon is anime.

Manga is like a graphic novel (as in drawn / illustrated, not sexually graphic) or comic. I have a few manga novels and none of them are remotely pornographic.

Anime is an animated cartoon / TV programme.

They are types of media.

They can be pornographic in the same way that any drawings or animation can be used to produce pornographic content.

The way you get around that is by talking to your DC openly about these and many other things. Not by banning stuff you know nothing about.

And of course one person's 'degeneracy' is another person's loving and consensual life, which just happens to be not vanilla.

This doesn't mean anime isn't appropriate for teens- plenty of them are into it wholesomely.

Of course they'd have to be cautious of adults, just like they would anywhere they go.

@Miffee have you ever watched any anime? I have, DD2 is into it - specifically the sports anime. And honestly, there's nothing as unsexy as watching animated volleyball matches. They really aren't a gateway into anything. You seem a bit obsessed, love.

Same with Studio Ghibli's output - have you actually watched any of it? High quality storytelling, beautiful animation, absolutely suitable for children and young people.

Not all anime is the same, and to pretend it is shows a limited intellect.
