To say DS cannot cosplay

vectorismyname · 10/08/2022 15:27

DS 14 wants to cosplay anime and I said no. My reason is I’ve seen it used as a kink in porn and people find it sexy. Hes very upset so AIBU?

OP posts:
Lunalae · 10/08/2022 16:27

Maybe he could dress up as something from a real person film, although I've heard they also make real person porn as well.

All you've done is show him you're clueless, old-fashioned and out of touch. He wants to dress as a cartoon character and you've gone and called him some kind of perv? Well done, he's unlikely to want to talk about anything genuinely serious with you again.

gogohmm · 10/08/2022 16:27

Anime is just Japanese animation, it's a very wide genre. Yabu to dismiss his hobby because you don't understand it. At cosplay conventions I have never seen kink, it's mostly grown men in storm trooper outfits. Dd wears Japanese anime cosplay outfits and it's certainly not sexual

OhItsSpicyy · 10/08/2022 16:29

There are SO many things used in porn and kink. Do you stop him from doing those things as well?

mimbleandlittlemy · 10/08/2022 16:29

Skiingwithgin · 10/08/2022 15:44

I think you’re confusing anime with manga which is porn drawn in the style of anime Ie Japanese cartoon.
the two aren’t related.

but you’re within your rights to say no for whatever reason.

That's not correct. Manga is the Japanese word for comics or graphic novels and is a tradition going back to the early 1800s. There are some that are porn but the majority are not. Anime is the Japanese for animation and these go back to the early 1900s. Some are porn and majority are not. To say that manga is porn drawn in the style of anime is totally incorrect. There was recently a huge Manga exhibition at the British Museum. It was not porn.

As others have said, OP, talk to your son and see what character it is he wants to cosplay then watch the anime with him. I'm not a huge fan of anime though I do like things like Spy Family and Studio Ghibli, but it is a very popular access point to all things Japanese and this Manga/Anime is porn and therefore evil is very simplistic.

Rewis · 10/08/2022 16:33

Good luck with finding something that's not used as a kink in porn

pointythings · 10/08/2022 16:34

Bloody hell, there's some next level racism on this thread! Maybe educate yourself about anime and then talk to your son about the character he wants to cosplay?

And I've been to several conventions here in the UK - the atmosphere was altogether friendly and wholesome and not at all sexualised. Some people on this thread really need to get a grip.

FatOaf · 10/08/2022 16:36

I’ve seen it used as a kink in porn and people find it sexy

Do you ban him from wearing school uniform?

TitoMojito · 10/08/2022 16:36

Ouch OP. Cosplay is not a kink! It's something people do for fun or for attending conventions, and anime isn't evil either. Ffs...

Miffee · 10/08/2022 16:36

Needmorelego · 10/08/2022 16:24

@Miffee what on earth has the beautiful children's film My Neighbour Totoro got to do with Child 'Porn' Laws?
Nothing.... that's what.

The implication that suspicion of anime is rooted in baseless misconceptions about Japanese culture. That's what I inferred from you calling people racist.

SleepingStandingUp · 10/08/2022 16:36

Its not his fault what kind of porn you watch

I assume he also isnt allowed to wear school uniform or become a fireman?

Stravaig · 10/08/2022 16:37

Anime is the Japanese term for animation. All of it. Cosplay is dressing up. If you wear a costume for a fancy dress party, that's cosplay. Wear a sparkly evening gown and sultry make-up, you're cosplaying as beautiful, confident, sexually alluring. The traditional white wedding gown is cosplay as a virginal bride.

We need specifics, OP. Either you're dismissing an entire country, culture, genre and an everyday human activity; or, you don't understand the words you're using, and there is something genuinely worrying about the specific character or event DS is interested in.

SleeplessInEngland · 10/08/2022 16:37

I'm sure banning her interest in anime will totally quell it. 🙂

Chickychoccyegg · 10/08/2022 16:37

I think all you've done op, is show you know absolutely nothing about anime, yet still dismissed your ds Interests, which is completely rude, even if you don't like it, there is no reason your ds can't, are your dc only going to be allowed to have Interests that you like?you may as well print off the approved Interests lists for them so they don't waste time getting their own ideas.

Blimey OP I hope you never need a plumber!

StaunchMomma · 10/08/2022 16:41

Just make sure you have some input on the costume and on where he posts pics - most teenage boys would rather dress up in some batshit mask than something remotely sexy to pervs.

Give him the chance to show you what he wants to do before shutting him down, OP.

DailyDuckie · 10/08/2022 16:42

He is 14 years old, have you explained to him your concerns and have you asked him anything about what he is interested in?

Manga isn't porn, its traditionally comic books, at more recently used to refer to anime - animated manga.

The adult stuff has other names depending on the subject matter.

Hentai - shortened from hentai seiyoku is the main catch-all for adult anime / manga, but specific subsets exist according to the wikipedia page.

GoldenSongbird · 10/08/2022 16:47

OP didn't comment about anime. They mentioned some of the cosplaying and other communities around it. There are so many strawmen on this thread it's like Family of Blood.
Fwiw my teen is an anime fan. They laughed a lot when I told them about posters on here pretending it's all innocent and light.
Maybe those posters don't have teens and that's why they're unaware of the problematic fandoms, cosplaying and online communities around older anime. And yy we've been to conventions.

Pikafuckingwho · 10/08/2022 16:49

Dd who is autistic cosplays often in anime, attends hyper Japan with her friends. It’s a huge spectrum of cartoons/art/comic books games etc.

She is 17 now but when she was about 14 I accompanied her to hyper Japan and persuaded her against some of the outfits that were for sale and said maybe when she is older. She went this year and wore an ‘age appropriate’ outfit. There were some outfits I raised an eyebrow too, but I’ve also raised an eyebrow on Halloween when I’ve had sexy Snow White knock at my door accompanied with zombie nurse in white pvc dress.

wherever you look and whatever you are into there will probably be someone getting their rocks off. Somehow I stumbled across a Harry Potter fan fic that was a story about hagrid having sex with mcgonagall. Not something personally I would find sexy but each to their own.

There are problematic fandoms for any media though. The Sherlock fandom was a nightmare back in the day. It doesn't mean every anime fandom space is toxic.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 10/08/2022 16:49

At my school there was a young girl who was massively into cos play, made all her own costumes, travelled all over, very talented but quite introverted, so it was an important thing for her. She’d made friends in the community, so much so her parents trusted her to go there with them. Then suddenly she wasn’t. She used to love to show me pictures of her costumes, then wiped them all off her phone. I asked her if she’d given up. She just said, “some people there are pretty scary” and broke down. I put in a safeguarding concern. She stopped coming to school and left pretty soon pre pandemic.
On the other hand, my son has done some cos play, all light hearted stuff, and had a ball.
Some people have been overly harsh to op (quelle surprise). Maybe talk to him about it, I assume at 14 he won’t be going alone, all the usual things, keep an eye on his online contacts (there are a good many furries who are involved on the outskirts of in it and yes anywhere loads of young people go there will be weirdos), set up clear guidelines and reinforce your expectations on safety.

Weird thing to ban a kid from dress-up, but ok.
