Splitting the bill

Yes I know this gets asked often so I will keep it short.
meal came to £82. I had an issue with my main it was taken off the bill, it was like £13/14
they both had full fat cokes and I had water.

friend said we split 3 ways, I gave £20 which even for the starters and water I had was more. They still insisted I give another £5 so it’s 3 ways.
I was hesitant but did.

im not one to count pennies but when my meal was obviously more than yours why should I cover the cost of your meal too?

this friend has a habit of doing it, she eats a lot, will order several starters and cokes. When I usually just have a main and water (just my preference not being cheap)

opinion?

I hate this! I don’t drink alcohol and would only get a main so I think it’s unfair to split if others have three courses and alcohol for example
I always am upfront and say I want to pay for my own
no one’s ever been bothered and if it was the other way around, there’s no way I would let a friend or anyone else pay my share
if it’s a few pounds different or pretty equal I would split it
but otherwise you need to say up front your paying for your own only

'Full fat cokes'... just say coke?

Well full fat cokes (full sugar/original/whatever) cost more these days because of the sugar tax or whatever it's called. I'm being very vague with 'official' names because some nobber will call me out whatever option I commit to Grin

In fact the weirdos are really out in force here, now bickering about 'full fat. What is wrong with you people?

The only weirdos on this thread are those that use 'full fat' when referring to full sugar cola.

It's not specifc to coke. Full fat is a well established description of milk so it's a very mild joke to use it in less appropriate situations to designate a difference in two types of things, a lighter and heavier version. Hence many people using it for coke and me using it for alcoholic/non alcoholic beer

'Full fat' is used to describe whole milk as it has more fat in it than the other milks. Cola does not contain fat at all so it makes no sense to use that term, not even in a jokey way.

Nor does alcohol or chilli con carne, the same deliberately silly use applies.

Same as a PP using leaded/unleaded in reference to alcoholic/non-alcoholic beer.

If you has an issue with your meal so they gave it you for free, and you only drank water, surely you don’t need to pay anything and the two friends can split their bill between them or not, up to them? Am I not getting it? Confused

She says she had starters plural. No idea why she later then says she only has a main and water.

My friends used to always call me out to fancy restaurants but I was never into it because well I’m a simpleton that only likes very minimal stuff and don’t like trying new things. I also have diabetes type1 so would tend to only get water or a diet pop. Whereas they would get mocktails and cocktails etc. But I would go for the company until I realised I was the one driving and then they were constantly splitting the bill and somehow it always 2/3 times what I actually spent. I struggled to say anything until when one day I got fed up and it all kicked off because one of them responded ‘well we have to split the bill otherwise it’s too expensive for the rest of us’ what?! They actually believed the weren’t in the wrong and we’ve just become distant and I’ve made new and better friends since. From now on when appropriate I just say everyone get what they want and pay for their own stuff just keeps it fair and nobody feels annoyed etc. Splitting always gets messy the reason it exists is for them selfish people that get more stuff but want to pay less on everyone else’s expense. Just pay for your own stuff peeps don’t get greedy!

I think on that scale you’re being petty but if you do t want to feel that way you should agree in advance that you are not splitting

A full fat coke? Did it have lard in it?

Tbh OP, I think you're making a fuss over nothing.

Confused Full fat coke is pretty widely understood. Pendantic.

It’s only the ones who eat/drink the most insist on splitting evenly. Basically they expect others to substitute their gluttony.
Then guilt trip you into feeling cheap if you don’t, because they are also twats.

This is so true. Every single time!

@Delectable absolutely! And then they act like they're doing you a favour by paying for their gluttony, and are the reasonable kind ones...
(Looking at you work colleague with your 3 courses, bottle of wine and a cocktail to the rest of ours sharing platter, soft drink and burgers at tgi's 🙄)
