To be starting to really worry about Liz Truss

OK, so I'm not a Tory. I hate Boris, and despise the rest of them. I don't hold or much hope of any of them actually doing anything to address the problems that we're currently facing, because I don't think any of them actually give a toss about ordinary people. Of the two candidates that are left in the Tory leadership contest, I would pick Rishi, because I think he has a more realistic understanding of the economic challenges, but obviously, I'm not a party member so I have no say in the matter.

Nevertheless, I have been relatively sanguine and the prospect of Liz Truss as leader, a) because I figured that things couldn't get much worse than the shit show that we have had under Boris, and b) because I am pretty sure that she will be utterly unelectable when it comes to the next general election, so worst case scenario would be that we have another couple of years of crappy Tory government, exacerbated by the cost of living crisis, and then we can be pretty confident of getting shot of them. So, pretty shit all in all, but survivable.

But listening to everything that she is saying she wants to do, to the economic forecasts, and to the analysis from both within and beyond the Tory party, I'm starting to get really very worried. All this talk of huge tax cuts and massive reductions in public spending...I fear that she is going to make the looming economic crisis infinitely worse at a time when we can least afford to risk it. Nearly all economists seem to agree that her plans are going to make things worse, not better.

We are already at breaking point. Public services are on their knees. Businesses are struggling to stay afloat. People both in work and out of work are struggling. The most vulnerable are already having to choose between bare essentials such as eating and heating. Inflation continues to soar, energy prices are going off the scale, interest rates are going up... and she is about to make it worse! We just don't have the resilience in the system to cope with this.

I am actually very worried about what is going to happen. This could be very bad indeed, and a lot of people are going to suffer. If we end up with austerity on steroids in the midst of an unprecedented economic crisis, there will be massive civil unrest, surely?

I am with you on this. I predicted she’d be the next leader before Boris was even gone and felt ambivalent about it. I am now very very scared.

She is no better than Boris Johnson. The same disturbing mixture of arrogance and incompetence, the same unshakeable belief she has a god-given right to a position of power, the same casual relationship with the truth, and the same contempt for the poor and the vulnerable. Probably less of a sex-pest than the Big Dog but that's about as much of a positive spin as I can put on the situation.

She's so utterly deluded that there is a chance she will call a general election early, and Labour can inherit a whole bag of their problems, will fail to really dig the country out the hole that it is in. And a few years down the line the Tories can come back, rinse the public coffers, and bludgeon the UK completely to death.

I'm actually starting to contemplate the possibility that she might even turn out to be worse than Boris, which I never thought was possible. But she seems very gung ho about her economic strategy, while Boris wasn't really that bothered about anything other than himself and could therefore be steered by others in slightly safer direction.

starting to worry - I've been worried for a very long time. She is very limited in intelligence, has no diplomatic sensitivity and has already reversed a policy proposal after a backlash. She will be a disaster - just as Johnson has been - but she is unlikely to be telling the truth about what she intends to do.

Does it matter at this point inflation, interest rates globally are in freefall we're all going to be enduring this for a long time.

Hopefully as there isn’t long until the next general election, she’ll be booted out before she can do too much actual harm. Her chat at the moment has to appeal to the Tory party members (not just Tory party voters) and they aren’t much like the country as a whole so what appeals to them (they’d prefer to just keep BJ) won’t appeal to the country.

That was my original thinking... that she won't be around long enough to do significant damage. But now I'm not so sure and I'm concerned that she is going to do a lot of damage in a very short time.

But agree OP, could have written your post word for word.

Not seeing many alternatives other than head in the sand and save as much money as possible.

I hate paying tax. There’s much better things I could think of to do with my money than paying taxes. BUT I’d really like to think that if I were to have a heart attack that an ambulance would get to me before I died. And I really feel for those who booked a holiday to find it take 12 weeks to get a passport. And those who can’t get a driving test.

Could we please pay more tax and sort out public services? Yes there’s a chance we are just chucking money into an endless pit, but not all of it.

Liz Truss’s tax cutting plans are insane.

I agree @Mousemat25. I pay a shit load of tax and I can't say that I particularly like it, but I would willingly pay more if it meant that we could sort out public services.

She wants to have a bonfire of rights, deregulate the hell out of everything and we will be a cheap America with everything privatised, probably shitty workers rights. She also insulted our Welsh about leader already. She will be very bad for this country. Worse than Boris, I would say.

Keir Starmer needs to win the next election. This is important. We cannot have another 1992 GE. Keir Starmer must not be Neil Kinnock to Liz Truss’s John Major.

It’s not really a surprise that getting rid of Johnson would shift party away from spending

So many posted daily he should go though, I thought it a bit crazy as he loves to spend and throw around money as cash payments and the next PM likely won’t

imo spending was too high and concerning in own right, but I was for NI raise. Although even Labour were against that

Well, people should have listened when we said 'be careful what you wish for! Boris isn't perfect, but it's better to keep him than any of the alternatives.

You are a bit late to the game to only start worrying about Truss now

but....

say what??

I despair.

She’s just a female version of Boris imo. She wants Andrea Leadsom for Chancellor😭Not sure who l hate more, they’re both scary.

l really don’t understand why the Tories kicked out Boris to re elect another right wing nutter. She’s not going to win back those rural seats that switched to Lib/Dem. And she’s probably pissed off the Red Wall too.

Rishi is a twat, but l think he has a level of competence. She has nothing.
