To think the comfort you get from a dog is like no other (photo)

I'm awake (durrr) and really not well. I've been fighting an infection on and off for weeks now (other health complications).

This evening it's all got a bit much and I had a sobbing cry to my DH. DDog was so upset and desperate to get on the sofa to see that i was alright. He eventually disappeared to his sock hidyhole (I still don't know where it is) and placed one on my knee. They make him happy so why shouldn't that work for me?

Everyone has gone to bed (DH is going to deal with kids tomorrow) and I'm in agony. Sat downstairs and DOg has not left my side. Unlike his usual nighttime routine of getting into his bed, he is unmoved from the position he took up a couple of hours ago with his head on my chest and body on my arms.

I cannot tell you the comfort it gives me in the nighttime loneliness, feeling rubbish.

I know that if DH did the same I wouldn't feel half as calmed and soothed as I do with DDog (as much as I love a hug from DH!)

Here he is earlier in the evening but other than a wee and a drink has returned to this position. He is getting me through tonight with his wet nose and gentle snoring

Thank you both. I'm hopeful of a little sleep

I think I'm just feeling a bit weepy and sorry for myself and got all nostalgic about how much joy this wonderful dog has brought us

We lost our 17yr old dog last month. I miss those wee eyes gazing at me, and the feel of his soft ears. Dogs are brilliant. Hope you get some sleep and feel a bit better tomorrow x

Gorgeous photo. 😍 What a good boy looking after you and sharing his socks. That’s so sweet.

Dogs really are amazing. They’re so in tune with their humans, as the saying goes, we are their whole world. We have 2 girls and they are just everything, so loyal and loving, always ready for a cuddle.

I really hope you’re feeling better soon. 💐

Want2beme · 28/07/2022 00:25

What a great friend you've got there Smile

is it the infection causing the pain or your other health issues? I really hope your pain eases very soon.

Good night to you. Here's hoping you get some sleep tonight Flowers

leccybill · 28/07/2022 00:26

I've been ill all month (stomach bug, kidney infection and then covid!) and our little DDog has been the same, so loving and just there for me, especially at night.
My turn to give her all the affection back now as she's in season and a bit sorry for herself. Love her millions.
Hope you feel better soon.

dogcuddles · 28/07/2022 00:36

Thank you all so much. In a bit of pain that keeps me awake due to infection but my other health issues make it complicated to treat so unfortunately I've been suffering a while with it.

They are just wonderful creatures and ask for so little back for all that they give.

@leccybill I do hope you're all better now and give her a squeeze from me

I'm so sorry to read this. Our time with them is just so short. And yes to wonderful soft ears and popcorn smelling feet.

I love him!

floppybit · 28/07/2022 00:49

He's absolutely gorgeous

Whiskeypowers · 28/07/2022 00:51

Ah that’s so lovely. What a handsome devoted boy!

i have been unwell a lot recently and often find myself downstairs on the sofa so as not to wake my children. In the middle of the night there was my ten year old dog, she would origami herself into the closest spot and lie there with me. Her velvet fur, soft snuffles and the weight of her were and are so soothing.

they are purveyors of unconditional pure love.
hope you’re on the mend soon

RosalindsAFuckingNightmare · 28/07/2022 00:52

What a sweetheart and loyal friend❤I hope you feel better soon.

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 28/07/2022 00:57

He iscomforting even in the photo! Glad you are being so well looked after. M

They are amazingly loving and empathetic. Ours comforted an anti-dog friend (anti-slobber etc. -very neat and not emotional) who was just bereaved. She sat in our house and suddenly began to weep. We fussed getting tissues and tea. The dog usually stayed well away but this time sat down next to her and very gently leant on her leg-just sharing pressure and warmth. She stayed there. The friend found herself stroking soft ears and finding exactly what your dog is giving tonight.

It is miserable to be ill and suffering and sad at night.

If you need to talk to someone-don't forget the Samaritans. We don't give advice (something you usually get more of than you want) and do listen like no-one else. Samaritans are not only about suicide.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 28/07/2022 01:07

So pure precious and loyal. I'm not crying honest, something just flew in my eye. I'm thinking about the film Marley and me,now.

JockTamsonsBairns · 28/07/2022 01:09

I totally understand. I got my first ever dog 8 years ago, and I live in a permanent state of awe about how much love she brings.
She is quite literally the very love of my life.
I've got a DH and 3 DCs, but the love I have with DDog is like nothing else I've ever known.
Hope you're ok, OP ❤

perimenofertility · 28/07/2022 01:13

The love of and for a dog is so beautiful and pure! What a beautiful face he has too. And bringing you a sock for comfort - what a champion! I hope you feel better soon.

LadyLothbrook · 28/07/2022 01:24

Is that a velcro viz?? Our boy is the same. Never met a breed so eager to please and protect. He loves his 'pack' and will sit by any one of us if he senses we are sick or feeling down.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 28/07/2022 01:25

What a beautiful boy. Feel better soon 💐

LadyLothbrook · 28/07/2022 01:26

AgnestaVipers · 28/07/2022 01:30

HerRoyalNotness · 28/07/2022 01:31

So beautiful! I’ve been sorely tempted to get a dog lately. Must resist..
