To think the comfort you get from a dog is like no other (photo)

I'm awake (durrr) and really not well. I've been fighting an infection on and off for weeks now (other health complications).

This evening it's all got a bit much and I had a sobbing cry to my DH. DDog was so upset and desperate to get on the sofa to see that i was alright. He eventually disappeared to his sock hidyhole (I still don't know where it is) and placed one on my knee. They make him happy so why shouldn't that work for me?

Everyone has gone to bed (DH is going to deal with kids tomorrow) and I'm in agony. Sat downstairs and DOg has not left my side. Unlike his usual nighttime routine of getting into his bed, he is unmoved from the position he took up a couple of hours ago with his head on my chest and body on my arms.

I cannot tell you the comfort it gives me in the nighttime loneliness, feeling rubbish.

I know that if DH did the same I wouldn't feel half as calmed and soothed as I do with DDog (as much as I love a hug from DH!)

Here he is earlier in the evening but other than a wee and a drink has returned to this position. He is getting me through tonight with his wet nose and gentle snoring

“Like no other”? It’s an animal.

The love you feel for a child is like no other. Not an animal. They are not replacements for partners or children.

So sensitive… what if you can’t have children and don’t have a partner or your partner is abusive??

it is a love like no other. Not more or less but different. I love how our dog knows just what to do to make us feel better 🥰. I can’t really cry due to being on anti depressants but the 2 times I have, our dog has immediately licked all my tears away and made me cry harder because of his love but then feel better. His favourite game is “rescuing” us. One of us lies on the floor face down and he pushes us and licks our faces until we get up and he’s “saved” us.

Oh there's always one that has to spoil it isn't theree

Watchthesunrise · 28/07/2022 08:19

Dogs are the best. My daughter was crying to me about a fight she had with her friend and the dog came over and put his soft paws on her and kissed her face. 🐶

Watchthesunrise · 28/07/2022 08:20

Hope you feel better soon, OP

SaltandPeppasHere · 28/07/2022 08:20

Gorgeous. They said chocolate labs are the naughtiest of the bunch, but yours sounds just perfect. I’d be lost without my dog.

iloveeverykindofcat · 28/07/2022 08:22

You all got these lovely normal dogs and we got Lord Byron in dog form.
Hope you feel better soon OP.

MissedItByThisMuch · 28/07/2022 08:25

Here’s ours looking after me while I have Covid. He’s a rescue, abused in his former life and nervous of everything when we got him, but just so sweet and affectionate. Dogs are the best.

Your DDog is wonderful! Animals are beautiful and so loving. Here is my DCat this morning, snuggled in bed with me, she’s the black cat nobody wanted but to me she is my world ❤️

I have covid atm and my girl cat has barely left my side. DH now calls her Covid Cat. She is such a comfort. Animals have amazing empathy .

Op your boy is just adorable and I'm glad you have him.

Fuckitydoodah · 28/07/2022 08:36

I whole heartedly agree.

We got our boy nearly 2 years ago and he brings me so much happiness and contentment. I love him a ridiculous amount and I know he loves us just as much.

Point 1 Sorry to disappoint but actually we are all animals. We didn't appear in this earth in a cloud of sparkle and fairy dust. We are all part of the animal kingdom. We evolved along with cockroaches, crows and elephants.

Point 2 No body claimed a dog was a replacement so stop trying to create a straw man in your spiteful and ignorant attempt to derail the thread. Clearly you don't like dogs and want to piss on everyone else's chips. Stick to pissing on your own. And in your case I might suggest the aforementioned cockroach would be a suitable replacement for you.

OP your dog is beautiful and I hope you get better soon.

Livelovebehappy · 28/07/2022 08:38

I dog share with adult daughter. He’s just left yesterday for his other half of the week with dd, and I always feel so sad when he goes. I miss his cuddles, probably more than DH’s! Dogs are just such uncomplicated companions who love unconditionally. Hope you feel better today OP.

Strugglingtodomybest · 28/07/2022 08:43

YANBU OP, when you form a connection with a dog it's just the best!

mynamesnotMa · 28/07/2022 08:50

He is beautiful. I'm an utter dog convert. My two currently lying on top of me are my world. I adore them. Until you have a dog it's impossible to understand just how empathetic they are.

AnotherForumUser · 28/07/2022 08:53

I am loving all the dog pics and stories please keep them coming in spite of the sneery poster attempting to derail the thread.. So many wonderful pooches out there.

@bubblescoop I can only feel pity for you that you will never know the incredible love that dogs give us, and the privileged ones of us also get to feel such love for our dogs.

There is no other feeling like it in the world, although I suppose that the love we feel for our children gets the closest I can to describe it. I agree with you that dogs are not replacements for our children, but then a child cannot be a replacement for a dog either. Our dogs love us unconditionally - which can be heartbreaking when you hear of other people's dogs being neglected and treated cruelly. I even feel sad for dogs that have owners like you @bubblescoop.

I am sure that if you had a dog you would feed it the correct amount and type of food, and exercise it for the suggested length of time for it's breed. I think that you would get it it's vaccinations every year, and even have pet insurance to cover the unexpected expenses. You may even be fond of it in a type of way that anyone can feel fond of an animal, but I don't think you would be able to open up your heart to a dog to the extent that you could feel or understand how much your dog loves you, and apparently you could never feel how amazing it is to reciprocate that love. Like I said at the start, I really do feel sorry for you.

One last thing @bubblescoop humans are (just) animals too, and human beings are the only animals I know that can behave in the evil way that far too many of them do.
(Some other primates can behave very badly as well, but they would have to have cruel intent - to plan and get pleasure themselves, purely from a horrible action they do - to be considered evil). No dog ever has that evil intent.

dogcuddles · 28/07/2022 08:59

We have moved downstairs to the sofa. I've had to text DH upstairs (WFH) to come down and fetch me a drink as I can't possibly move.

He came in, rolled his eyes and called me a soppy sod. Already feeling better

The empathy and love dogs show is extraordinary.
When DD was very poorly with a mental health crisis, one of the dogs knew exactly when she was feeling bad and went to sit in her feet wherever she was.

Hopeyou feel better soon OP, but keep chatting here. There is always someone about ready to talk about dogs

Also, the fact that the dog has a SECRET sock hoard is just brilliant

Friendofdennis · 28/07/2022 09:03

I agree with you wholeheartedly My lovely dog who died last year was my sole comfort when I was bereaved He would come and sit with me and let me cry over him as I stroked him. He was my companion and dear friend when I was in deep mourning.

Hobele · 28/07/2022 09:04

Nah, sorry but can't agree. After losing our dog 2 years ago, we took on a puppy this year. I've found her much harder work than all the cats I have. (And I'm a breeder and currently have many of those.)

TheLadyofShalott1 · 28/07/2022 09:07

Oops, sorry @dogcuddles for apparently ignoring you in my response to bubblescoop. I wasn't really ignoring you, I was just (probably pointlessly) trying to show her that I think she is totally wrong in her attitude - with good reasons for me thinking that - to you and the rest of us on here. Of course she was purposely being 'goady', and I should probably have just ignored her.

Thank you for this thread OP, and for the gorgeous photo of your wonderful dog, and thank you to all the others who have posted photos of their beautiful dogs. I really hope that you are feeling much better soon 🐶🐕🧦💐xx

dogcuddles · 28/07/2022 09:11

@MissedItByThisMuch please get better soon. I've so far avoided the dreaded covid but know how nasty it can be!
