To not want to stay in a 3 star hotel

Am I being really snobby, anybody stayed in a 3 star hotel? Looking for holidays for the summer and not used to the summer holiday prices as my daughter is now in year 1, DH says I’m being ridiculous and should just appreciate a holiday.

The star rating isn't as obvious as it seems. It often is about hotel facilities rather than the quality of the room or the service. There are 3 star hotels that will absolutely be a wonderful stay.

So yup - you're a snob.

luxxlisbon · 24/07/2022 21:37

I don’t think it’s ridiculous. If I’m spending hard earned money to go on holiday I never want to stay in some grotty hotel with no amenities that is basically paying money to stay somewhere much worse than my own nice home.

Skoolsout · 24/07/2022 21:39

Fair enough if you can afford and want to spend more.

Cheekycheeky12 · 24/07/2022 21:39

are 3 stars usually nice?

ResentfulLemon · 24/07/2022 21:40

As PurpleMarie said the star rating isn't an indication of quality, but an indication of facilities available.

I'd rather stay in a clean 3 with a great reputation than a grotty 5 that is a Trip Advisor black hole for reviews.

I live near there. It’s an utter shithole.

Not at all, book what you want!

For me it's about the pool and kids facilities, at the end of the day the room is just for sleeping. I like a big pool with slides but some 5 star hotels only have a plain pool. Different strokes for different folks I suppose

What a fucking coincidence - it seems almost ... unbelievable.

WhoIBU · 24/07/2022 21:43

I'd ignore the stars and check reviews on TripAdvisor.

I'm a total holiday/hotel snob but stars are a total red herring.

Plenty of 3* hotels are clean, friendly staff, great location etc. All matter much more to me than butler service etc etc.

3 star hotels are not 'grotty'. Don't be ridiculous

ODFOD..... get used to school term pricing! And yes, you're snobby, horribly so.

PurpleMarie · 24/07/2022 21:46

@IShouldBeSoLurky How about this one, live near this one? When I stayed there, it was exceptional and the location couldn't be beat.

Sure you do 🙄

Shareornotwhocares · 24/07/2022 21:47

You see - someone said the Clarendon is a shit hole.

inspent six months staying there mom-fri working in greenwich

rooms we’re clean, showers worked and food was ok if I couldn’t be arsed going out.

would I want to stay there on holiday, no

PurpleMarie · 24/07/2022 21:48

Ok, I'm done being a bitch.

Stay where you want, but don't be swayed by star ratings, it's an outdated system that particularly chains game the system to increase their ratings.

I've had amazing stays in 2 stars, 3 stars, and 5 star hotels. Check out the reviews and know what's important to you - luxurious rooms, fancy facilities, location, etc. and choose based on that.

Mushroo · 24/07/2022 21:49

It depends - I normally aim for 4 star up but I’ve stayed in some 3 stars that have great reviews and they’ve been lovely! So I think it’s a case by case thing

Sugarsandwiches · 24/07/2022 21:49

Depends where you’re going. We stayed in a fab boutique 2* on a tiny Greek island and it was glorious. I think in some smaller places they can’t be arsed with everything that goes into getting more stars but check reviews. This hotel was on par with the 5 star we stayed in last year which was part of a bigger chain.

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 24/07/2022 21:52

Star ratings are dependent on facilities available. It's not based on grandeur.

Google it.

Don't be a snob.

Lochroy · 24/07/2022 21:52

Agree with pp that rating depends on service & facilities and you don't always need lots of those in order for a hotel to be "nice".

As long as you know what you are in for, then in could be perfectly fine.

The most important thing to me would be that it's clean and comfortable.

IShouldBeSoLurky · 24/07/2022 21:53

entropynow · 24/07/2022 21:47

Sure you do 🙄

Not sure why this is implausible 🤣 I live literally 10 minutes walk away. Visiting friends have stayed there and it’s grim. As far as I can tell it survives purely on London Marathon trade. But hey, you troll hunt away.

Youdoyoutoday · 24/07/2022 21:54

The clarendon in Blackheath is not a shit hole!! Spent many a night, occasion (weddings, evening do's) etc.
I wouldn't want to spend a week's holiday there because it's not a 'destination' hotel for me but its a well run establishment
