To not want to stay in a 3 star hotel

Cheekycheeky12 · 24/07/2022 21:33

Am I being really snobby, anybody stayed in a 3 star hotel? Looking for holidays for the summer and not used to the summer holiday prices as my daughter is now in year 1, DH says I’m being ridiculous and should just appreciate a holiday.

OP posts:
HandbagsnGladrags · 24/07/2022 21:55

No way. I've been lucky enough to do 5 star a few times and I'm used to that standard now. 3 star would be a no from me.

MichaelAndEagle · 24/07/2022 21:55

Imo you pay for a lot of stuff you don't use in a 5* like a gym. (Well I'm not going to use a gym!!)

I echo what others said, and look for the facilities you want. A 3* will be clean etc, i wouldn't think it would be grotty.

Thatswhyimacat · 24/07/2022 21:56

Aren't stars 4 and 5 basically for if you have a gym and a restaurant in the hotel? Or something like that.

scissorsandsellotape · 24/07/2022 21:56

luxxlisbon · 24/07/2022 21:37

I don’t think it’s ridiculous. If I’m spending hard earned money to go on holiday I never want to stay in some grotty hotel with no amenities that is basically paying money to stay somewhere much worse than my own nice home.

This right here
It's why I won't camp tbh

fizznchips · 24/07/2022 21:58

I usually go for 4* if possible, one year we stayed at the cortijo blanco on the Costa del sol and it was lovely, just do your research

rookiemere · 24/07/2022 21:58

I'd go on the reviews rather than the number of stars.

I stayed at a 2 star at Lytham St Annes recently for a concert (St Ives Hotel) and it was really nice. We paid for a superior room which I think makes all the difference , as you generally won't then get put in their worst rooms.

Coffeaddict · 24/07/2022 21:58

I've stayed in a few premier inns and I'm pretty sure most of them are 3 star. Always clean and comfortable.
I consider a hotel somewhere to kip and more interested in exploring the place I'm in then chilling in a hotel

AmbushedByCake1 · 24/07/2022 21:59

What a weird goady thread. Has anyone ever stayed in a three star hotel?! The horror. What faux naïveté.

If you're going to be a snob at least be a well informed snob. As others have said, star rating is based on amenities. Not now posh something is.

exLtEveDallas · 24/07/2022 22:00

Are you talking about UK or abroad?
I’d stay in a UK 3 star, and some European countries, but not other overseas destinations.

RishiRich · 24/07/2022 22:02

It depends on the hotel. Some 3 stars are lovely but have fewer facilities, e.g. no swimming pool or gym. Others might have the facilities but are grotty.

Skoolsout · 24/07/2022 22:05

Is that true about the facilities and star rating? Two weeks ago I stayed in a beautiful 5 star hotel in the UK called Lainston House and there was no pooL or spa etc? Another beautiful holt near where I live called Gravetye Manor is the same.

ShirleyPhallus · 24/07/2022 22:05

I’ll only stay places that are nicer than my home so would never choose a 3 star place for a holiday unless it had great facilities like a creche

It isn’t snobby, it’s up to everyone to spend their money exactly as they like

some of the links up thread show really sad hotel rooms with obviously unwashed runners on the beds and unloved dated decor. Not for me thanks.

MichaelAndEagle · 24/07/2022 22:06

Look at the reviews as well, that will give you a good idea.

di2004 · 24/07/2022 22:07

you’ve got standards and there’s nothing wrong with that at all - I’m the same. Can you put a bit more money in the pot to get abetter quality hotel ie; food, bedrooms and facilities? Check Trip Advisor as you will get help on there to make your decision.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 24/07/2022 22:07

IShouldBeSoLurky · 24/07/2022 21:41

I live near there. It’s an utter shithole.

Why would you go and stay in a hotel if you already live by it?

What if it was that or no holiday at all though?
You can use a basic 3 star as a good base to explore a new place, go to beaches every day, eat in local restaurants etc.
Fair enough you don't choose to go to 3 stars. But what if that's the best you can afford?

CrystalCoco · 24/07/2022 22:09

I'd really check out reviews on TripAdvisor, my basic rule is that I don't want to stay somewhere on holiday that isn't as nice as my house (which is very nice!) why would you?
you usually get what you pay for and I'd rather stay at home than compromise

cansu · 24/07/2022 22:11

It depends. Sometimes you pay for lots of extras that may not be useful anyway. I would check out the hotel on trip advisor etc before I decide. Where are you hoping to go?

HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd · 24/07/2022 22:13

anybody stayed in a 3 star hotel?

No. None of us. Ever. Nobody stays at three star hotels. They’re just money laundering fronts. 🙄

Abouttimemum · 24/07/2022 22:13

It really all depends on the individual hotel and your own preferences. For me so long as the reviews tell my it’s a clean and comfortable room then I’m happy.
If I want a spa stay and good food i’d probably go 4*
It’s snobby to say all 3*s are shit, yes.

Chakraleaf · 24/07/2022 22:15

I always stay in 2 or 3 star. Its always fine.

OhGoodnessItsSoExhausting · 24/07/2022 22:16

We go away in mid August every year. Family of 4. Always try to spend under £1500 for the whole holiday including flights. Usually stay 3 stars. Have found some great trips! A few years ago went here in the Algarve, it was gorgeous and at the time we spent around £1000 for the whole holiday, might be a bit more now, but still cheap I'm sure: www.loveholidays.com/holidays/?destinationIds=917&nights=7&rooms=2-10-8#hotelUrl=%2Fholidays%2Fportugal%2Falgarve%2Fporches%2Fquinta-das-figueirinhas.html

But there are loads of lovely 3 star holiday places. Don't be a snob OP!!

Abouttimemum · 24/07/2022 22:16

Also we just came back from a 3* stay in Majorca because the reviews said the kids entertainment was brilliant. And it was brilliant.
It really does depend on your wants and needs.

I completely agree. Let me tell you about the time that the outdated painting in my room ruined my vacation. I just spent the whole two weeks in Tuscany feeling sad.

I do actually agree that you should be able to spend your money on whatever the fuck that you want, but calling those links 'sad' is a little much.
