To not want to stay in a 3 star hotel

Am I being really snobby, anybody stayed in a 3 star hotel? Looking for holidays for the summer and not used to the summer holiday prices as my daughter is now in year 1, DH says I’m being ridiculous and should just appreciate a holiday.

OP posts:
maddiemookins16mum · 24/07/2022 22:35

Tripadvisor is your friend here. I wouldn’t stay in a 3 star unless it had 4 plus reviews on Tripadvisor. Oh and I would stay in a 3 star in Cyprus compared to a 3 star in Greece.

BellePeppa · 24/07/2022 22:36

I’ve been to lots of hotels over the years 3, 4 and 5 and my favourites were usually 4. If I were going to book a hotel for a holiday that’s the star I’d go for.

ArnoldBee · 24/07/2022 22:37

After watching The Hotel Insoector I don't need a hair dryer and ironing board in my room when I'm in the canaries. I also don't mind self serve on beer and soft drinks. You need to look at what facilities you want not the star rating.

Not sure what happened to the text, missing star symbols but added bold??

are 3 stars usually nice?

Yes of course.
The star system relates to facilities. A 5 star has that grading because 24 hour room service is offered. I watched a documentary recently on hotels and cleanliness. Many of the larger higher starred ones scored very poorly for cleaning. The smaller, lowered starred ( because they have fewer facilities) are often independently owned and were far,far cleaner. Look at each hotel as an individual thing. What do the rooms look like, are there lots of photos. What are the reviews like. Look at the average score reviews. They will tell you all you need to know.

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 24/07/2022 22:43

It would depend on what country I'm in.
A 3 star European hotel is a very different hotel to a 3 star African hotel

ShirleyPhallus · 24/07/2022 22:34

Then you go ahead and book them and I’ll continue with my way which suits me just fine!

But isn't the point really whether the OP should consider a 3 star, rather than if you or I would stay in one?

HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd · 24/07/2022 22:13

anybody stayed in a 3 star hotel?

No. None of us. Ever. Nobody stays at three star hotels. They’re just money laundering fronts. 🙄

😂

I've stayed in plenty of 3 star hotels that have been absolutely fine.

whynotwhatknot · 24/07/2022 22:51

Course we have but theyre different in every c9untry-one places standards and hygiene arent as great as another

check tripadvosor for reviews and do some research

zoeFromCity · 24/07/2022 22:53

Depends on where the hotel is. If Egypt/Tunis, somewhere exotic, I'd not do 3 stars unless insanely good references.
Somewhere in EU with good hygienic standards being total norm, 3 stars are totally ok for many kinds of holiday.

Covidbee · 24/07/2022 22:58

Used to work in a 4 hotel. By the outdated star rating rules rhe only reason it wasn't a 5 was due to no lift/elevator.

Couldn't have one built due to it being a historic building.

Still, if you ask me, lift or no lift, wasn't worth 3 let alone 5.

All about the extras/location ect. Can get amazing 2* still.

QueSyrahSyrah · 24/07/2022 23:01

It depends entirely on the hotel. We stayed in a small 3 star in Majorca last year that was lovely, rooms a bit tired but very clean, public areas brand new and food / service great, meanwhile we've just stayed in a 4* in Rome that has great reviews but was distinctly mediocre in every sense.

So yes it's a bit snobby (and foolish) to base your decision entirely on the star rating, and sweepingly rule out anything below 4*

darlingdodo · 24/07/2022 23:06

Star ratings are more about the facilities than the quality of the hotel. Used to get marked down for no phone in room, reception not 24 hours, no porter to take your bags to your room, no shower cap (not kidding.....) or shoe shine kit. Most of it is really unimportant.

Quia · 24/07/2022 23:09

It depends what you want from the hotel. For us, the hotel we stay in when we go on holiday is just a base. So long as it's clean and comfortable, has wifi and does a decent breakfast, that's all we need, and a three star is usually fine. If you want luxury spas, whizzy coffee-makers in the room, a swimming pool etc, presumably you need more.

noirchatsdeux · 24/07/2022 23:11

I'm in the industry and travel a lot for work. I've stayed in every star classification going. I've stayed in terrible 7 stars and wonderful 3 stars. The star system doesn't mean much, to be honest. I prefer to look at the reviews on a number of review sites, and not only the ones in English. Demographs play a big part, too...an older traveller is going to be less willing to put up with some 'poor' aspects of their holiday than an 18 year old would be.

Lots and lots of research before booking, that's what I always advise.

HappyBinosaur · 24/07/2022 23:12

We stayed here a few years ago and it’s 3 star. We normally stay in a 4 star (and very occasionally 5 star!!) but this was absolutely fine and the facilities were great.
Food was repetitive and everything was basic but it was a good price and clean.

It’s not “snobby” to want nice things, including experiences.

I wouldn’t choose stay in a hotel that was less nice than my own home, so I rarely stay in anything that isn’t 5 star.

As a minimum I want king size beds, great views, rain showers, an enormous bath, a decent mini bar, somewhere to sit, loads of hangers and all spotlessly clean.

HappyBinosaur · 24/07/2022 23:13

We tend to look for the best deal we can afford and am not snobby about the rating. I do look at reviews but they are usually mixed even at the much better hotels.

QueSyrahSyrah · 24/07/2022 23:16

To answer a PP, star rating depends on services offered as much as quality or facilities.

I don't have the exact requirements but as an example it may be that to have a 4th star you need 24 hour reception and offer room service, and for a 5th star you need a concierge and same day laundry service.

Having those things doesn't guarantee you the rating as it's based on lots of things, but without you have no chance.

That's why you can find beautiful luxury 3* hotels with amazing facilities but limited services, and scabby 5 star ones with all the gear but no idea.

Skoolsout · 24/07/2022 23:22

Thank you for explaining that.

PurpleFlower1983 · 24/07/2022 23:27

It really depends! Not all 3 star hotels are created equal!

Pinksparkleypanties · 24/07/2022 23:28

I’d rather go 5 star every year and 3 star each year .

id never stay 3 star. I’m not wealthy ! I just would just rather save harder for another year and go 4 or 5 star !

premier inn 3 not a problem. Big resort 3 not a chance. However, there are lots of really wonderful 3 hotels, often boutique family run hotels and many of them are real gems so totally depends what you’re looking for. We also stayed in a 3 in Bangkok, an Ibis and it was absolutely outstanding
