The cost of cheese!

The cost of cheese just keeps going up. In aldi the grated cheese I got used to be £1.50. Then it went upto £1.75 and now its £1.99. In asda they did a 2 for £3 offer on cheese, earlier in the year it went to 2 for £3.50 and now its 2 for £4. How much will it be by Christmas.

Asda is mad! 400g has gone from £2.00 to £2.85 in recent weeks - that's more than 9.4%!

I know it's not actually cheese, but we like those plastic cheese singles on burgers and I went to pick up some today and they've gone to £1.20, from about 60/70p. That was just Asda's own, not Dairylea. I really baulked at paying that for something that's not even proper cheese.

As for proper cheese, I'm buying mainly the very lowest brand of Red Leicester now. Same for Cheddar. Haven't bought nice cheese like brie or anything for months.

I just buy the cheapest cheddar stuff, value or whatever its called. Perfectly nice cheese.

We're having a cheeseboard at the weekend and am getting ready for the cost. We are near Booths and also have a local award winning cheese shop.
Still, cheaper than eating out.

Farmers are being absolutely caned for the price of feed, fertiliser, antibiotics, electricity to run milking parlours - the lot. Their costs have shot up like everyone else’s; and it’s only very recently (within the last couple of months) that supermarkets have started paying their suppliers more so they have a fighting chance of surviving. It sucks - but farmers and producers are facing a cost of living crisis too. (As to whether supermarkets would be prepared to absorb some of those costs and see their profits reduced - that’s a whole other thread…)

The cheese market seems to have gone berserk if what i buy is any indicator.
Recently I was repeat buying a very nice French mildish cheese on special offer at Ocado at £5.00 for three 200 gram packs (great value). The offer was on for several months.
Suddenly the offer has gone, which is ok but the cheese is £4.00 per pack.
It looks as if cheese is following what's happening with butter. Logical, I suppose.

Cos grating hurts my arms and hands and I can't always stand long enough to do it. Cos OP wants to, for whatever reason that is her own business.

(And if you say "but I wasn't talking about disabled people" that's part of the problem. We're an afterthought.)

But with grated cheese you are paying for it to be grated, which takes two minutes (and fresh grated is nicer). I use grated for convenience when I'm cooking, but the minute the price becomes an issue I'll go back to grating my own.

And by the way I get it about the arm aching but I grate cheese sitting down, there's no rule to say you've got to stand up to grate cheese!

I've definitely noticed that Asda grated cheese has gone up, glad it's not just me! I like the grated four cheese bags and they've jumped massively in price in recent months.

As well as being much more expensive, pre-grated cheese usually has potato starch added to stop it sticking together, yuck. I have a disability with one of my arms so I use my food processor to grate stuff.

I agree, prices are going up. I used to eat a lot of cheddar but I'm trying to vary it more now. Cottage cheese is cheaper and I like that.

It’s a luxury item. You’re paying for convenience and ultimately, you can live without grated cheese if you can’t afford it.
